I can not call this inferiority complex but stupidity of the highest order.why, you may ask. The reason is not far fetch; I went to a resort in Maldives Island, see how these Europeans who came for tour, are admiring my skin and the instrument I am carrying when I dive into the ocean bank, they are feeling as if GOD should turn their skin to black. My skin was shining like kiwi black. Please Mama stop bleaching Ur children, when U go out there, people still cherish this black skin and is not susceptible to disease, easy to heal when cut, a example, my friend who is a german, when we were swimming, we dive into an area with hard corel reef, we both had a cut on our legs, mine healed within four days but my friends injury still look fresh because of his skin. We should thank GOD for whom we are and how we are created. I LOVE MY BLACK SKIN MENN.... 5 Likes |

debola23: Smh. Just hear yourself. Is it not the same anti inflammatory cream everybody is screaming about that it bleaches that you are "mixing" with ori for your babies skin? Bleacher alert !!!! Why would you apply a steroid cream on a child that has no skin conditions? You need JESUS ! 5 Likes |

Totfulguy: I define the self as the part of humans that can not be changed or altered. The self is what makes us who we are. The skin is merely an outer shell. If men can study to alter their natural state of ignorance, if we can weightlift to build muscle mass. What is so damning about skin bleaching? It's just slightly altering the outer shell. It's low self esteem for Africans to keep on rehashing the same talking points. Changing one's skin doesn't make them a different person, and if Africans weren't so disconnected from their sense of self, they would realize that. 4 Likes |

At the individual level we can say that people can do what they like but when it is a social phenomena or trend then we need to examine it and its social impact too. I think that is quite a responsible approach. Currently many bleaching creams are considered toxic and are actually banned or prescription only but let us assume they are safe or a safe alternative can be developed. The question is is there social pressure to bleach at the population level and what is the impact on society. We cannot divorce this consideration from our colonial history and so on. In the Caribbean e.g there is discrimination against dark skinned people in a population where there is a range on colours based on mixed races. So the question is does society disadvantage dark skinned people? Or privilege lighter skinned ones unfairly We should not plant the idea in our children that being black or dark is a flaw that needs fixing. We should encourage them to be proud of being black 1 Like |

Acidosis: honestly tell em ooo, Nigerians we sabi peddle rumours no be small. Buh a lighter note I completely agree with the OP, all the points raised were spot on. The issue of bleaching is problematic in our society, Buh the issue of bringing kids into an already bloated case is where I dont find funny. Except in a few exception the majority of people patronizing children bleaching are still the high class in the society, making me wonder where is the exposure and education this people claim to have. 1 Like |

Kalvan: You are correct, Nigerians apparently bleach to show as a sign of wealth - evidence of good living. Several years ago, we measured comfort by how obese someone was. A 40-inch stomach was minimum for a man to be called wealthy. Until hypertension and diabetes sent people to their early graves. With the current trend, skin cancer and liver poisoning will be leading causes of death. If I was a medical student now I will consider specialising in dermatology. Make a killing thenthen. cococandy: funbact a is a steroid and bleaching is one of the side effects if used for a long time. A lot of mothers ignorantly mix it with ori and use on their babies skin. It makes the babies skin so smooth but most mothers dont know it bleaches. Long term effect of use of funbact a or any steriod is bad. I condemn the bleaching of children. Do you know some mothers go as far as putting bleach in the bathing water of their children to make them fair? They do anything to make their child fair. This is what i call phobia for dark skin. Some of those women were born dark, but bleached their skin along the line and became fair, married fair men, so they dont want anything to give them away that they were originally dark. Allow a child to grow up as a child. When she grows up, let the decision to tone or not to tone her skin be solely hers. 3 Likes |

Teenage girls/Nigerian Police Inspectors worst best friend... sad enough, when you tell them the cream is bad for them they ignore you as if you don't know the fvck you are talking about...until it's darkening effects sets in... I think all these Celebrities are part of this problem... When you see their instagram pages and how fair all of them are...You'd know the bleaching frenzy is just beginning. Sad but true 1 Like |
