Perfectly understand the travails of the mum, as the care for a sickle cell disease child isn't isnt a joke. From the foregoing, it's not out of place to take it that the child is indeed SS and suffered an acute sequestration crisis while playing at school. There prolly was a mix up (deliberate or not) in the previous test done with her spouse. She has to quickly exit the denial stage of grief which she is in right now and accept the reality.
Yes there is a cure for sickle cell disease, (stem cell transplant) however it's not gained wide acceptance in Nigeria and is limited by the high cost of the procedure. A few of our teaching Hospitals offer this treatment (UBTH-Benin, UCH -Ibadan, LUTH -Lagos.) the much I know.However she would have to discuss with the doctors at the primary care hospital on the basics of management for her kid.
On to the last issue - Nothing stops her from having further kids and it doesn't mean they would all turn out to be SS, the apparent chance that she has further SS kids is 1:4(one ratio four pregnancies) for each pregnancy. Interestingly, she could determine early on in the pregnancy, as early as the 5th week if the child has SS or not and it could be treated in the womb (in -utero) or otherwise. These advancements are offered in one or two of our health centres (especially private whose names I can't mention). Essentially, it's not the end of the world.

This is why going for second test is always a good idea. I am AS, I ensured my wife did the test even though she had done it before we met.

The only thing you can do is follow the doctor's advise and always try to get a second opinion.

Recently we discovered my sister is SC which hurts but nothing anyone can do. Order than pray and advise her to use meds as prescribed.

I thought you must have known his genotype right from birth. And being SS isnt the end of the world. Just give him the regular medications as prescribed by a doctor specialized in that field and he will be just fine. Dont make him feel like one too and i strongly doubt if your other kids will be SS. This is very pathetic. In 2016? I'm kinda angry cos someone lied if truly the child is SS. Yes the situation is a very serious one but I wanna say we are not God...the child could find mercy through prayers.

The disease has killed many but the truth is people live with it too. I said live with it cos not everyone with the disease would get cured miraculously. I heard of a man who is 66 and he's still going strong. I know of people in their 30s and 40s doing well with it.

As someone said, all the child need is love at this tender age...and as he grows, educate him on how to manage himself and not engage in everything his mate does.

Please go and do a rerun test in order to ascertain both your status and prevent future occurrence. I pray God cures the Child cos he's innocent.

don't worry It may sound ackward but what u need is d help of a good doctor. u need to find out if there is away to know if the child u are pregnant with has SS before it matures fully. with DAT u can be able to abort the one that has SS. this is just my opinion as some people are against abortion. no bashing please.

If you still have your husband's result you can sue that hospital for medical malpractices and the consequent implications that error is bringing your way. I will advise you take the Child for healing and deliverance services with Dr. Paul Enenche @ Dunamis Church, Area 1 or connect even online streaming for the service. Change of genotype is a minor business there.

Its a horrible experience to see ur innocent child in sickle cell crisis, that of ur child likely to be sequestration crisis. U have the options of investigating ur husband and the lab for criminal conspiracy. U can actually have normal healthy children (25% chance) and healthy carriers (50% chance). For the cure, Sickle cell is curable by bone marrow transplant, but its quite expensive (about 5 million Naira). Also make sure the child drink water all the time and take penicillin and malaria drugs, at least once a week to reduce the rate of the crisis. My colleage (Senior Medical Doctor) is approaching 50 yrs with the disease but still kicking strong. Also, remember God is the ultimate. Always pray and ask for his intervention.

This is what i have to say:

Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) is not the End of Life. Just Brace yourself. There is Nothing you can do about it now.

Your Child is going to have lots of Crisis (It's the Term used for Sickle Cell Patients when they go through Deep Pains).
You will have lots of Sleepless Nights, But if your child is Strong enough, he will Scale through (I mean Grow Old and Achieve things). Many People are living with the Disorder up till 60 and above.

Not trying to scare you, but your baby might have lots of breakdowns, you have to be strong for your baby. Never Despair.

You need your baby to stay healthy and strong?? Then:-

* Avoid Malaria attacks,
* Colds,
* Infections,
* Try to boost your Baby's Immune system, lots of organic Fruits.
* Also give your baby normal dose of Folic Acid. (Your doctor will advice you better)
* Your baby has to eat well, and Stay off Germs.

Please, you really need to see a good Doctor.

There is a Drug out there, it helps the people living with this disorder (i cant disclose the name, before it gets abused. See your Specialized Doctor)

Also, Bone Marrow Transplant is Available. It Treats and Cures this. Do some Research on it. Mind you, it is Not readily available, and It is EXPENSIVE (From the Name, you can deduce its form of treatment).


Register with a Sickle Cell foundation (Go to Luth), the earlier, the better. so you'd have Clear and Vast knowledge of SCD.

You and your husband have to be strong. Stand up and Face it.

It is possible to have babies without the SCD, but the probability is not high.


Lastly, I am very Spiritual, and i know GOD can Cure Every Ailment/Disorder. So if you also have Faith, you can start Rigorous Prayers.

i concur

dominique, please go for another test for confirmation in a government hospital. most of the so called private health institutions (hospitals, labs etc) are profit making ventures and are not really very reliable.

after the test, you will know what next to do.
i used to be very ill when young but am not ss, so it may be a mistake on the part of the lab technicians.

but if its confirmed, then talk to your doctors and know how best to manage it, there are many ss that managed theirs well and you can hardly know. just be ready to stand strong.
