Obviously Macsherano plays as a centreback for Barca...that bit was never in question.

That response was to explain to you why Barca still lists Javier Macsherano as a midfielder despite the fact that he has played in as a defender for them for several years

Javier in is own words explains that he is often in the same line as Busqueys whilst performing his primary defensive duties. That's why Barca call him a midfielder, and why he sees himself as a midfielder...because he essentially plays as a midfielder with license to drops deeper as opposed to a centreback who steps forward.

It's important to make this distinction because I'm sure you agree that Javier is a defensive player.

What Javier just told you is that during his primary assignment(Defending) he starts off at the same line as Busquets but drops deeper as required

When a centreback steps into midfield, that is is an offensive and secondary action. That explains why David Luiz who steps into midfield regularly is not regarded as a midfielder.


The same thing can be said about Okazaki...in his primary assignment(Attacking) he is in the same line with Vardy...and only drops down to undertake a secondary defensive assignment.

And that's the difference between Vardy and and a 10...because even during a 10's primary offensive assignment, he still sits behind the striker...

Yes I see it and I'm not going to blame Barca for still calling him a midfielder even he though plays as a CB for Barca. It's so coz a player's natural position or the position he's played the most in his career is usually used to describe him.

Eto'o is a striker and I'm sure he was still called a striker at Inter even though he was playing a winger's position. It's coz you can't use the short time spent at Inter as a winger to judge the long ass time he's spent in his career as a striker. Same goes for other players.


Thierry was a striker, listed as a striker for Barca even though he played as winger for them. 2 or 3 seasons is never enough to dwarf the main position of Henry as a striker for over 6 seasons.

It's same logic for Mascherano. We're talking about a player that has played the DM for River Plate, Corinthians, West Ham, Liverfools and was the position they bought him for, for Barca but couldn't displace Busquets and so therefore had to be accomodated at the CB due to Barca's defensive woes for the past few seasons. Even at that, he plays the DM for Argentina. So it's only right that Barca lists him as a midfielder but a knowledgeable football fan knows he plays as a CB for Barca even though he's a midfielder.

So Javier is midfielder who plays as CB for Barca. And Barca are right to list him as a midfielder. Same thing was done to Eto'o (at Inter) and Thierry (at Barca).
