Guy im sure u have heard about maslows hierarchy of needs. Starting out yea money is the driving force for motivation but there comes time when other things will be far more important than money. You will get there pretty soon. Besides we r all wired differently. Some people don't need to earn so much to feel satisfied in life while some will gather the whole world and still they feel empty inside.

You can tell someone that has passion for this job; they exude it easily. This guy is a paragon of that passion. It's just a comic irony that NLNG has forced him to express that passion by criticising them on nairaland instead of using it in the company where it is better suited. NLNG, just look at what you've done.

I don't think anyone prefers working without earning much. The fact that one would say money isn't the primary reason for getting up in the morning shouldn't really be interpreted to mean he would settle for meagre pay for his/her work (no one does that). That's totally inaccurate.
Maybe it could be near the mark in Nigeria where the slave mentality is still paramount, (I say slave mentality in the sense that the employer kinda treats the employee like he owns his/her soul) money could be the all in all in such situations but that kinda explains a lot of the wrongs that go on in Nigeria.

The employer knows the employee works simply for the pay and cannot wait to clock out each day so he stifles payday looking for new ways to screw the employee over cos the employee subconsciously doesn't see his/herself-worth in terms of ability/input but in terms of money and sees his/her employer as the fountain where the money comes from instead of vice versa; so as a result having the self confidence to stand one's ground in the professional setting is as probable as getting struck by lightning three times in one day and at three different places, the self confidence to improve on one's ability isn't thr cos the employer swindles 1 time and again so as to keep one in a state of dependence (slave). We only see few cases where some breakout.
Even in companies like Sch...., Hall..., Exx.. as Nigerians you all earn nowhere near what an American working for the same company in America earns, it's only in NLNG that i observed that Nigerians there earn very close to the industry's average (note the average?).


That said, back then I knew Shell guys that basically live on their salaries month after month, these are sophomore guys that were earning at least 1.5m basic salary, the only investing some do is the monthly contribution to their pension which basically bears no fruit when compared to say a money-market fund-mutual fund, some do the fixed deposit thing at the bank but is that really investing? So the over-qualified guy earning peanuts lives paycheck to paycheck, the qualified guy earning major money (in his mind's eye o) also lives from paycheck to paycheck with little plans of investing.
Both have the mindset tht money is everything, both do next to nothing to keep the fountain flowing for that which they see as "everything".

I watched a TED talk recently about motivation and what you said is truly spot on, if i remember correctly, the guy closed with the example of Microsoft's Encarta that employed thousands of experts and professionals to give content to that software, and Wikipedia which basically curates what it's given free of charge and even sometimes relies on donations to stay up.
Today Wikipedia has totally eclipsed Encarta (which is basically a discontinued software).
So if the money as a motivation argument was so solid how come it didn't work there, where the same experts and pros moved from Encarta that paid them for content to Wikipedia that takes money from them in the form of donations to the platform, you know?

That's a very good example to buttress my point. Money is good...we all love it but it sure won't give you satisfaction on any job.

Well observed. And we have dozens more like this being put in the limbo, what I don't know is how long one can hang on to it in the face of this unpleasant circumstance. This fire has been burning for almost quarter of a dozen years now, with only the news of 'still in the race' fueling it. How long will that last?

Truth is more than 80% of us left will jump at this jab when it finally lands; the Super-employed, gainfully employed, just-employed, under-employed and of course the unemployed ones. But will the jumping be induced by the more important reasons other than the 'kishi'.?

The long 'unexplained' delay might have made business sense, but I doubt if it's taking a good toll on the psychology/mental disposition on the 'soon to be' employed 'future of the company'. I can only hope the well crafted induction/orientation programs will be able to effectively right the wrongs to a safe state.

I'm with you on this money ish. Were I work I'm practically on shift 24/7. I've been woken up in the dead of the night to resolve an issue. I've been at the airport seeing my parents off while on a 4 hour call resolving an issue.(my mum, bless her soul, was compelled to drag the phone from my ears and terminate the calls). I've been under the highest pressure of my life with emails flying from Zurich to the US that my operations were delaying a multinational from meeting their monthly target. So yes I have got some of the most brutal experience but no shish. That money IS imporrant

Despite everything nlng has been doing as regards graduate recruitment, everyone has been so clingy. .. . They say it's not about the money, then about what? Or is it only nlng that can give job satisfaction in Nigeria, career growth, experience, chance to impact the world ...etcc?
Everyone desires better reward for work done/input made!

Even nlng is in business to make profit/money and they're so popular today because they make so much money!
As an employee, if you can't impact positively on their revenue, you're as good as gone!
Many influential people we know today is because of how much they're worth..
Can you even impact the world without finance?

One thing is: offer quality services to the public while making your money, that's all...
And it's best that what you do to make money be what you love so that it doesn't come off as stress!

Haba mana, e be like say we wan muddle this thing up. Money is very important, but it is not everything. Over 70% of those waiting in due course, will earn or make 2-5 million dollars over the next 10 years with a few outliers. So whether or whethern't NLNG, the pepper go still rest. Now if the money is ALL you get over the course of your productive career, WHAT IS NOW YOUR LEGACY?.

I know the story of a woman who's single dream was to own a regular Benz, she achieved that by age 40 and fell into a cruise control. She did not expand her business, she did not expand her knowledge, even though she had the capacity to do so. She was satisfied as she had achieved her dream. Can you draw parallels yet?
Money is very important, it's usually a measure of value placed on you, but is not everything.

As a caveat, for some; they need the money to pursue their long held dreams ( being a CEO), for them the speed of amassing the money is even more important. All the best to us all. May we smile on our death beds, knowing we lived the life we wanted, by the ultimate grace of God.

No need to drag. My current salary doesn't motivate me. I'm still at the base of maslow's hierarchy. I'm barely subsisting. I do have grand plans to influence my profession.
