Op what you're suggesting is akin to cutting off ones head as a solution to a migraine. Take note of the following point... 1.USD is not the legal tender for transactions with Nigeria but outside it's shores. 2.At $35/barrel we are not getting enough dollars into our nation(remember dollars will only come from exports and foreign direct investments). 3.Say on a scale of 1-10 the overall demand for dollar is 7 then the CBN has 5. 4.Inside this 5,3 has to be kept aside at all times to finance essential importation like weapons to fight BH,raw materials for manufacturers, spare parts for critical infrastructures etc. 5.If 3 is kept aside for essential importation of whatever we need,it then means 2 is allocated to not so essential importation like BDC etc. Now what you're suggestion is saying CBN should bring out all 5 ,when demand is seven. Now assuming CBN exhausts all 5,the 7 is not even yet satisfied so what happens when another 3 is needed by say early next year?Your suggestion is just a short term fix with long term disastrous effects. Imagine by next year,Bokoharam wars picks up and we urgently need some million dollars to import arms, what then happens?Your guess is as good as mine.If everyone has access to dollars indiscriminate importation will abound further crippling our various industries and service providers and ultimately our economy. On the other hand, this is a blessing in disguise for exporters. With cheaper naira exports becomes cheaper but we really don't export anything. The solution is for us to stop all exportation of crude, refine them and sell to the African subregion for a start and later outside Africa. We will only sell in dollars,so the FX burden will be on those importing our refined products. For the ordinary man,you can contribute your quota of strengthening the naira and our economy by buying made in Nigeria goods and services(medical, education, luxury vacations )even if it's aba made manage it like that, with time they will standardize them due to high patronage. 5 Likes |

989900: Brev, even if it's going to work, it won't solve any problem other than create another bubble, different from the current bubble created by the CBN, to keep the naira at a fixed rate, by not letting it take its real value. I'm sure you know that by keeping the naira at a fixed rate, the CBN is depleting the reserves to do that, no? And when you create a next bubble parallel to that, you'll need to further deplete the reserves to do that. When the reserves get empty - how are you going to stay afloat? One thing most people don't understand is that: apart from the fact that Naij is heavily dependent on oil, every other sector in the naij economy is also dependent on oil. And when you have got an economy that's based on one commodity like that, you've to always save for days like this one, hence other oil producing countries have huge reserves. The best thing to do now is turn it into a blessing in disguise and allow other sectors to grow, independent of oil. Manufacturing and agriculture are two key areas that can turn the tide, within a short period. I'll go back to referencing Russia cos it's a perfect case study for naij. Read about what happened to the Russian economy between 1997-1998 when it defaulted, with economic crisis - and also read about how it was able to escape the economic crisis of 2008. |

LRNZH:Why GEJ now? How about when the oil price was above $100 per barrel. Why are we putting Nigeria corruption problem on GEJ?Those who entrenched and nurtured corruption in Nigeria we know them, Now they have become saints. How about the gulf oil wind fall, was it GEJ that swallowed it too? this country is pathetic. No government in Nigeria since the regime of Gowon have never made noise about diversifying the economy but when the oil money start rolling in they forget and fill their pockets.Let us stop making GEJ the scape goat for what we are all guilty of. |

Re: What Exactly Will Go Wrong If The CBN Floods The Economy With Dollars? by onoja12: 9:40pm On Feb 19, 2016 |
economically speaking the reason why the dollar is high is because of demand and supply, meaning the quantity of dollar been earned is not enough to match the quantity been spent, hence the need to make sure we spend our few dollars been earned on the most important things and those not so important would have to source there dollar by themselves. we don't have enough dollar for several reasons but the two main reasons is the fall of the price of oil and secondly because the former government practically emptied the CBN of all the dollar to be shipped out of the country or spent on election. i hope I was able to answer your question Obiagelli: 1 Like |

SirShymexx: But the country is too corrupt? You seek funding for agric or manufacturing, the bank frustrate genuine entrepreneurs with almost impossible conditions, while they give politicians and connected businessmen collateral free loans. The so called focus on Agriculture is a practical sham, with no guideline or proposal as I type. It's a long haul into oblivion as it currently stands 1 Like |

Firefire: Printing more Naira notes is not a solution, the simple supply and demand economy equilibrium will kick, too much supply of Naira in circulation, leads to less demand, thereby forcing the value of Naira downwards to the next point where supply vs demand balances out...this will further lead to the appreciation of dollar against the Naira and the resulting effect will be inflation, because as the value of Naira decreases because there is too much of it in circulation, it's worth decreases so is the goods & services it could buy....but activities like these have to be maintained to certain point such that, Naira will not become a dumping ground for all manner of imports and a crippled export ability, thereby affecting manufacturing activities that rely on foreign raw materials. Ironically, part of the solution to the current problem is to soak a lot of Naira out of circulation. The inability of various states to pay salaries in helping this as Naira is not been pump into the economy as much as it should have. Shortage of Naira in the economy drives demands for Naira up, thereby driving the value of Naira up to the next upper equilibrium point, but a point have to be maintained so as not to stiffed growth, imports, etc... |

But we keep deceiving ourselves all this while propounding economic theories( beautiful theories that has worked wonders in other countries), but the question is, why is it not working here? The answer is faulty foundation.. We copied the US constitution but refused to copy their political and economic structure, that's the bane of our problem and until we correct this criminal mistake, we will keep propounding beautiful theories but it will never work. |

dyydxx:Nigeria is structured Politically/Economically to FRAUDULENTLY, or corruptly hide stolen wealth overseas. Corruption in other nations is different from Nigeria's. Nigerian Banks don't work to build up their customer base. Neither is MTN, or the Oil Companies. But they're making higher profits than elsewhere. Now the large population of unemployed graduates is ready to challenge the STATUS QUO. 1 Like |

grandstar: Beautiful scenario, but you left out the most important aspect...where will the government get those dollars from? CBN does not print dollars, our foreign reserve had dwindle, oil no longer commands the price tag, it use to...even if we want to foolishly empty all out oil wells and want to produce hands over feet in order to earn more foreign reserves, OPEC quota limitation will save us from such self-destruction. This is exactly what happens, when a lady who did not find it necessary to cultivate other talents but felts that her beauty is enough to carry her through life and for a while, she appear to be right, all manner of men flock to her solely on account of her beauty and she did well, but as age, stress and time takes their tolls, her beauty starts fading away and the men not seeing any other talents or reason to stay behind flock to the next beauty on the block leaving her to her miseries...at her old age, she start struggling to go back to school to learn some trade and acquire other talents....that is the story of Nigeria, we neglected virtually every other sector and rode our economy on oil and now that the suitors have taken a hike, we want to develop agriculture, commodity, etc...as if 'na beans'...how many mechanism farms do we have in Nigeria, how many international agricultural trade alliances have we formed? How many supply treaties have we signed? What about meeting international agricultural standards, etc? The bitter truth is, we have not reached rock bottom yet, brace up for the ride downward, because it is going to be a bubby ride...we have to hit that supply and demand equilibrium for the Naira and our economy to start looking attractive again. Government initiatives and policies just provides a cushion for the ride downward, they do not solve the underlying problem, which is..we do not have enough items to supply that will attract foreign reserve at the moment to completely replace oil.. 1 Like |

We have been running a fake economic system. A rent seeking economy. An economy that import everything and export nearly nothing. An economic that produce nearly nothing . The food we eat are 70% foreign. When we were making money from the only products that the world buys from us, our government mismanaged everything. Now, we are facing the reality. The reality is here. The people who knew that a time like this is coming have been making noise but no one listen to them. The hard way the only way is to turn to productivity and patronising whatever we can produce locally rather than promoting other nations economic activities. The magic to make naira do better again is in our hands. 3 Likes |

linearity: Wrong.. The dollars that will be shared out will be what is earned monthly by government. They won't be given actual dollars but dollar certificates something akin to travellers cheques which are fully convertible to naira when presented to the CBN or perhaps banks. This policy will create an export boom. Since cost of funds will collapse to single digits. Companies can now borrow boldly and import worldbeating machinery. This will make them very competitive. As they grow in size, these companies will eventually outgrow the local market and start a massive focus on the export market. 1 Like |

Obiagelli: It is possible. But that is not the issue. The issue is where does the Government get the dollars from. Remember that we dont half as much dollar revenue as we used to get in the past. It would therefore mean we need out foreign reserves to augment whatever revenue we generate. Note that the foreign reserves are already badly depleted. If we were to continue defending the naira with more dollars a time will come when there will be none left in reserve to defend the naira. Imagine what will happen then. Flooding the economy with dollars is only a very short term temporary solution. Its like building a tsunami wall using only plywood. 1 Like |

this Henry boyo na winsh. him and soludo too get brain. this man has said it all. devaluation can not solve this problem. our problem is a structural and fundamental one. those campaigning for devaluation are sent from the pit of hell. the only thing that can save us now is a simultaneous five pronged approach. rapid import substitution to conserve our scarce dollars, rapid export promotion and increase to increase our fx earnings , rapid infrastructure development to bring about industrialization and a total overhaul of the monetary system and model used to run the economy and lastly bring our refineries to full working capacity so as to stop the massive drain on our fx due to petroleum products imports. anytime from now fuel might start to be scarce again because of non payment due to the govt being almost broke. the cbn governor needs to be fired. we need a real economist not a former chief executive money chaser. the people occupying the offices of the president governor of the cbn the minister of finance minister of power works and housing minister of petroleum are the most important people in this administration. they need our cooperation support amd prayers. 2 Likes 1 Share |
