I believe that the jews read their selfish meaning into scripture and hence became blind to truth. When Jesus came he rebuked them for reading the scriptures ignorantly for they were not aware that Christ was the central msg of the bible. The old book talked about things to come and these things were illustrated with things the israelites could relate to(at that time) like animal sacrifice, the sabbath day, physical israel and Egypt etc

Christ came to fulfill all of them. Christ was the reality. And he came for something worthwhile, something bigger than the pleasures/struggles of this world. Unfortunately, they were blind just like you.

When God promised the Israelites a Messiah, they were rather looking for a Political leader who will crush their surrounding enemies, which at all times have oppressed and taken them captive. They spirituality meant little to them.

The Zebedee's mother, came to Jesus to lobby for two political positions for her sons when Jesus takes over from the Romans. But instead, Jesus was talking about dying. What kind of Political leader dies to deliver his country from an empire as strong as Rome?
