I came across this in a blog last night and could only laugh cus it has happened in a family I know. An lady(an unemployed school leaver in her early 30s) was brought into the US by her relatives to work as a nanny for a specified number of year before she is settled, a gentleman's agreement no doubt. After a few months she got really caught up by the American life and became over ambitious. She started challenging every detail in the unwritten agreement, she wanted more money, new cloths, off hours for outing, friend, schooling/a job. When her complaint became unbearable, the couple threatened to send her back. Disgruntled, she started the same process as did this in the case of the Texas couple here. In summary, her case landed her back to Nigeria, the couple wriggled off with only a fine. (she later confessed to be working in line with the council of her elder brother in Nigeria, who was equally unemployed) . Let us see how this unfolds. Read Article below.

Flexherbal:how did they treat Nigerians badly, can you read at all? Olodo . First and foremost, I blame the lady Cause she knew What she was getting herself into, but because of the fairy-tale stories she has been hearing about obodo oyinbo and how she would make quick money, she couldn't think twice. People should just know that life in abroad is overrated. Many fall victim because they are desperate. Many Nigerians are not their brother keepers anymore ,they treat eachother like strangers. This was what made that bank manager die abroad, after being maltreated and threatened by a fellow Nigerian who she was working for. Those couple can rot in hell,I don't care. Infact, they should transfer them to Naija prison they should join their brother kanu 15 Likes |

Complaint was probably filed by another bad-belly Nigerian. That's the way they live in Texas -(pull him down attitude). Who on earth will believe these in the USA? Food is probably the cheapest thing in US that even American rats are well-fed. If they stopped her from using hot water, did they seal the tap with a lock when they go out? I knew a story like this where a lady did everything to come to USA. after one year on arrival her relative who wanted her to move in with him promising her a better life but was resisted by her hosts filed criminal complaint against her host alleging unprintable things. One lesson I must teach people: call me any name if you like; If you want peace of mind, keep Nigerians without a legal visa at arms length when they come abroad...don't rent your room to them, not even as extended visitors. Nigerians are generally kind and happy people, but very few terribly bad ones can cause chaos and turn your life into misery. forget about the 'church' they carry on their head...na for mouth Until we hear the side of the couple, don't judge. 35 Likes 4 Shares |

There is no need for stupid "gentleman's" agreements. To stay out of trouble pay them minimum wage at least and make sure there is a signed employment contract with clear hours of work. If you cannot afford it don't delve into it . No need forming unnecessary Bigman. If you have to employ 2 or 3 etc as the case may be so be it. The only reason people run into trouble is because they try to do things they cannot really afford on the cheap. The only justification for bringing in people from Nigeria is to teach your children Nigerian languages, apart from that you can employ people wherever you are and do thorough background checks and monitoring. They don't have to live with you. They can come in and do x number of hours y days a week on specific tasks. If you can't afford it don't break the law.Simples. 7 Likes |

Households with children reported food insecurity at a significantly higher rate than those without children, 19 percent compared to 12 percent. Human beings always want to bite the finger that Fed them.. I remember how my mum took some relatives from the Villa who could not even say a word in English to School while helping with domestic needs...They were loyal and grateful until after about 2years when they knew their route and had gathered enough resource..immediately , thet started acting like they were doing us a favor, rented a room apartment and started feeling like they've arrived... My mum just ignored them and before we cud say Jack, dey started dropping out of Sch. Their younger ones keep calling me like they wanna stay with me I just keep them for cooler. I prefer using outsiders and pay them monthly to ppl I know.. Those you know most times end up biting u. 8 Likes |

Woged2005: This is the story 99.8% of the time, And that is why most Nigerian families actually prefer to get Philippinos for Live in care giver, which is what that lady must've been doing. She's getting coached and she doen't know that at the end of the day, there's a more than high percentage she will still be deported. The only truth in the story might be them seizing her travel documents. In America of today, had she been taking care of the kids and being maltreated, the kids would've reported it at school before it was a month. 1 Like |

I actually believe the story. An agreement was probably reached but the nanny was definitely cheated because the employers were probably looking for awoof! The employers didn't want to pay the going rate for a nanny and figured they could get a Nigerian in Nigeria cheaply. That in itself is not a bad idea but when you start mistreating her and not even paying her a fraction of the ongoing rate, they deserve the football numbers coming their way! They are going to jail for a very long time! I only pity the innocent kids now left without a mother and father. A licensed daycare for ONE child under two is about $250- $475 per WEEK! A live-in nanny charges about $15-$18 per hour. I can't even begin to think the cost of watching over five kids. The very least they could do is give her about $1000 a month for working 8 hours per day. I interviewed a nanny and her mother once. The girl was about 26 and in school, and the mother, a 76 year old, recently lost her husband and stated working as a nanny to keep busy. The stories they told me about how a Nigerian couple treated the mother when she worked as a live-in nanny was crazy! I didn't hire them because it was cheaper for me to use a licensed daycare plus I don't have to worry about a stranger living in my house. By the way, the employers probably didn't want her to use the hot water because she takes too long in the shower and/or the hot water is done by the time they want to take a shower. When you have 8 people in a house, it is not too difficult to imagine that hot water and food will run out very quickly. By the way, why are Nigerians not becoming au pairs? http://www.aupairinamerica.com/fees/ You can make easy money for 1 year watching kids. 1 Like |
