pappyyanky: The reality is you should still take the SAT because when you get to school you will still be required to take a state based exam, for them to know you have the adequate skills or knowledge to be in college. You might have to take developmental classes and pay extra cash for no reason if you do not pass the exam. So the SAT would ease you from writing those exams, putting you in the place of college level or higher. For example math; when you have an SAT score that is high enough, you skip two or three math classes, and puts you in Calculus 1 straight up (But when you fail to take the SAT and you do not pass the state based exam for UG, you will have to start from the lowest form of math class). It is also good for the embassy, if you want to be portrayed as a potential student, take at least one standardized test. It would increase your chances of getting a visa 1 Like |

ukemnseg: Boy! you are hot as they come. But MIT and Harvard are no joke. The competition is really high. Some indians and chinese are crazily hot. But I believe you stand a chance if few Africans applied to your course. Ivy leagues aim to diversify your class. Funding is almost guaranteed for anyone that gets admitted! If I were you I would apply to some three to five more schools. Just email the school with your score and ask them to grant you waiver as you are coming from developing country. Your teacher can support with a letter too. YOU should try Pennsylvania, Cornell, Stanford and two mid schools like Notre dame and my school- University of Missouri. As per your question, you stand a very huge chance of getting visa with ivy leagues. They are always impressed to see ivy leagues whether they show the emotion or not. This comes with huge responsibility. They won't expect you to flop when they ask you the few questions in their mind. I do not expect you to flop as an intelligent guy. See? if you flopped, you don't deserve visa |

ukemnseg: Hello, Apply to three ivy league schools Three "New ivies" Stanford, Emory, Duke etc Apply to two safety schools that will surely give you full scholarship. Chinese and Indians will apply but guess what they have to be diverse in their admissions decisions so since you're black and you are clearly very bright, you stand a very good chance of getting in. Hopefully, other aspects of your application stand out as well. Goodluck. It's worth the shot. Why are you thinking of a visa now? Get admission first. 1 Like |

Mayflowa: And you guys will be saying funding are available at those kind of schools like it's easy. You forget about how extremely competitive it is to get ordinary admission, let alone funding. Harvard, I know of very well. Their admission doesn't come with any automatic funding. Harvard will tap fingers to collect their money in full from you. My wife is a graduate of Harvard University, her student loan is super high. 1 Like 1 Share |

imperiouxx: For real yo, ivy league schools are very very stingy with funds. In fact, most top schools are stingy with funds. |
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 8 by Mayflowa(m): 6:58am On Mar 06, 2016 |
imperiouxx: It's possible you may not get funding at the beginning. But there are tones of scholarship to apply to once in. However, you won't be deny enrolment in Harvard because of fund. Worse, you will be given loan. The endowment allows every admitted student to enrol. I wonder why your wife is not in Nigeria. She would have paid her loan in two years. Harvard graduates are rare in Nigeria. After my PhD now, Harvard is my direction though I will be taking class in Jf Kennedy School of Government. I will need your input then. 2 Likes |

bbdd: Thanks. This may sound weird, but I only applied to MIT, Harvard and Howard. I'm already attending the University of Lagos (got admitted last year to study EEE) and I only did the SATs in November/December last year because a couple of friends convinced me to prepare/take it with them. Then my scores came in, and Harvard and a couple of other schools started sending me emails encouraging me to apply. The thing is, I'm trying not to get too carried away by all of this so my academics in Unilag don't get affected. If I focus on applying to too many schools, I might lose touch with my studies here and I'd rather not have that happen (especially as there's no real guarantee of admission). I don't want to lose both ways. I actually wasn't thinking about a visa until I saw this thread. I might be writing tests/exams here in Unilag around the time admissions decisions are mailed so I might not have the time to make the runs for my visa application (if I do get admitted). More so, after reading about the experiences of others, I think I want to start preparing early. |
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 8 by ukemnseg(m): 9:25am On Mar 06, 2016 |
imperiouxx: Yeah. I know Harvard and most of the other Ivies only award aid based on the student's 'perceived' need...and I know they still expect the student to make a contribution ($3000 annually for Harvard) by either taking a loan or participating in a work/study program. But you have to agree that for the post-graduation prospects they offer, they're not really asking for that much. 2 Likes |

Mekurexx:Living in LA is expensive, it is one of the most expensive cities to live in In California. Budget around $1K monthly for rent, bills, food, transportation and miscellaneous expenses. Except you want to live in the ghetto, which I don't advise. Your best bet will be to share a room with other students. Make sure to go for orientation and you might meet people who will be looking for roommates. Be prepared to stay in an hotel for a few days pending when you will get a room to move into. Bear in mind that graduate assistantship positions is almost nonexistent in Cal State Universities, except you get an instructor who needs a research assistant and those are few and far in between. If you wanna come to Cali for school, please hold plenty money. I'm honestly not kidding. I swear. All the best. 1 Like |

Hello house , SAT or TOEFL which one should I take , or is the two compulsory . |
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 8 by ukemnseg(m): 11:57am On Mar 06, 2016 |
pappyyanky: I've taken the SAT and I've looked at some questions from the TOEFL so I'll answer based on the quality/difficulty of both tests. Your understanding of written English must be quite good if you want to do really well on either test. If you're reasonably proficient at math and are willing to put in a good amount of study time, then you should do the SAT (it's the more difficult test and is more highly regarded). If you don't plan to give too much time to studying and would rather avoid math, then take the TOEFL. The final decision is yours to make. How far are you willing to go...what do you want to achieve? 1 Like |

Mayflowa: Federal subsidized loan is impossible for int'l student and Sallie Mae has stringent requirement such as a creditworthy resident or citizen cosigner. Those schools give some kind of highly competitive funding but not like those given in the other group of schools. So students go for private loans or out of pocket payment. At the bold, we've discussed this but it holds no water because 1. She's still doing her doctorate 2. Clinical psychology is not a field that works in Nigeria 3. She's always believe she can't acclimatize in Nigeria. |
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 8 by bbdd: 5:34pm On Mar 06, 2016 |
Mayflowa: Enrollment and admission are two different things. Let's put things into perspective, you can be admitted and told to take a $100,000 loan. Would you still enroll with a $100,000 burden on your head? Theory about endowmentis still theory. We all know pubic schools are more generous despite having less endowment. AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO GUARANTEE YOU'LL GET FUNDING AT HARVARD ONCE YOU'RE IN. Heck it's very unlikely. Millions of Americans take huge loans to go to those schools. Also, a degree from Harvard won't give you a green card. You still need to hustle for h1b like someone from any other school. If you're admitted by Harvard and asked to take a loan of $100,000, do you expect a guy from a middle class family in Lagos to be unreasonable enough to do that? Just because he wants to go to Harvard? I have friends that went to HSPH(Harvard school of public health) Their parents are very wealthy. It is not for the average guy. Endowment or no endowment. |

bbdd: I get your point. Many candidates get into Harvard already armed with scholarship. Very few seek internal funding. More so, the STEM courses have more funding opportunities! This boy we refer to is going for one of the STEM courses most probably Engineering. He was begged to apply! I am a lecturer, I have medium scale GRE coaching centre. I have mentored good students into ivy leagues. They all went with scholarships. If I am faced with taking 100k loans for Harvard, I will take it up. Harvard may not mean much in US. It does anyway! But you are distinct graduate in Nigeria. Imperiouxx wife knows this is true except she is a US citizen. I tell you, u can have huge return for value if u did go to harvard. Let's clarify this: US citizens first choice of college funding is federal loan. For this, other choices somehow elude them. Whether they go to ivy league or Valparaiso, they are still burden with education loan for years to come. Funding situation is somewhat different for foreigners. Anyone with admission should never chicken out. Update: just saw what bro imperiouxx wrote now. Makes more sense now. I learn here everyday. Imperiouxx... You know I like you, don't you? Can't blame your wife. I too found it difficult to acclimatize here. I almost ported to texas. 1 Like |

bbdd: Wifey did her BS in Benard College (the same school picked by Obama's daughter) fully funded, she got to Harvard to accrue huge student loan. How it happened I still dont understand because as an int'l student I got instate and biweekly stipend in my just an ordinary school. Though degree from Harvard is a great recommendation for her but she still has to go through interviews. 1 Like |

cseejhay: There's a new redesigned SAT now (from March 2016), so you may have to do a little more research to prepare. I'd suggest you use the Khan Academy test prep: https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/new-sat You should also read up the posts on Prepscholar (I found them quite useful): http://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/resources Buy a SAT prep/study book (Kaplan or Barron's will do) Finally, here's a link to the four official practice tests I used to prepare (for the old SAT): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pk1rlgyix0g6f1j/AAA1gcLa5C5PpxzdfmWArQAAa?dl=0 All of the best! 1 Like |
