May be in the literatures. But no documented evidence yet of any patient successful cured of Hbss with minimum of a year follow up.

Remember this is genetic problem and until there is more than 5-10year review we can't talk of cure yet.

Mr. Mental case. Did you read her story at all They went for tests before marriage. He's AA, she's AS. That's why they got married.

After the son's illness, they went again and it changed to AS. Blame the hospital, not the couple.

They did it just once. Just once! And you can't tell if it was done in a credible hospital. I've known my genotype and blood group since I was 15 and I keep repeating the test every year. . just in case. They have themselves to blame!

From the little i know. One of your first four offsprings will be SS. It just wasn't dictated which of them. Since your first born is SS, be rest assured the kids that come after will be safe from this hedious and energy consuming genotype. My brother is of the genotype SC, a very rare one. He's got his problems but with the right medication and care, he's good to go. Same with your kid. God help us.

dominique, please go for another test for confirmation in a government hospital. most of the so called private health institutions (hospitals, labs etc) are profit making ventures and are not really very reliable.

after the test, you will know what next to do.
i used to be very ill when young but am not ss, so it may be a mistake on the part of the lab technicians.

but if its confirmed, then talk to your doctors and know how best to manage it, there are many ss that managed theirs well and you can hardly know. just be ready to stand strong.

Don't ever compare SC and SS.... SS is worse... SC is more manageable and better and less crisis.... the only problem with SC is it affects the joints in the body especially the legs. but SS involves fainting, full body pain, joint pains all over the body, some SS can't stand for long or walk long distances.

Dominique, I sympathise with you. But, just know that sickle cell anemia is not a death sentence. I consciously married my wife at a time I knew she had the SS genotype. That was about 20 years ago. I ditched a medical doctor for her, who predicted that hospital would be our 2nd home. Marrying my wife was one of the best decisions I have made. We have 3 children and we have managed them well. You, too, Dominique, can, even better than us. But, fist things first:
1. Try to learn a lot on the subject, including care and 'Donts'
2. Avoid sensational and senseless suggestion from uninformed, illiterate and mis-informed quacks and charlatans
3. Avoid any spiritual treatment. None of them work: whether it is from mosque, church or traditional shrine
4. There is treatment in Austria and US for SS. Your son would fully revert to AA status. But the treatment is very, very expensive. Before the recent Naira devaluation, it costs about N35 mln
5. The good news is that the University of Benin Teaching Hospital has successfully carried out this reversal in Nigeria. It costs a fraction of the foreign cost: about N12mln. You should enquire
6. Finally, get an experienced and competent haematologist. Your child would leave the valued and living life God has destined for him

Before dating any girl the first i ask for is blood type. One of you lied to the church. The risk of bringing another ss into the world is too much. Stop having children. The church do not want you to become prayer point for them that is why they demanded for the test. . I'm not comparing them. I just made reference to it. That's the exact ailments my bro goes through. Sometimes i think he's feigning but after lots of research, i discovered it's normal per his predicament. I'll take it an admonition to take several tests before any engagement with my spouse when i start to court. Thanks though!

It is NOT one in four offspring.
Kindly get informed.

If two AS parents get married, for every child they give birth to, there is a 25% chance the child will be SS. Another 25% chance that the child will be AA and 50% chance that the child will be AS.
Ergo two AS parents can have all their kids AA (if they are lucky), all AS (not so bad) or in the worse case all SS (may God forbid this) or any. possible combination.

OP, please seek the advice of a medical doctor preferably in a teaching hospital.
Help baby get over this crisis.
Get a rerun done on you, baby and hubby's genotype when everything calms and baby becomes stable.
Talk to your doctor about hydroxyurea (Increases fetal haemoglobin) and ciklavit (reverses already sickled rbc's).
Read up extensively (people perish for lack of knowledge) The internet is your friend in this regard.
Join a support group if you can find one or start one. You can also be a source of strength for someone else.
Finally and most importantly...Pray!
