For those of you who don't know Mbaise. It's a region and a people in Imo State, well known for their costly bride price.
Fortunately abi unfortunately, my friend wey dey live for Abuja see one Mbaise girl come promise her marriage.
They both decided to return home for the introduction and agreed to cut cost so that the issue bride price wouldn't be a barrier.
The girl promised to talk to her people.
Fast-forward home, me too follow dem go.
So we visited the girl's people, following the direction she gave us. My friend come with him papa and uncle and another guy.
After all the normal rituals, they presented us the list.
Na mumu mumu things self full am:
Wrappers for women, wrappers for men, snuff, make up kits for young ladies, clothes and sandals for children, goats, drinks of different kinds, enough yam, rice, beans and garri, ororo, ladies okada, community this, community that. My guy did the math and the money value for those things were almost 1.1 milla!
Even him papa and uncle no fit talk. We just open mouth dey look. Ordinary water dem no even give us. Everybody face strong like say na fight we carry come.
We tell dem say we go come back in two days time.
But na for night my guy wake me say make we dey go back to Abuja.
Two days later, the girl called and my friend told her that we're back to Abuja. Make she dey there dey with her killer squad dey wait for person wey dem go extort.

Honestly it's outrageous!! And the list is according to educational qualification o! The more educated the longer the list.
I thought it was only mbaise till my husband's first cousin married an mbano girl. The guy who is just a labourer,a maison o, spent close to 1 milla untop a babe wey no get any work o.No be say she go school o.nothing nothing. No be say she get handiwork! Nothing ! The funny thing is that he was proudly recounting the marriage process to my husband and I because we missed the occasion; na so my husband dey look him and his wife. At the end of the story my husband asked him "Dee,didn't you tell them what you do for a living?"

They didn't get married to millionaires but they get married with millions of naira. Mbaise's greed for money is scaring suitors away, that's why you'd find 38-year old ladies still single and searching there.

It's your husband that would be in charge of collecting bride price when the time comes... and hopefully you guys would be financially good hence no need to extort money from in laws. . All these stories we hear are cases of hungry/greedy in laws. ...

Also, things may have changed by then..we're talking about over two decades from now..

whoever would marry your daughter would. . Despite the high bride price now, mbaise ladies still get married. .

Don't lose a good man cos of some flimsy stuff..

Went with my paddy for introduction and traditional marriage at ENYIOGWUGWU mbaise. Believe you me, he did not spend up to 500k.

I think it has to do with how reasonable the family is

Op am from mbaise, and is not like that in my place, just give ur inlaw 30k for the umunna and youth and 20k for the women, with a bag of rice, salt, stockfish, tin tomatoes and soaps. Then u can settle ur inlaw with any amount u feel like. The only important thing is the umunna and the women. Every girl want to change her surname now.

We don't charge up to 100k in my place. We consider the church and traditional weddings expenses that the suitor will later bear.

When I see topics like this, what comes to mind next is see "poverty"....O God please give me wealth so that when I am about getting married even if they call 10m, I will gladly pay. OP pray to be successful. What is 1.1m? Dude pray for God's blessings. When my sister got married only introduction was entering millions let alone traditional and white....I pray to have the resources and marry who I like rather than lamenting.....
