As at the time l was starting with 3 families of rabbits,my original intention was to breed them so that l may supply my family with 2 rabbits per week for consumption. However l haven't been able to do that because no matter how many rabbits l have at any point in time, people keep asking me to sell and l always have no choice;we only eat them once in a while! It may interest you to know that what l am doing about my wonderfully creatures here on nairaland is the first and the only of any kind of publicity l have ever done.People (mostly co-fish farmers) just got to to see them on my farm and that was all: People tell people and l sell! For your feed question,l use only leaves during rainy season and both leaves and formulated feed during dry season. The formulated feed, l do in form of poultry feed not pellets,to avoid extra cost and simply mix well with water to avoid having to offer them water to reduce workload. Most interestingly, a local canteen has just given me a deal of supplying them 5 big rabbits every week.l am sure they intend selling them as game(bush meat) to their customers. This,l must admit,is hard for me to meet up with (supply),if you know what l mean! |

How can one get in Lagos? |
Re: The 2nd Most Prolific Animals!!! by GlorytoGod: 6:14am On Feb 19, 2016 |
Rabbit Cages By recommendation, all wire cages are better. You can either purchase your cages from a reputable manufacturer or build them by yourself. From experience, even though wooden cages require more cleaning and possibly sanitizing, they are cheaper and easily manipulated.l can comfortably say that once you leave some few mm space between the planks on the floor of cage, for proper draining of urine, and you are prepared to always take out their poo two to three times a week, you will be OK. Each space for one rabbit on the cages should be around 36" wide,30" deep and 18" high (minimum of 30"x30"x18" for the does and 30" wide, 30" deep and 18" high (minimum of 24"x30"x18" for the bucks. The floor should be 1/2" x 1" 14 gauge galvanized wire (if you insist on using wire ) The door opening should be at least 12" x 12", although bigger is nice. Doors swinging inward will keep the rabbits in just in case you forget to latch the door. Doors that open outward will allow you to more easily get inside the cage without pushing the rabbits aside. It all depends on your personal preference. At Glory to God Farms, we prefer cages that open out, hinged on the right side. Both types have their unique benefits. You also may want to consider getting "baby saver" walls. This is 1/2" x 1" wirea long the bottom 4 to 6 inches of the walls (same wire as the floor). This will save litters (kittens) from falling out of the cage onto the ground and dying when a new mother mistakenly has the litter outside the nest box.Wait a minute, what do you intend to do with their poo?Throw it away? Oh No.It is huge huge resources for planting. Our vegetables and other plants are happy and growing huge and more recently, our sack farming can't be any easier using rabbit poo! I will post more on rabbit poo and on wait for it.... 'rabbit urine fertiliser'! 1 Like |

gowaga68:To get them to Lagos is easier, only 4 hour journey, compared to Ilorin-Anambra which is 8 hours. You can send money to me and l will send your rabbits to you. (l won't dupe anybody for anything) Alternatively, you can come over, send someone or if you know of a driver plying Lagos-Ilorin. |

GlorytoGod:There Is A way you can construct wooden cages without ever having to clean the cage |
Re: The 2nd Most Prolific Animals!!! by GlorytoGod: 11:27am On Feb 19, 2016 |
vicdamm:You are right sir. From my last post, one can deduce that cages constructed with right mesh-wire are almost 100% self-cleaning ;taking care of feed remnant will probably be the only form of cleaning left to be done. |
Re: The 2nd Most Prolific Animals!!! by vicdamm(m): 11:41am On Feb 19, 2016 |
GlorytoGod:Constructing a wooden cage with wire mesh big enough for poop and urine to drop out but small for new born bunnies from dropping out as the base of each layer and aluminium roof which would slant backwrd as the top of each layer with spce between each cage. This way, all waste whtsoever would drop out nd slide down like rain on a roof To make it more interesting, automatic drinkers can be installed so the only thing one has to worry about is feeding |
Re: The 2nd Most Prolific Animals!!! by GlorytoGod: 1:07pm On Feb 19, 2016 |
vicdamm:Really, there are diverse ways of constructing cages but from my personal experience, it is easier and more cost effective to have one large general pen for them(just like a poultry house) so that there are only two or three cages, each one having between 8 & 10 pens, to hold only the heavily pregnant does (females) and the servicing males. Each crossed doe is palpated(check its womb for kittens) to know when to put it in a pen;this way,one ensures the doe takes good care of it's kittens. On the floor spread sand of one and a half to two inch thickness so that the rabbits stay clean.Remember to add only one mature buck(male) because two or more mature males will fight until one of them is dead! This is applicable to any shared environment,a pen inclusive. Moreover, each doe that has its kittens weaned after a month(with its pregnancy already two weeks old) is returned to the general place. At Glory To God Farms,we also have a second but not as big general place where we first put all weaners for another one month before we finally send them to the big general place. |

GlorytoGod:So, how much will it cost me to get just 3 family for a start? Am not base in Lagos but somewhere in the North (but will pick them at Lagos). |
Re: The 2nd Most Prolific Animals!!! by GlorytoGod: 8:14pm On Feb 19, 2016 |
gowaga68:A family of three and a half months old is sold for N7,500 ( l bought for N10,000 when l was starting) but l don't have them now ( l just sold 17 families to 2 people who want to start commercial breeding). Remember that 2 females and 1 male make up a family. However a family of two months old, which l have for sale now, is sold for only N3,000 Therefore 3 families cost N9,000 only. |
