opeaceo:But talking about it DOES change things, it has ALREADY been changing things. Do you think that if this was 50 years ago, before internet had taken off as a major medium for communication, you'd be seeing the amount of NIGERIAN atheists that you're seeing on this forum alone? Such a thing would've been unheard of simply because the idea that questioning god is okay, and the reasoning behind it would never have been shared. Even if some few brave individuals came to the realization themselves that god & religion are merely a tool to control people, they'd quickly be drowned out by the hordes of nothing but religious people surrounding them. The internet has given skeptics a way to share their ideas and their realizations, not only with other skeptics but with ANYONE capable of reasonable thought, willing to open their eyes. This internet is an extremely powerful agent for change, and seems to be strongly correlated with the move out of religion & religious thought. Personally, the internet was the main source of the information I needed to solidify my doubts about Christianity. And by allowing me to communicate with like-minded others, it also helped me heal the fear and alienation that came with renouncing the religion of my family, friends, and culture. I agree that there does need to be a little more discourse that focuses solely on dismantling religion itself and exposing it's issues, rather than attacking believers as people, just because I am of the psychological understanding that religion is a VERY strong brain-washing force, and indoctrination can render any potentially intelligent, loving, bright, world-revolutionizing person (which I think we all are, especially as Nigerians) intellectually brain-dead just through the fear it instills and the warped worldview it creates. From my perspective, believers are essentially victims of hundreds of years of misled human thought. Without deeper understanding, they're simply doing what they think is right. But there are better ways to live life and to see the world than through a religious lense; sharing that with more people and getting them to understand that is an absolutely worthwhile goal that could really eliminate a lot of religion-caused suffering in this world. Also, recognize that the one-on-one interaction between a believer and an atheist on a forum isn't just between those two individuals. There are thousands of people who view these forums and don't actively participate, and you can guarantee that they too are being influenced and learning from what they read here. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Tellemall:1. The big bang theory is NOT A BELIEF for crying out loud. It's a scientifically-supported collection of explanations based on OBSERVATIONS OF THE NATURAL WORLD. It could be wrong, absolutely - the scientific method always allows for the possibility of wrong predictions. But with the EVIDENCE that we have, the likelihood of it being wrong is very slim. Red shift has proven that the universe is constantly expanding, even now - all celestial bodies that we are able to observe are moving further away from eachother by several kilometers a year. We can measure that. There is cosmic radiation that we can detect via machines we have in our planetary orbit, that indicate backlash from a prior massive release of energy. We KNOW that the universe is in constant motion, we can observe stars and galaxies colliding all the time with telescopes and other tools. This is GOOD evidence to support that at one point, there was a very small area of energy and mass that expanded over a very large amount of time into the modern universe, and that that expansion is still occuring. How, to you, is this indication of baseless belief? How is this anything like believing that an extremely human-like, emotional, ego-driven "god" figure literally poofed the earth and every planetary body into existence as they presently are, simply because he felt like it? What evidence is there to support such an idea? Because modern day scientists have not found any; instead they have discovered a massive amount of evidence to the contrary. And for that reason, creation really can't even be considered a theory as you put it, at least not in the scientific sense. There is no collection of peer-reviewed evidence supporting the christian creation idea, which is the only way something can go from a hypothesis to a theory in science. 2. Please view my earlier post on why Christian thought specifically is attacked the most. cloudgoddess: 2 Likes |

cloudgoddess: If it's not a belief, why do you believe it? You stake out your faith on it, don't you? You would shake your head at another who couldn't grasp it, or smile at their inability to believe it or perhaps even descend on them At the end of the day, anything people believe in is an illusion. According to atheists. Therefore the belief that there is no God is an illusion itself. 1 Like 1 Share |

Tellemall:If it's not a belief, why do you believe it? Because there is evidence, as I just summarized for you if you actually read it. Reliable and repeatedly confirmed evidence is the only way us humans can ever confidently "know" anything (without just lying to ourselves). If evidence was released that proved that the universe was standing still, that planets and galaxies didn't collide, that there is no cosmic radiation, then as a reasonable person I'd obviously be forced to change my mind about the validity of the big bang theory. But creationism still wouldn't necessarily follow from that, all I would know at that point was that the big bang isn't true. You stake out your faith on it, don't you? What do you mean by this? At the end of the day, anything people believe in is an illusion. According to atheists. Therefore the belief that there is no God is an illusion itself. Belief there is no god is a lack of belief because of lack of evidence. People who insist that their god exists are the ones making the positive claim, which THEY need to defend. There have been over 4,000 gods proposed throughout human history. How can I know yours is real and the other 3,999 aren't, without any reliable evidence? The default position is that NONE of them exist, until at least one of them is proven. Show the solid evidence for god, and then we can talk. Yes, everything anyone believes is an illusion in a way, because human thought is abstract. A thought about something isn't that thing itself. But that doesn't mean that we can't use our abstract senses to identify consistencies in reality. That's what science is all about. 1 Like |

cloudgoddess: You strongly believe there is no God. Faith is belief. That's the thing your inner man lives by. And it's an illusion. The only people who you atheists have a problem with, because they believe in a supreme being, are the Christians. You always say it's an illusion. So your disbelief is a form of belief and is an illusion. Anyway, I'm done on this. People believe what they want to believe in. All beliefs are right, except when they are wrong. Like atheism is wrong. Added: the whole operation of science on hypothesis, evidence then theory only applies in things not of faith. Any scientist can tell you that. The mind is a different place entirely. Science can't hold it down. Until I see a recreation of the big bang that produced intelligent life, I'll never believe it. It had no evidence so far. |
Re: Why Do Atheists Attack Mostly Christians? by cloudgoddess(f): 3:05pm On Feb 24, 2016 |
Tellemall:It feels like you are skewing definitions to support your view and posing non-sequitor arguments. Essentially the meaning of "faith" is believing in something in the absense of evidence - so of course that's out of the realm of science, because science only operates based on evidence. Science would not be possible (more relateably, this computer you are using and the modern medicine you depend on would not even exist) if "faith" positions were held with equal weight as evidence-based positions. How exactly could such a recreation be produced? And where is the recreation of a god entity placing the universe into its present position? Why is it that you easily disregard the evidence for the big bang, yet see no issue with the desperate lack of evidence for your position? If evidence isn't backing your position, then what is? Could it be sheer indoctrination? I responded to your edit, and covered the rest of what you said in this post. Also, if you're still here, have you read any books, watched any documentaries, or taken any courses on the topics we're presently discussing (the big bang, evolution, astrophysics, neuroscience)? Please be honest. Because its very common of the types of arguments you're attempting to make to be a result of lack of education in these areas. In case you don't respond, I'll just recommend some books here that I've read which clarified these topics nicely for me. Hopefully someone checks them out. A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking World reknowned physicist gives a thorough explanation of time, the universe, and the big bang. Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution by Neil Degrasse Tyson World-renowned black astrophysisist explains the big bang and many other astrophysical phenomena. Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation by Bill Nye Bill Nye, famous science educator and engineer gives an easily digestible introduction to evolution, its important position as the uniting force behind biology, and the current body of scientific evidence behind it. Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman Nobel Prize winner and psychiatrist explains thought and the mind, with evolutionary explanations for our most common mental thinking patterns. |

Tellemall: Do you actually think that every experiment can be recreated in the lab? The sun is just a tiny fraction of the energy that was released from the big bang, and now you are asking scientists to recreate the big bang just that you may believe. Science does not wish to make anyone belive in anything, infact you are encouraged to challenge the big bang theory that is how science grows. However, you can not just challenge the big bang theory based on what is written in the bible. Read other scientific works, study the theory and dismantle it's merits. If your argument is validitated through a peer-review process, You will gain instant global recognition as the man that stated the improbability of the big bang theory. 2 Likes |

GeneralShepherd: Now you've got a new defense for science and atheism. Do you think that every experiment can be recreated in the lab? You say. Of course, since that is the backbone of most atheism, the fact that there was a big bang. Because atheists tout science like it's everything to them. Such an occurrence is so random, why do you feel it's what brought about mankind?. If you cannot replicate the big bang that brought about intelligent life as your evidence, then do not look down on creation the way Christians say it happened. Your description of the process by which scientific works are noted is irrelevant. It doesn't answer my questions or make your big bang theory more plausible. It simply shows the randomness of what atheists subscribe to. Atheists sound like everything can be scientifically explained. If that is so, why can't the scientists recreate a big bang? Science suddenly doesn't need believers, so why do atheists try to explain everything away with science? OK. I'm done. This whole atheism thing will never be convincing enough. What's the proof of atheism? Religious people have miracles but what do atheists have? Doubt in everything and not one bit of evidence. Atheism is too vague and has no evidence. But hey, it's a free world. You can believe that you don't believe in God or that you do believe in him. After all, we are all chasing illusions. |
Re: Why Do Atheists Attack Mostly Christians? by Tellemall: 7:43pm On Feb 24, 2016 |
cloudgoddess: According to you, faith is the absence of evidence. You believe the big bang occurred. It has no evidence. You've got faith in it. I will not be reading Hawking. Astrophysics has its relevance in CERN/NASA. Not to people who don't even use any form of an equation from year to year. Why always the fall back on science that is beyond non-physicists? To back up what? That same science cannot do the simplest thing it says is the most important thing to have occurred in the world of random molecular collisions. I do read on these things but you see, they start in the books and they end there. My disinterest in it had nothing to do with a lack of "education". Lol @ indoctrination. If I needed indoctrination the last place I'd get it is from religion. Religion indoctrinates no one. Only the weak will claim so. I dont mean to skew what you've got going on here. It's been nice talking cloudgoddess, but I've no interest in this. Not because you've thumped me, but because it's not going to convince me or make me think differently about anything mentioned here. |

Tellemall: Try and wrap your head around our solar system, the inherent energy in it. Now consider that our solar system is like a grain of sand on a beach when compared with the whole universe. There are over a billion Suns in the universe, just our sun can supply us with all the energy we need for 10billion years. Now how do you recreate the bang that expanded to form this universe, including the biillions of Suns, planets, moons in a lab, considering the amount of energy involved ? Tellemall: There is no central creed in atheism. For most atheists like myself, the primary reason I dismiss the existence of a God/Gods is that there is no evidence for any. Please note that atheism and science are not the same. Science is the systemic study of nature and atheism is a disbelief in gods and the supernatural. You don't need to be a scientist to be an atheist and I know alot Christians that are scientists. Don't conflate the two. It is rather unfortunate that religion and science disagree on so many issues. Tellemall: I don't mean to insult you but you are very ignorant about the big bang theory. The big bang theory does not address the origin of mankind, man evolved from a simple life form to a complex life form. The big bang theory attempts to explain the origin of the universe. The big bang theory also has not attempted to address the state of things before the bang. It simply states said that if the universe has always been expanding, it makes logical sense that it used to be a singularity. Do we know how the singularity that exploded came to be? No. Do we know how the simple life form that started the evolutionary process came to be? No But a lot of people are working hard to answer these questions, not disprove a God but to further human knowledge. The problem with religion is that it makes absurd claims with no proof which actually go against common sense and logic. Eg Creation story. Tellemall: You do not understand the big bang theory. Study it first then revert back to me. Tellemall: I cannot speak for every atheist but the reason I refer to science on the creation story is because it makes no sense whatsoever. Even as an igbo man, we have our own creation story like the Jews. Why should I believe the Jewish version over the Igbo version? Yet both makes no sense at all whatsoever, they are both ludicrous and absurd Tellemall: Atheism does not make any claim and therefore does not need to provide any evidence. The burden of proof is on the claimant. I hope this helps 1 Like |

GeneralShepherd: 1. You don't mean to insult me, but you do anyway. I'm not ignorant. I'm simply unmoved. 2. Atheism bases itself on scientific claims most of the time, and you know it does. How else to disprove religious people if not to go on about science and how it has evidence that religion doesn't have? I don't care how much energy is needed. If you say it happens then let it happen, PROVE IT. GIVE US THE EVIDENCE YOU ALWAYS DEMAND BEFORE YOU BELIEVE. Where the energy comes from, I can't care. Isn't science advanced enough? If it cannot be recreated then it cannot exist because that means it's a hypothesis and needs evidence to back it up. Surely science can come up with better than telling us everything was a singularity? Surely they can explain what happened to cause the expansion? Surely they know what particles were involved? CERN doesn't know and cannot recreate the particles? As far as I'm concerned, the big bang isn't a theory. I am very familiar with it but it's a far fetched imagination that thought it up. Show us a big bang and we shall believe. Pangea is easier to believe because plates are still in motion presently. 3. Atheism is believing there is no God. Isn't that belief? That was what cloudgoddess said, not me. She said faith is belief in the absence of evidence. 4. I won't respond to this anymore. The whole "educated" and "scientific" parts that seem to highlight perceived "ignorance" on my part are just tiring. Being so "knowledgeable" must be tiring too. Trying to believe there is no God takes one through the abstract world of physics and chemistry. We don't get to see subatomic particles on a daily basis... 5. Really, I'm done. 6. Smh. Everybody who doesn't believe in what you believe in must be "ignorant". Thanks. 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: Why Do Atheists Attack Mostly Christians? by GeneralShepherd(m): 10:12pm On Feb 24, 2016 |
Tellemall: Like I said, the reason I said you are ignorant on the big bang theory is because you said it addresses the origin of Man. It does not. I am certain you not unintelligent, all my friends are religious and they certainly are not ignorant or fools. Science does not claim to have all the answers. It simply asks the right questions and attempt to answer them. The reason I rejected the Christian religion is that it is based on the words of ancient cave men, not because of the big bang. Infact a lot of Christians believe that the big bang is not contradictory to the creation story but lends credence to it. Atheism is as much as a belief as abstinence is a sexual position. 2 Likes |

Tellemall:You know that the "replication" you keep speaking of is impossible. And such a thing is NOT necessary to prove the Big Bang, just like a real-time observation of a criminal act is not necessary for a detective team to deduce a criminal. We have EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE. If you don't know the meaning of that, here it is: "Empirical evidence" or "scientific evidence" is evidence which serves the purpose of either supporting or countering a scientific hypothesis or theory." I provided valid evidence supporting the Big Bang already and you completely ignored it. Atheism does not have the burden of proof. Atheism is the negative position ("a-" means lack of, "theism" means belief in a god), we aren't making ANY claims, other than the only one that would logically follow lack of proof of something. If someone came to you and said flying unicorns exist, would you believe them by default? Or would you ask them to state their proof? Until they provided proof that was valid, you would probably be a-unicornist. Every god hypothesis (yours and the 3,999 others) is exactly like a hypothesis proposing the existence of mythical creatures. People proposing that their specific God exists are the ones who need to present THEIR proof of why THEIR God exists. Until then, there is no reason for any logically thinking human being to accept any of them as true. That said, try to answer this. What is YOUR evidence that a human-like, ego-fueled, all-powerful being with emotions, created the universe by speaking it into existence, formed humans out of sand, caused childbirth to be painful because he was mad at Eve, etc. If such things were true, there would be signs. Where are those signs? Where is the evidence for your position? Why don't you present that evidence to your local research lab? You realize that if you provided such evidence, you would become world-renowned and transform the world of science, right? 4 Likes 1 Share |

Speechless3:Did this statement really make sense to you when you typed it out? Because it indicates so much bigotry, entitlement, and incomprehensible ignorance, that I can't fathom any educated adult typing such a thing. "Running to the lab" is exactly what made this computer you're using, the cellphone you own, the television you watch, the medicine that probably keeps you alive, and even the food you currently eat (almost all the foods we eat have been genetically engineered for taste, size, quantity, etc) possible. How about you try living without all the things science and rigorous inquiry (not prayer, the bible, or religion) gave you before you have the audacity to mock it? Go and live in the forest with only you and your bible and see how well you fare without people "running to the lab like crybabies". Seriously sickening to read. This is a perfect example of what religion does to people; the part of your brain meant for logical thought has effectively been turned off -- making you the perfect pawn for greedy pastors to feed off of. Your ignorance lines their pocketbooks and keeps Nigeria in the dark ages while secular societies are soaring. You and Tellemall are some of the most textbook-worthy cases of the Dunning-Kruger effect I've seen recently on these forums (not that you likely know what that means either). cloudgoddess: Who cares what it means? You think you're smart because you think nobody knows that effect? Typical behavior of one who professes to be an atheist. Everybody is educated but not everybody is an autistic individual whose world circles around theism and it's demerits. When i need to work as a physicist/astrophysicist/mathematician i will make sure to. I'm not interested in all your astronomical/scientific/atheistic babble. It doesn't move me. Nobody cares. The abstract world is for those who wish to walk it. Walk your walk. I'm surprised days later you remember to call me up. I told you it's over days ago: You keep your belief, I keep mine. You're happy, I'm happy. You're a stubborn atheist, I'm a stubborn theist. No need to keep bringing people who are tired of the discussion up with a long sermon. You're a case yourself, in case you didn't know. You validate science without evidence. And you still don't have the evidence. You make up excuses for science. Later you need to Mention me when I'm just not interested. I pity you. Can you just leave it as it is? The whole case-closed, don't-mention-me-again thing? We'd all appreciate it. Thanks. PS. The problem with atheists is that they feel theists are dumb. The Greeks who invented formulas, the Egyptians, all those people who made a touch in discovering the secrets of the world, most of them were theists. It's so irritating to see people who think because they are educated (like everyone else) that religion is too silly to comprehend. That education automatically means a disbelief in a supreme being, because educated people cannot possibly believe in such. Uhm... It's called your right to a choice or opinion. You're so smart you deduced there is no supreme being, but you can't explain from your education how you came to be? Many dark zones you hope that further science will uncover? How sure are you of what you know then? And that's the reason why atheists don't move me. In all conversations so far I've observed: * If atheists aren't trying to belittle theists they are trying to convince themselves that they are so correct. *The theists are always the bigots to atheists. *The theists are always uneducated to the atheists. *There can never be an argument that has atheists not trying to sound like theists are uneducated. * They assume you don't have "logic", are backward etc etc. This always happens. I'm sure at the end of the day theist IQs may be higher *Atheists believe in evidence only when it serves their purposes of discrediting theists . * It appears that all atheists do is study the new disbelief of another and try to believe it themselves. Once you don't agree with an atheist they assume you don't know anything, the bigots. There are illiterates who are atheists, so you few who happen to have read up on some effects etc shouldn't feel like the world will crumble at your feet. It just never will. That aside, no great argument or belittling by any individual will make me feel like they are correct. It only helps me feel they are stvpid instead. OK. Rant ends. Really, it's over. Really. 1 Like |

onetrack: No Speechless3 is right. Atheists - especially in the west - do tend to concentrate exclusively on Christianity and often appear to give other religions a free pass. If you listen to the public speeches of Richard Dawkins during the past decade, and if you read his book The God Delusion, his blows are largely if not exclusively directed at Christianity and Christians in particular (even the old testament Judaic text is attacked only in the context of it being part of the Christian bible). While this may be easily explained by the fact that Christianity is the religion that has traditionally dominated western culture and thus is the one western atheists are most likely to attack, it doesn't explain the relative apathy they often seem to display towards other religions even when they are prominent in public consciousness and even when they are characterized by violent extremism. Islam is the most obvious example. Many Christians have pointed out that secular liberals in the west are often extremely tolerant and even protective of Islam and tend to excuse Muslims of behaviors that they would attack Christians for if they were the ones doing it. These are legitimate complaints that even atheists like Richard Dawkins have recognized: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a7igsWpPSQ. By the way, it is also true that atheists do often attack Christians (not just Christianity) as being "stu.pid", "du.mb", "mentally ill" etc etc... |

Re: Why Do Atheists Attack Mostly Christians? by CoolUsername: 8:43am On Feb 28, 2016 |
misterbear: Richard Dawkins' behaviour is not always worthy of emulation. But I we should try to see why it's Christianity he attacks mostly. First, it is Christians who are trying to stop schools from teaching evolution and the Big Bang Theory, as a man of science, he has the rights to be peeved. Secondly, the Christian right, is strongly against equality in marriages. Third, it is the Christians who are against planned parenthood. Fourth, the Catholic church opposes stem cell research. His attitude towards Christians, while not ideal is mostly a function of the tendency of Christians to try to enforce their beliefs over others in a democratic government. |
Re: Why Do Atheists Attack Mostly Christians? by misterbear: 8:55am On Feb 28, 2016 |
CoolUsername: The third and fourth points are correct: It is Christians that tend to be opposed to stem cell research and abortion. Those things do not contravene Islamic doctrine. As for the other points: being against equality in marriage and imposing your beliefs on others; other religions particularly Islam are guilty of that as well. In fact, Islamic culture is guilty of these things in some ways even more than Christian culture is (especially in the west). Nevertheless, as a man of science, it is to be expected that Dawkins would be particularly focused on those areas where science is threatened especially in his own part of the world. (Note that Muslims also tend to be opposed to evolution.) |

However I look at a number of atheist facebook pages (i.e. Atheist Republic and others) and there is plenty of criticism of Islam.
