Good evening people.. I've wanted to do this for a while now and I've been tinkering on how to go about it without stepping on toes. I'm not here to sell Aluminium or Stone coated tiles. Apparently motivated by the number of bad roofs I see every single day and clients wailing because they obviously didn't know much about roof.

This thread focuses on roof types, woodwork, Aluminium types, stone coated roof tiles etc.. I'll also like others (clients and builders alike) to join in sharing experiences.

Do you know that ALL aluminium sold in Nigeria is imported from China?

Some companies like Tower, First Aluminium, Sumo import aluminium in plain form called STUCCO. They go ahead to emboss (paint) them in their factories in Nigeria through a process called OVEN BAKING.

These ones are generally more reliable because they withstand our weather better.

Some other companies import already embossed (painted) aluminium from China. Those are the ones generally referred to as IMPORTED.

DO YOU KNOW that there are about 3 different grades of IMPORTED China aluminium roofing sheets With PRICES varying accordingly.

i have many questions about roofing. why are carpenters selling roofing sheet? why do they sell cheaper than company? and why are many alluminium companies has no good website? even when they have one, they seems to be selling through agents? do you know any good alluminium company in enugu?

Not a roofing expert, but just my own experience.
What you will find is that so many people are just out there to rip you off. notice how I didnt say everyone.

Best thing, go direct to the company and avoid any middleman. You will be suprised !!

In my own experience, one man claiming to be from a well known roofing company came to my site brandishing a fake business card, came to measure the roof etc. He didnt know that I already had my own plan which was to go to the company direct, when I went to the company, I was told that his measurement wasnt thier official figures, and besides the guy no longer worked for them. So it would have been a case of dealing with a middleman or a wrong person, some people just think that one is a mugu or one is printing money under ones bed. Its just shocking that there are hardly any honest people in Nija these days...

There are factors that determine how many squaremetres you aluminum covering will be.

1) Type of roof (Hip, Gable, Gembrel, Flat etc)
2) Roof design/plan (This accounts for ridges/ gutters, B/board etc)
3) Height of kingpost.

If I see the house plan / pic with measurements included, I can make a better guess.

You can not get Aluminium sizing from floor plan alone. Type of roof and pitch are major factors

Yes I can. But you will have to do with Google pictures. I've been trying to compile materials from so I can give Nigerian examples but work and phone loss has been holding me back

The most common roof types I've seen in Nigeria are cross hipped and cross gabled roofs.

Most homes use modified versions of either the gable or hip roof
. Some also use the pyramid, monoslope /shed roof. The most challenging one is the gambrel roof. Not common but it exists.

The first step to getting a good, durable roof is to use the correct type of Hardwood. Most carpenters buy softer wood so that nailing it will be easy for them.

Even if your carpenter uses soft wood, it's not like your roof is going to collapse immediately. But after a while, say 3-5 years, go inside the roof and you will start seeing powder or moulds.

If your carpenter uses softwood (he will tell you it's hardwood. There's no way you will know), It's better if you use aluminium roofing sheets because it is lightweight.

For those using stone coated tiles, you have to take extra care on the type of wood bought for you. Softwood cannot carry the weight of stone coated tiles (4-6.5kg per tile) for long especially as carpenters use STRUTS sparingly these days.

You can get hardwood supplied for the following prices.

2x6x12- 650

2x3x12- 350
2x2x12- 250

I'd say Bodija market. There's good wood there. You only get the good wood if you can identify it.

DO YOU know some aluminium are mixed with steel? Its also sold in factories to unknowing customers. It's cheaper for both the importer and for the installer too.. It's usually heavier than normal and doesn't bend easily. You might not easily detect it.

SOME IMPORTERS go to China and do these things in order to reduce cost.

Lovely roof Oga Egunmogaji. I like roofs like this, but my only fear is the height of the roof, putting Nigerian weather into consideration.

Hi Write2Obi, my laymans opinion is that the height will be okay. There are many houses in old Bodija GRA Ibadan that has this roof.

Look at the attached picture, it's of a house currently being built by Bitswork. It's the same style roof that my architect designed for me but I want to see if I can throw a curve into it.

It's up to us to put up structures with interesting components.

Not at all.

The modern roof panels are specially treated now to repel the Suns rays and besides it can always be vented.

Both my structures will have simple solar powered whole house fans. When these pulls in hopefully cooler air from the outside via open windows and dumps it in the attic, the by natural factor any trapped hot air in the attic will escape via discrete roof vents.
