gcof: FOREIGN RESERVE SINCE 1999 OBJ: INHERITED $3.7b in 1999 LEFT $45.0b in 2007 YAR ADUA: INHERITED $45.0b 2007 GREW TO $63b in 2008 drew from the reserve to boost the economy during the 2008/ 2009 recession and LEFT $47.7 2009 as at the time GEJ took over the mantle the growth was as a result of savings when oil price was $147 per barrel and he took out of it to shore up the economy when oil price dropped. GEJ: INHERITED $47.7b BUT LEFT $29.2b. from this I hope well meaning Nigerian can see that unlike during the previous administrations that had enough reserve from which the were able to boost the economy, GEJ left barely nothing from which buhari could get fund to bust the economy. NB Yar Adua withdrew about $15b to shore up the economy and still left more than he met on ground but if Buhari is to draw out such money from our reserve today, Nigeria could be bought by dangote. if you don't know how the economy works, ask questions. |

emzila: Yaradua withdrew from our Reserves? The above analysis is a product of the last campaigns. Just to make th factually clear, your Foreign Reserves are not physical funds like vaults in banks. You cannot physically withdraw from it for expenditures. It's a reflection of you balance of trade activities- what you export an what you import. It was reduced during last administration because the CBN Governor(SLS) preferred to defend the naira with the reserves instead of allowing it devalued by market forces. He posited h ha large reserves to do such. And CBN under present administration also towing Same line. I will not say GEJ depleted our reserves. Using such analogy will imply PMB has depleted or 'withdrawn' almost $3b since he cam on board 1 Like |

Nicur:The article you pointed me to simply validates my earlier comment, except you didn't read what I wrote. --- (1) The only quote attributed to Buhari in that article is - “It is sad that the value of the naira has dropped to more than N230 to one dollar; this does not speak well for the nation’s economy’’ (2) Secondly, the article makes reference to NAN (News Agency of Nigeria) as the source. How come NAN was the only media outfit that was able to report about something that was said in an open campaign ground? |

emzila:mr economist, blaming GEJ won't do you any good. Buhari promised heaven and earth before election and its 9 months now. People are suffering for christ's sake even to send out your own hard earned money for your ward's tuition fee is a big problem. Continue to blame Jonathan and before you know it 4 years will go by and when you look back , you will discover you achieved nothing but a trailer load of GEJ blame |

naijaboy756:The discussion is not about me or whether Buhari is governing properly. It's about debunking a false allegation. We can discuss later about Buhari's economic policies and then you can have my views about what I think about the president. --- But I know for a fact that inspite of Buhari's low knowledge of macroeconomics, yours is below that of Buhari. That is why you resort to cheap slander without any intellectual input. If you want us to discuss intelligently about what is responsible for the current exchange rate and what government should do or not do, then I'll be willing to engage you. 1 Like |

gcof:reason why wivea happily stay with their husband is not because they fulfilled all they promise or all that the women expected but because the men are sincere and shows commitment towards fulfilling their promises and the expectations of the woman. Buhari is set and committed to fulfill his promise. his tenure is not over yet, a little break through in made in nigeria ideology or turn around in oil price will change the current situation. |

emzila:in as much as i don't wish for Buhari to fail because it is we the average Nigerians that will feel the effect of his failure. Whenever i hear the current government talking about oil price, i begin to ask the question "what about diversifying of our economy that was promised during election? 9 months you may argue is too small for instant change but 9 months is enough to see the direction a country is headed. If Buhari is still depending on the turn around of oil then, he has not started |

emzila: Please state here what is the meaning and clearly state the compoents of Foreign Reserve. Drop down your politcal sentiments and I openly promise to apologise if you prove me wrong. I want to see your academic treatise which even illustrates how one can draw from Foreign Reserves. We dont use Google and wikipedia for our academic publications, but even for your defence you can Still submit yours. I even want, as a pointer, for you to illustrate how GEJ withdrew from the reserves leaving PMB with little to ' fund' the economy as claimed by you and thus PMB also reducing it further within 9 months. |

gcof: He wasn't satisfied when the exchange rate was 1$= #200 when he was campaigning but he Is absolutely fulfilled now it has risen to $1= #400 under his leadership It took APC 9 solid months to remember that bubu never made such promises, their memory just came back from vacation. A man that didn't even know the name of his political party nor that of his vp while campaigning Is capable of making all manner of cynical statement during the heat of the moment. Too late for damage control, they should have denied the $1=#1 even before bubu won the election but they encouraged it by sealing up their denial mouth because it attracted more gullible faithfuls to APC then only to deny it 9 months after because the deceit has served it's purpose and denial mode fully activated. 1 Like |

SHOPPERS:I wish it were that simplistic. --- The exchange rate is determined by supply and demand of dollars. Yes, Jonathan met the exchange rate @ N150, but you have to understand that he was fortunate to have more inflow of dollars into the country due to high oil prices. The first oil price shock under his administration (from $105 to $60/bbl) saw the CBN devalue the Naira twice in Nov 2014 and Feb 2015. --- Now compare that to an administration who has had to deal with average oil price of $30/bbl. Meaning that the inflow of dollars into the country has reduced significantly to next to nothing, yet our demand/appetite for imports is increasing. Where does the government get FX to satisfy all the import demand? --- I dare say that with the President’s disposition towards self sufficiency and Imports substitution, the naira would be exchanging for less than N150/$ had PMB met oil price @ $100/bbl. 1 Like 1 Share |
