One of the most common problems faced by automobile owners is the car battery losing its charge well before its expected life. Let’s face it! We don’t give battery the due diligence. We come to know about it when the car doesn’t start, forcing us to spend on a new battery, to get the car back to normal. Stay Safe

When doing routine maintenance on your battery it is advisable to take precautions to prevent harm.
a) Do not smoke near the battery – the gas it contains is flammable
b) Do not place metallic objects on the battery – it might cause it to short
c) Take care not to get the battery acid on yourself – in an unfortunate event, immediately use water to flush it away. Do not use your hands
d) Keep the children away from the battery

1.Regularly Clean the Cables
Your battery terminals build gunk over time. That’s a corrosion build up and the nasty stuff has got to be regularly cleaned off to keep your battery happy. Make a simple cleaning solution by mixing a tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water and then use a non-metallic brush to clean the top of the battery and any corrosion on the terminal’s top. Disconnect the cables and thoroughly clean the corrosion from them too. If they are stuck, do not try to pull them – try to twist them free or use a cable puller.

2. Electrolyte Levels
The battery water level drops faster in this part of the world because of the high heat. Make sure you check the water levels at least once a week and refill if the level has dropped. With that said, new batteries do not need that quick attention. Never over fill the cells and only use clean distilled water for topping off the water levels. When you take off the covers of the battery cells, look for a mark on the sides; that’s the top off point – do not go over that. While you are doing this, it would be wise to check the battery casing for any cracks that might have developed. If you find cracks, change the battery.

3. Off-season Care
People who own multiple cars face this issue. It happens as batteries lose charge if they sit idle for too long. So, what should you do? Ideally a battery should be charged every 6 months to keep it healthy – you can either drive the car or have someone else take it out for a spin every once in a while. Another solution is to buy a Battery Maintainer; it is designed to be left ON for the entire time you don’t use your car. It keeps measuring the battery charge and automatically adjusts it to avoid shortening the battery lifespan.
These are some very basic tips for taking care of your battery. Battery failure happens to the best of us because of our negligence. However, if you follow the car battery maintenance tips given above, you won’t have to fear of a battery suddenly dying on you. Keep in mind that a battery’s expected life is 60-84 months depending on its model and that is not preventable.
