Yeah. I know Harvard and most of the other Ivies only award aid based on the student's 'perceived' need...and I know they still expect the student to make a contribution ($3000 annually for Harvard) by either taking a loan or participating in a work/study program. But you have to agree that for the post-graduation prospects they offer, they're not really asking for that much.

There are limitations for int'l students. You just have to do your research well. If you tslking about intl student, you can't get work study. Though you can file hardship with USCIS and be allowed to work. For loans you have to have someone dependable in US or you bring your loan from Nigeria if possible.

I get your point. Many candidates get into Harvard already armed with scholarship. Very few seek internal funding. More so, the STEM courses have more funding opportunities! This boy we refer to is going for one of the STEM courses most probably Engineering. He was begged to apply!

I am a lecturer, I have medium scale GRE coaching centre. I have mentored good students into ivy leagues. They all went with scholarships.

If I am faced with taking 100k loans for Harvard, I will take it up. Harvard may not mean much in US. It does anyway! But you are distinct graduate in Nigeria. Imperiouxx wife knows this is true except she is a US citizen. I tell you, u can have huge return for value if u did go to harvard.

Let's clarify this: US citizens first choice of college funding is federal loan. For this, other choices somehow elude them. Whether they go to ivy league or Valparaiso, they are still burden with education loan for years to come. Funding situation is somewhat different for foreigners. Anyone with admission should never chicken out.

Update: just saw what bro imperiouxx wrote now. Makes more sense now. I learn here everyday. Imperiouxx... You know I like you, don't you?

Can't blame your wife. I too found it difficult to acclimatize here. I almost ported to texas.

Well said. When asked why that school, answer is it's for networking. Once one gets such admission, I think the next is to go get loans just like how they run medical programs.

Yeah.
I know international students are not eligible for the 'Federal' Work/Study program and are not allowed to take off-campus jobs. However, I also know that students with F-1 visas are allowed to work 'on-campus' and there are quite a number of such opportunities available at Harvard.
Thanks for the advice though. If I really do need to take a loan, I'll explore the options here in Nigeria before considering the US. Of course, all this is hinged upon the financial aid offer I'm given (if I get admitted).

There's a new redesigned SAT now (from March 2016), so you may have to do a little more research to prepare.

I'd suggest you use the Khan Academy test prep:
https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/new-sat

You should also read up the posts on Prepscholar (I found them quite useful):
http://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/resources

Buy a SAT prep/study book (Kaplan or Barron's will do)

Finally, here's a link to the four official practice tests I used to prepare (for the old SAT):
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pk1rlgyix0g6f1j/AAA1gcLa5C5PpxzdfmWArQAAa?dl=0

All of the best!

thank you sir.....plenty.i will play around those links asap.can i send you a PM for further assistance?

Wifey did her BS in Benard College (the same school picked by Obama's daughter) fully funded, she got to Harvard to accrue huge student loan. How it happened I still dont understand because as an int'l student I got instate and biweekly stipend in my just an ordinary school. Though degree from Harvard is a great recommendation for her but she still has to go through interviews.
They get internship spot faster. When they apply for jobs, the internships they've had in those great firms usually boost their chances as well. But those student loans dey scare me especially those that take thousands to study history or liberal art. If I'm taking such loans it has to be a competitive program.

I don't know too much about scholarships but if you want to be taken really seriously, you should take the SAT I and at least two subject tests (SAT II)...and do well on them all. I know you can find a couple of schools that offer scholarships based on SAT scores. You just have to do some research.

Which public university are you considering? Look up the school's website and you'll find info. regarding what standardized tests to take to be eligible for admission. Most schools require just the SAT I, but top schools will also recommend that you take two SAT II subject tests as well.

I did well on the SAT, but I still got an email from Howard University yesterday asking that I submit my TOEFL scores. So yeah, some schools may still require you to take the TOEFL after the SAT.

All of the best!

Try and take the TOEFL exam and apply to other schools. Duke is a very good school as well. They might waive application fee for you.

I can take such loan for a very lucrative course. Do you know that there is student loan forgiveness for some professions?

So I heard, but I've not bothered to research about it. The loans are good, but for me to apply for such, it has to be for a lucrative course. A friend at Duke studying computer science got internship at coursera, IBM and Google. The school earns them fast internships.

If you're in the US, just go to Canada or Mexico if you don't wanna make the trip back.

Any graduate from any good school can get internships and jobs at top companies provided they have the skills and are smart about the application process...talking about Engineering courses now..don't know about other areas. Student loans are lot more headache than people think-and with all the interest.

Of course, but you can't compare such chances with an ivy league student.

Thank You....I'm looking at accommodation around d school (san gabriel, alhambra, pasadena etc). Its a gud one to chill till orientation but I think its risky, and put me under pressure. My going there is dependent on some factors but because one cant defer the admission, I gotta work with it. Can I submit bank statement for I-20 but not request for it yet? I am waiting for oda decisions and also if I divinely get d full tuition waiver, then I might go to Cal state, cuz the course is hotcake
MsNas:

Living in LA is expensive, it is one of the most expensive cities to live in In California. Budget around $1K monthly for rent, bills, food, transportation and miscellaneous expenses. Except you want to live in the ghetto, which I don't advise. Your best bet will be to share a room with other students. Make sure to go for orientation and you might meet people who will be looking for roommates. Be prepared to stay in an hotel for a few days pending when you will get a room to move into.

Bear in mind that graduate assistantship positions is almost nonexistent in Cal State Universities, except you get an instructor who needs a research assistant and those are few and far in between. If you wanna come to Cali for school, please hold plenty money. I'm honestly not kidding. I swear. All the best.

As much as standardized tests signifies one as a serious student, SOP does wonders & magic. Lol I hear people get funding $15k+ above just by writing sweet SOP. Thats what also helped me I guess with my admission, cuz I had to write 3 essays. I am still looking to improve cuz I really admire the ''change'' and development a serious Nigerian student writes (especially essay) when they get in the US educational system. Nice week ahead folks!
