Qualified Nurse Or Auxiliary Nurse (difference) by brighthp(m): 8:44pm On Feb 07, 2016 |
Good evening everyone, Please I have this question disturbing my mind since 3 days now and I want matured answers from matured nairalanders The question is that; What are the differences between a qualified nurse that studied nursing up to the university or college level and an auxiliary nurse since their work are the same in the hospitals or health centres? |
Re: Qualified Nurse Or Auxiliary Nurse (difference) by Lexusgs430: 12:22am On Feb 08, 2016 |
brighthp: They are not the same. A qualified nurse, has the name implies is qualified (went to university and bagged a Bsc) An Auxiliary nurse is simply a patient attendant(might get the odd sandwich qualification or varying trainings, but not medically trained)!!! |
Re: Qualified Nurse Or Auxiliary Nurse (difference) by brighthp(m): 1:10pm On Feb 08, 2016 |
Lexusgs430: Yes I know but the question their is that why will they allow them work together as same in some hospitals or medical centres? |

brighthp: Auxiliaries do not give medication, do not give Injections, don't do complex dressings, do not relate to Doctors on behalf of the patients etc etc etc They seem to work together, has the name implies, they are assistants!!!! 6 Likes |

Auxiliary Nurse otherwise called a Nurse Assistant or Nurse Aid or Ward Aid is a person that ASSISTS a Certified Nurse in doing his or her duties. They assist in carrying out caring procedures that you do not need to have medical knowledge to do hence there is NO fixed training or syllabus or a minimum level of education. They train on the job to follow orders from a Registered /Qualified Nurse or a Doctor. They are not trained to make a medical diagnosis or commence treatment. One analogy is to compare Man O War with a Soldier. Both wear uniforms but war pass war!! A certified or registered Nurse will need to attend a national regulations' specified period of Training in a recognized School of Nursing or University, as its common nowadays, then pass a standardized exam by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria before he/she can practice. Moreover, a Nurse is expected to make some diagnosis and commence treatment before the arrival of a doctor. Experience by an Auxiliary does not equate to a Certified Nurse. It is unfortunate that in Nigeria, most people put on the uniform and parade themselves as Nurses and are even encouraged by some health care providers to lie to us because they are cheaper to employ and sack!! Most Ward Aid in standard hospitals do not wear white uniform. You see them fully decked up even with caps in private hospitals. 4 Likes |

A qualified nurse / RN has a bachelors (could be a specialist or a generalist). They are able to carry out a lot of nursing intervention like inserting IV. An axillary nurse needs to be supervised by a RN because they are not as qualified as an RN thus cannot so all nursing intervention for example inserting an IV tube. |

There is no such thing as auxillary nurse. In developed countries, the nursing board provides programs and licensure for those who are not able to practice as a nurse but can assist the nurse in giving care to patients, they are called CNAs; certified nurse assistants. What we have here in Nigeria are quack nurses because they received no formal training and are not licensed to do what they do. The regulatory body here doesn't not have provision for them to train as nurse assistants. Besides, the cap does not make the nurse, but the scientific rationale behind every care she gives. For your safety, ask questions. 4 Likes |

JustHere2Observ: Sorry to disappoint you; there is a term called Auxiliary Nurse. A term used in the UK and other Commonwealth countries while CNAS is an US derived terminology. Countries have all the rights to determine what they want or legalize. Unless we want to fool ourselves Auxiliaries exist in Nigeria and have come to stay HOWEVER what the Nursing and Midwifery Council needs to do is to look for ways to streamline and regularize the profession. Because of lack of regularization things have gone haywire!. South Africa has found a way to regularize it. Many things also exist in the US that don't exist in Nigeria e. g Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. Each country must decide what works or otherwise for them. See a description in any UK site or just Google it. 3 Likes |

What is an Auxiliary Nurse? Did you know - Both men and women can become Auxiliary Nurses? Did you know - Nurses are in demand! Auxiliary Nurses carry out basic nursing procedures and take care of patients on a less specialized level under the supervision of a registered nurse. An Auxiliary Nurse must be registered with the South African Nursing Council. What does an Auxiliary Nurse do? takes care of the ill and weak assists nurses and doctors makes sure patients are comfortable feeds patients makes beds takes temperatures, pulses, blood pressure and weigh patients puts patients at ease helps with putting on new bandages etc works in hospitals, clinics, health care centres and old aged homes works as basic home-care nurses http://www.careerplanet.co.za/careers/medical-health-life-sciences/nursing/auxilliary-nurse |

durodee:SA had standardised and modified how nurse assistants should practice and the level of education needed. Same also is applicable in other developed and developing countries but can't be equated with the sort of quackery we are witnessing here in Nigeria. In other countries, there are boards to regulate this workers even in Ghana they have nursing assistant schools which gave it the much needed legal backing. Do we have it here...no. Everything about us even health is a classical cut and join. 2 Likes |

TheArchangel: This I have stated earlier on this thread """Countries have all the rights to determine what they want or legalize. "" I think pressures should be mounted on the Nursing Council to look at ways to regulate the profession rather than fight to abolish it. Nature abhors a vacuum. Traditional birth attendants still take deliveries in Nigeria whether we like it or not. Basically because modern healthcare in some areas is still very rudimentary and people must deliver or as a necessity, try to get well if sick. |
Re: Qualified Nurse Or Auxiliary Nurse (difference) by Lexusgs430: 11:43pm On Feb 08, 2016 |
brighthp: They work together because, unfortunately the Nursing Assistants are required to help or assist the qualified Nurses, perform roles and duties that can easily be delegated. NB: If this helps your reasoning, a qualified nurse can perform a nursing assistants role, but a nursing assistant cannot perform the key roles of a qualified and certified Nurse!!!! 1 Like |

durodee:Has it ever occurred to you that in this aforementioned countries that this "auxiliary nurses" attend a standardized training mapped out by the government and regulated. But same can't be said with what's happening in Nigeria, these auxiliaries wants shortcuts if not how can we have colleges of health technology that trains health attendants who are certified to assist nurses in various areas and still tries to indulge a section of people who abhors formal education. These colleges are there and open for admission why won't they apply to it and get formal training maybe a name change to nursing assistant will be okay for the course.. But they want to be nurses without the formal training. It is very pathetic. 1 Like |

Re: Qualified Nurse Or Auxiliary Nurse (difference) by Lexusgs430: 5:33am On Aug 24, 2017 |
diva90: In a properly regulated setup, the Qualified nurses rely on the outputs from their Auxiliary Nurses..... They should both work together like a properly oiled machine...... The RN at the top of the food chain and the NA following closely behind........ |
Re: Qualified Nurse Or Auxiliary Nurse (difference) by diva90: 1:59pm On Aug 24, 2017 |

diva90: But the Nigerian system seems to demonise the NA's. And the more they get criticised, the more they seem to fester.......... |

Though those auxiliary nurses may not have recognized certificate but they are playing a significant roles in public heath. If our government can set a system in which they will undergo a particular training and exam after they have completed their year of training in an hospital, this would encourage and give them confidence to be more effective in their services. Furthermore, government should also look into their salaries cos I have seen many of them been cheated and abused. |
