well first you got to have the blue print of the existing building, if you do not have the hard copy you got to let ur builder/Arch do a sight survey ,hey can deduce the layout of the structure you got on ground, he can delete and create partitions to be dug and you are good to go

I am not one of those "men that like to put down men"........... or put them under a different/higher standard of judgement because l support "Gender Equality" while recognizing the "uniqueness and complementarity" of both Gender!

*Did you not see the "MAN" in that same picture, holding a Shovel?

Why then did you not use that Man in your example, instead of impugning the "picture" of an irresponsible man in your comparison above?

*Have you not seen or heard of men who do two or three jobs everyday, just to put food on the table and ensure their wife and kids enjoy he good things of life?

*Have you not heard the fable about "Where are the Baba Landlord" (When a prospective tenant in Edo wants to rent a house and all he sees on the streets are "Mama landlady" so much so he was forced to ask that question! The reality being that the "MEN" who laboured so hard to acquire these properties have all long died of "over-work"! undecided

*Are you not aware that statistically, despite not carrying pregnancy nor doing monthly periods, MEN DIE EARLIER THAN WOMEN.... all oveer the world?
Have you sat down and pondered over what is responsible for these perenial "shorter-life span" in men ..... if not Over work and the stress/worry of how their family will not only survive but also live above 'basic means'?

*Have you even wondered why "Chekitaut" (the poster) himself, runs around at the back of 30Ton trucks in the middle of the night, trying to deliver to customers, growing "grey hairs" when he is yet to reach 45yrs of age? grin grin shocked shocked
Does that portray a picture of "lazy and irresponsible men" that most people try to paint, while "comparatively" eulogizing a women?

I have seen and heard of many men who put their life on the line (for example when Arm Robbers come knocking on the door!) ...just to protect their women! Many actualy died in t he process.
God forbid, if thieves force their way into your house at night, would you lock your wife and children up in the safest room in the house while you "involuntarily appear" (who wants to die? ) before them....... or would you lock yourself and your children up in that same safest room while you ask your wife to go and appear before them, on your behalf? Yea, think about that for a moment.

Now, dont get me wrong, there are very hard-working women out there, women who are even the envy of men (like gabby-tabby), women who deserve a standing ovation. ..... what l am saying is there are also men, like most men, who daily sacrifice and reduce their life span, just for the sake of their wife and children. We should always recognize their efforts and not take it for granted.

At the end of the day, l believe in the "complementarity and use of camparative advantage" of Husband and wife, in a family: You do what a woman can do best (than her husband) while the husband does what a man can do best (than his wife), for the benefit of both spouse and children of the family.
That way, "Efforts and Resources" are not duplicated, mis-directed and wasted

My ten cents.

How long does it take for corrugated steel roofing to rust and what can be done to prevent and/or prolong the time before it fully sets in?

Are there alternative material that look like this but last longer and maybe have thermal resistance built in?

Thanks.

What's that non sand filled area of your foundation? If I can remember, you said somewhere that your floor plan includes a "courtyard" or something. Is that the courtyard? Again if I can remember you also talked about an area in your building where you can come out at night to the sky and on a moonlit night but feel secure....Right? So is it like a panic area as in panic room?

What's the roof design for the mentioned area? Are you going to roof the area inline with the entire building or you are not going to roof it to access the sky at night and day? These questions throw a lot of implications and challenges that need careful thought and planning:

If the area is an island courtyard with no roof, did you include in your foundation water drainage from the area? What happens during the rainy seasons? Water accumulates in the void and sip into your foundation if there are no drains. Your foundation will be near permanently wet. A constantly wet foundation is a serious cause for concern. There is also the potential of algae growth on the walls.

If you are going to roof the area, it means the area will be constantly dark, dank and damp without natural sunlight and air circulation. And why did you elect not to sand fill the area? Even if it's a courtyard it has to be at same level with the rest of the house so one does not come out into a "hole".

Absolutely wonderful questions and thought provoking. I'm elated that you took the time to check this out, thanks.

The courtyard will not have a roof over it at all but will have a curved stainless steel open grid cover that has 12X12 holes. It will have maximum opening without allowing anyone to pass through.

The roof will be a combination 4 sided hip roof, with little overhangs.

The courtyard will be indeed be at the same level as the house and with plumbing.

There will be laterite filling to the german floor level (after the german floor is poured - as I'm pacing myself financially until I get home in two weeks). The remaining 4 inches will be taken up by fine sand.

I am waiting to get home to work hand in hand with a plumber to make sure that the plumbing is exact to my standard (quality of material as well as grade, direction of travel and exit point).

Additionally the roof edge in the courtyard area will also have rain gutters all the way around so the only water will be the direct rainfall. It is intended for the courtyard to be dry as a baby butt. The two or three trees in there will also soak up moisture like a vampire sucking blood..

There's a separate safe room in the building with a hidden external door.

Thank you.

PS: The garage depicted has since been abandoned due to the height of the foundation and has turned into a guest suite and expanded the existing multi purpose playroom.

The dimensions of the courtyard and the hight of the roof may not allow enough air into that space. Their is a formula to calculate wind speed into an open courtyard.

The root of the tree in the courtyard may also affects your foundation (depending on the type of tree though). Soaking off moisture from a cohesive soil leads to contraction in expansive clay.

The roof drain will have to be taken down and drain out of the building either through an open drain that will go through one side of the house or through an underground circular pvc pipe ( the open drain is preferable because of mentainace and possible blockage).

Did you say steel? Any material made with iron that is exposed to both oxygen and water will rust. The only way to slow it down is to not expose it to oxygen and water which is impossible for a roofing sheet. Some steel roofing sheets like Sumo 8ft coat the outer exposed part of the sheet with Al oxide to delay the onset of rust. No matter how you do it, steel must rust. Pipes may be protected using Oxide paints.

Good observation.

Ring beam is not a necessity for this accessory structure.

The main and bigger building will have a ring beam.

PS: in fact I consider the little lintel you see as a personal failure of mine.

In 2016 I should have made those out of wood or light aluminum instead of heavy concrete mix.

Basically if you have enough land and if you're able to then design your new foundation to be bigger than the existing one.

So let's say the existing foundation is 35 feet by 60 feet, then the new foundation can be 50 feet by 80 feet.

Personally I would just knock it all down and use the materials as fill for the new foundation.

Listen, day laborers are at most N2,500 per day, hire 10 = N25,000 for maybe 3 days = N75,000 and Bobs your Uncle. Maybe buy them some well made sledgehammers and good pneumatic tire wheelbarrow.

From what u can see here o, I don't think you have a sloping site. Most of the fillings are above natural ground level.

I do indeed have a sloping site. I'll measure the grade later.

The foundation on the upper level is one block above natural ground and 6 or 7 above ground level on the other side.

I chose the site specifically for this grade due to the sweeping views that it offers.
