Nokia or Microsoft Lumia that uses windows phone operating systems 8 or 10 are not affected. If yours uses 7.1 you can upgrade to 10.

Has nothing to do with what they think of Asia or Africa. WhatsApp makes 95% of its revenue from Android, iOS and the new windows systems so it makes very good business sense.

It's a matter of when not if those smaller OS will stop being supported even by the companies who developed them e.g. BlackBerry has started making Android phones and will probably stop supporting BlackBerry systems at some point.

If you look at attached pic, you will see that the market share of the non top 3 system have been falling and is very very small now so they will not b losing much.

To get market share a messaging app needs be cross platform. BBM has done that. If whatsapp want to cut out certain platforms they will reduce their market share but even more importantly it shows exactly what they think of Africa and parts of Asia. Which is, not a lot. Mistake.

I don't think BlackBerry 10 phones on the latest OS will be affected that much. since the phone is a android hybrid it will still accept the apk version of whatsapp and work excellently.

While I agree many people in the countries you listed will be affected, over time they will migrate to cheaper android phones very easily.

You mentioned a rival company coming in but ignored the fact developers are no longer willing to develop apps for smaller operating systems.

We had this issue even with BB10 where many developers refused to develop apps for the system because their market share is just too small. Android, iOS and Windows make up about 95% of market share now so no incentive to develop apps for smaller ecosystems. Without apps I don't see any rival OS taking market share.

I thought this was a spurious post but after researching online, the news is actually true.
I think it is a bad and ludicrous decision to discontinue whatsapp for many low-end devices. Many people in Indonesia, Nigeria and other parts of Asia use blackberry and low-end phones. Many people in various countries cannot afford to upgrade. Discontinuing whatsapp for these devices will drastically reduce the whatsapp userbase and inconvenience existing users in the aforementioned countries. It also proves that Whatsapp's objective to connect people all over the world is nothing but a bloody lie. I love it when people and companies self-sabotage their own success by themselves e.g P-Square and now whatsapp. Goodluck battling a rival company that will emerge to acquire the abandoned users.

Man Android users downloaded the BBM and to God we didn't enjoy it..I am limited on contact because of bb pin..

unlike whatsapp all phone numbers are my contact once I have whatsapp...

It doesn't mean Whatsapp will stop working on those devices, it only means there will be no more updates or technical supports. Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows XP and would stop supporting Windows Vista at the end of this year.

The Nokia S40 discontinuation will deeply affect developing countries like Nigeria because most people still uses old Nokia phone. It's a very bad move. I think Facebook bought Whatsapp just to kill it, as it was making Facebook obsolete. This Will Make It Stop Growing.

Then Facebook will soon introduce a Whatsapp like feature to try and take its market.

That may be tru. But Facebook used a huge chunk of its stock to pay for whatapp. They paid only $8bln cash or thereabout and the balance with about $11bln worth fb stock. can Zuckerberg throw $19bln away to kill competition?

I think what the owners of WhatsApp are trying to do is to cut off every device that uses backdoor to access the app. I guess they now want us to strictly pay for the app as it wud be impossible to use a back door and wud be monitored. Funny thing is if this method proves successful other technocrats wud start applying it.

How is it cheating if I may ask and who are we cheating? Take for instance, I bought and SD card from u and its capacity is 2gig and I have a software that can boost same sd card to 4gig. After upgrading said sd card, would you say I cheated you?
