NAIRALAND JOB MOTIVATION SPECTRUM THEOREM- Make una see wetin NLNG wait don cause! ROTFL!!!! Let's first of all start by appreciating people's complexities and diversities. I would like us to see our motivations for the job as a spectrum with two extremes. On one end we have financial motivations scoring 1 and Non-financial scoring a 10 and vice-versa on the other end. Few of us are on the extremes of the spectrum, but most of us are somewhere in between the extremes. Financial reasons are fairly straight forward but non-financial reasons can be very complicated. For instance, someone who is the first child in a family of 10, may not think twice about loyalty when a job with better financial package comes calling while a last child with elder ones doing well and who has no pressure or burden placed on him may stick with a less paying job due to exposure, opportunities and career prospects. Case study: Some of us here, no disrespect meant please o ehen. Some people believe no man can pay them enough for their time, and look for jobs that give them as much time as they can get to mentor their kids and be a husband who is always around and they therefore avoid offshore jobs like a plague while others are dying to get the same. Case study: Tevez. Sorry to the non-football fans. He was a player who money really meant nothing to. Others want to just avoid a crazy boss, who is making life unbearable while some just want to save enough to achieve their dreams of becoming an entrepreneur- to them NLNG is only a positive catalyst. Case study: Some of us here. And I can go on and on. Even inside NLNG, I believe their staff's motives for staying with them will be very diverse if only we can get a honest feedback from them but no matter what there must be a little element of financial reason. Otherwise, how else would we explain the low staff turnover in most well paying companies? Even Professors in Universities no wan gree retire! I hear also that only few of the last 2007 GTs have left. So it looks like irrespective of what anyone wants us to believe, the level of pay is inversely proportional to the level of staff turnover whether there are career prospects or not. This proves that money means something to most people. There may be few on the extremes, but most people lie somewhere along the spectrum. I am tempted to say no one lies outside the spectrum. I com remember my University IT say dem no pay me and I been work well because I need A for the program. Looolz but these are just exceptions sha. 4 Likes |

freeradical:Very nice points. . Nobody is saying money is the ONLY driving factor.. Want to ask you something. . You said you can move to a company that pays you 50% of what you currently earn.. not just by saying it, sincerely tell us how many times you've applied and followed up with such companies? Then, what makes a 'good ' company and what do you classify as a 'better' alternative? How do know nlng is a better company when you haven't tasted the waters? If nlng doesn't have money and consequently unpopular, would you still classify them as a good company? What convinces you that you would hv career fulfillment there even though you haven't worked with them? How did you know they would be better than your current place of work, therefore tendering your application? Also, why did you classify going to Saudi as an alternative to nlng? Why not some other smaller companies? Or such companies don't offer career fulfillment? Why do openings in 'big companies' attract bigger population and competition? Na only them dey give 'job satisfaction' abi? Everyone wants something big and better because they offer better packages and exposures . . Smaller companies can't do that because of finance. ... 4 Likes |

GTs advice a brethren ó. I applied to a major Nigerian IT company to be a small fish in a big pond. However a subsidiary of this company is offering to make me a big fish in a bathtub. The catch is that I will use experience from my current job (a backroom role) to improve their operations while working in a client facing role. Pay and responsibility not commensurate. In the big pond I'm gonna learn and be tutored. In the bathtub I'm gonna tutor folks. I'm a shy person (despite my loquacious nature here) and will feel very uncomfortable facing clients although this is not something I cannot surmount. Given this scenario what would u candidly advice? The big pond have not made an offer but the bathtub has |

Like they say...a bird in hand... What if the big pond never makes an offer. It's best to make decisions based on realities on ground and not work with assumptions. Everyone has the ability to adapt. I'll say take the bathtub. If things change and there is need to re-evaluate, you can always do that. |

PresVA:So many questions you have asked I dunno if I'd be able to answer all but lemme give it a try. Personally I'd rather set up a business and earn 50% less than apply to another company and eat the same shit for that less pay. So no I'm not applying to any other company that will pay me less. A good company can only be determined from her core values. Which forms the basis of its policies and mode of doing business. Now most corporate organizations bank on this and put up edifying values but truly they practice the opposite and not until you taste the waters will you find out. But then I know Nlng is a good company because of what the Nlng staff themselves have said about the company meeting their personal and professional goals and giving them career fulfillment. Also looking at what they r not saying its a known fact that only about 5% of the 2007 GT set have left the company. Such low employee turnover can only mean one thing....NLNG are keepers! I used Saudi Aramco as an example for @ceetee because he was of the opinion that money is everyone's major driving force so I knew for sure that applied to him. If for example I wanted to give such instance for someone else whose desire for joining Nlng is say making an impact in the nation to benefit ordinary Nigerians I'd say maybe he gets an instant ministerial appointment....get the drift |
Re: 2013 Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) Graduate Trainee by Nobody: 12:02am On Mar 08, 2016 |
The second bolded part is quite flawed though if what you are trying to say is that 5% employee turnover stems from the company meeting their professional goals. For one, the company could easily not be fulfilling the professional goals of some people, and perhaps might even be giving them 'shit' (allow me borrow your word here), but then they are not leaving simply cos of your second and third sentences. Setting up a business that will match the remuneration they are receiving right now is certainly not as easy as ABC, and there are very few companies out there that will give them higher pay (so NO, they will not apply to any other company that will pay them less. lol). Again, it is common knowledge the flat structure operated at NLNG. Lots of lateral movement, but little or no upward movement. I spoke with one of the organisers on the AC day, and she said the money is what keeps a lot going as they earn far more than lots of their friends that claim to be managers in other companies. I'm not saying there is no fulfillment even if one isn't made a manager or supervisor yeah, but lets face it, a whole of us, as has been stated earlier by some other people, applied for this GT role with this company simply because of the good pay. Everything else then follows. Hopefully it all turns out well and we end up getting a fulfilling career coupled with the 'GBEMU' that comes along. #Shalom... #TheLongWaitContinues... freeradical: 3 Likes |

artmedia: Very true. Infact sometime in 2014, while we were waiting for further directives on the next stage of the recruitment i.e after mails had been sent for the SHL results, the General Manager, External Relations, Dr. Kudo Eresia-Eke granted an interview on the culture alignment journey going on in NLNG at the time. The reasons given for this was that there seemed to be a disconnect in the culture of the company considering the fact that the staff strenght consisted of people from shareholders companies with different corporate culture, setting and background. One other serious issue was that quite a good number of staff were really disgruntled and not satisfied with their growth rate in the company. A survey was then conducted amongst all members of staff to address these issues. Summary is, if not because of the money, i bet you turnover rate of the company would quadruple its current rate. We know NLNG is a great company, with their desire to constantly reduce gas flaring, the GOAL ZERO objective in their HSE policy etc, but truth be told all these would not be a concern to majority of their employees if they are not very well paid. They know they can't earn anywhere near what they earn if they move to a company outside their shareholder companies/other IOCs, so they "maintain their lane" Infact someone in this recruitment jokingly said that he would just bury his CV if he gets in. Yes we would also love to build a better Nigeria, but...Na d money men... |

airsaylongcon: My brother, a living dog is better than a dead lion. Go for what you have now... 1. No experience is ever a waste. 2. At least you will meet new people and make new friends (and enemy too, maybe ) Relationship and connection can bring limitless opportunities in the future. 3. Taking the bathtub job might also hasten the big pond people to come get you. Just dont sign a bond that will restrict your movement, since you have the big pond in mind such that you can change when you wish. Ultimately, there is a way that seems right... God knows best. |

The Managing Director, Nigeria LNG Limited Intels Aba Road Estate KM 16 Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria Dear Sir, RE: FEEDBACK ON GRADUATE TRAINEE RECRUITMENT I am Dane15 one of your prospective GTs and I am writing this letter to you with all humility and due respect believing it will get to you at the top. Before applying for this job in November 2013 after having participated in the NNPC recruitment that stalled since 2012, I was nonchalant at first because of the name of the company that starts with Nigeria. I wrongly believed at the time that most Nigerian companies are birds of the same feather. I believe that I must have been among the last set of people to submit their resumes as I was more interested in sending the advert to my unemployed friends than personally applying. After applying, I read the facts and figures for 2013 and started to see that I made a very right choice by applying. The one that never ceases to touch me is when I read the profiles of the Management team and I am amazed to see a team of very intelligent people that have risen to the top through hard work and a track record of excellence. To know that this crop of the crème de la crème of Nigerian intellects will be the ones steering the company and also be my managers and bosses very soon is nothing short of thrilling. You sir, started as a Chemistry and Mathematics Teacher to become the NLNG MD. This apparently is not by mistake as one can easily see from your profile that you handled key positions well in the past and made the best out of them, the DMD a very knowledgeable and widely experienced guru, GM- Production-Mr. Chima Isilebo (I am not an Engineer but I would love to have him as a mentor when I get in) a man that truly represents excellence from what I have seen on his profile and I am not surprised he is in charge of the plant complex. The GM-Commercial , Finance, External Relations, HR, NLNG Shipping, General Counsel equally have tremendously intimidating profiles and any of all profiles listed above can be used to motivate countless people anywhere in the world on how to reach the top through an excellent mindset. This triggered my awareness in your company and after much research, I also found out that NLNG is a truly global company in terms of contribution to the Nigerian economy, community impact and staff welfare. My desire to become one of you grew from nonchalance to a wish and then to this big dream of mine. Because of my keen interest, I have followed details of your announcement on anything financial and I believe that our annual remuneration which most likely is the reason for this delay when converted to USD is too insignificant at the moment relying on facts and figures from your company as a basis. (1USD/305NGN-Parallel market rate). I also believe that judging from the quality of talents that have been exuded from this thread that the benefit of us resuming as quickly as possible will eventually exceed the cost even if the target recruits are not scaled down as the market price is cyclical in nature and will not remain at this level for too long. Sir, it is widely reported that NLNG invested in assets to the tune of $14bn last year 2015 even in the midst of lowering prices, our salaries at most over 35 years of service will most likely not top $420mn and the fact that with time we will be the ones that will be entrusted to manage the $14bn plus assets speaks volumes about our benefits to NLNG in the long run. Sir, someone once spoke about this recruitment being debated on a radio and at the moment it seems like we are competing with NNPC for longest running recruitment. I believe we are better than this sir. We are a global first class truly Nigerian company. We are pacesetters. I believe people should learn from NLNG on how to do things. I would like to appreciate the HR a lot under your guidance on how they have responded to uncertainties in this recruitment ranging from Ebola Virus to Oil price fluctuations. I want to specially thank you for approving the takeoff of this recruitment and I truly believe that you will listen to our pleas and approve the wrap up of this recruitment this March 2016. I hope this gets to you some way, somehow and I hope it makes you smile. Thanks for taking the pain to read our documented plea. Your soon to be staff, Dane15 22 Likes |
