@ brokensword, US is cool but you'll love the alternative building solutions from asia. (Malaysia, Singapore are area of interest). Their building style seems to match with ours in Africa. 1 Like |

Oga EgunMogaji,I've got a question to ask.what are the construction techniques used in these state,California, new mexico, Alabama,Texas and Arizona, I've been doing a lot of research with regards to their system of building, it seems they correlate with our African style. Remove (Sheetrock)I know its been used for wall finishing,I want to know if those state has any systems that has to do with concrete technology. thanks. |

brokensword: So it varies wildly from state to state. For example brick clad homes can be found in new $80,000 homes in Texas but you'll only mostly find them on ubber expensive homes in California. The basic building block of most of this areas are wood frame. Either in 2x4 or 2x6 for luxurious homes. They place these wooden substructure on a concrete pad. In most cases it's high strength concrete mix that is poured directly on the prepared ground. One of the first things to do on most sites is to grade the lot and in doing so establish the padding for the house. When you cross over into Arizona and New Mexico then you'll start seeing some Adobe style homes. Basically adobe homes have different roof structures and wall renderings to deal with the extreme conditions like 110 degrees heat. I've never lived in and will never live in Alabama so I do not know their building styles but I think they too use wood mostly and have basements. I'm confident in saying that 90% of non custom homes in California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico are wood framed. My wish is to see concrete used for perimeter wall but have the partitioning in the interior done with wood or steel. Even lintels can be off wood or steel. We just use too much caustic concrete. I'll post some pics when I get home later in the evening. PS: I'm watching the build of an 8 story apartment building from the window of my office. The major structure is steel frame, but the rest is wood. This is all on top of a concrete foundation. |

brabus: Discussion only gets boring after money has changed hands. Never before... This is one of many "boring" discussion you have danced around. I'm convinced that Brabus never really gives a damn about his customers' interests. The fact that he brokered the deal is good reason for a honest person to seek justice for his client by all means. By so doing, he clears his own name. 5 Likes |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by BrabusNG: 3:43am On Feb 18, 2016 |
bugmenot: Interesting! One of the thing the police investigator said in the ile oluji saga was that you came here to complain that someone who built your house for over five months with detail account of kobo kobo expenditure is trying to dupe you and that's the end of all accusations because all the stories didn't add up. Now ask me, was approval the only thing I helped my client to handle. No! Local govt money was paid through someone I recommended and no story. And all these people are legitimate officials of the Lagos state civil service and not agents. Before the story got here, the client and the approval guy had been discussing the issue behind my back without story until it got here. Thanks for making your point anyway. It's your opinion. It doesn't necessarily translate to who I am. The question I asked here again is if the client decides to deal with the approval guy because Bugmenot recommended him. Is it fair to call Bugmenot a thief, a fraud and all sorts of name? How do you suggest I clear my name? By calling the approval guy all sort of names here on Nairaland. Or continue to deceive the client that all is well when I knew there's no luck yet? Or just pay off the money without looking back? What do you think I wanted to do when I suggested that we go to Eti Osa Office together? What will you think if I paid off the money without proofing my innocence? Na Brabus chop the money. People find it easy to believe that I want to go and kill the client over 400k than to go and get justice and clear my name when I suggested we visit the office last year December. If you were me what would you have done differently to proof your innocence? I can only imagine what would have happened if I was the one who sold the govt acquisition land which is the cause of the whole kasala in the first place but because the person is not a Nairalander or a Brabus, everybody choose to overlook that side and pick on their usual target. E se o! Until I'm convicted in a court of law, I'm sorry we will be rolling here together till eternity. So if this discussion not boring to you baba, I just talk my own. I've asked that people should move their complaints to my thread dedicated for such and allow other people enjoy their thread, the discussion doesn't have to be here. 5 Likes |

brokensword: As promised: Here are some New Mexico homes, still wood framed. Look at the final finish. Maybe you can learn from this, maybe not. I think you will be able to. Disclaimer: I am not saying that ALL houses in New Mexico are like these (of those that like to catalogue my posts )

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 4:15am On Feb 18, 2016 |
brokensword: Some construction in Texas. Look at the foundation slab poured directly on the ground. Look at the exclusive wood framing. What can you learn from this? Not sure. I will learn lots in new system. Good finishing. Just look at the quality of the framing. There are specialist craftsmen that are just framers, that is there occupation. You have framers, finishers, roughers, etc all in carpentry. Look at the elevated structure. See those two tine pillars that are holding it up. If this was Nigeria there may be up to 4 idiotic gigantic roman pillars holding it up. Good luck on your research.

brokensword: Rounding up is some stuff from California. Look at the concrete floor being lifted in as one unit. Look at the quality of some of the brick work. We use far too much mortar in my opinion. What can you learn from this? Use less mortar, have cleaner wall for people like me that doesn't mind leaving the wall bare without render.

spyder880: For structural integrity you have to maintain set distance between each wood in framing. So you have 12 off or on center, 16 off or on center, etc There's a method to our madness.
