1983-85: Buhari Never Ruled Nigeria But IDIAGBON - Factfinders by Freegift75: 4:41pm On Mar 07, 2016
Almost a year after President Buhari took the mantle of power to rule Nigeria, Nigerians have started regretting for the decision to vote him as the messiah to save Nigeria from hardship.

History have it that Mohammad Buhari while he was in Military never ruled Nigeria. He was just a camouflage over the ACTOR Man of the 1983-1985 regime, Major General Tunde Idiagbon. Buhari was renowned to be a very soft-hearted man, a religious man with solemn mind.

The fact remains that all the policies during Buhari/Idiagbon regime were spearheaded by Idiagbon!........................

A lot of Nigerians hate him because he wanted them
to be more responsible, more disciplined and more useful. Many soldiers were totally terrified of him. Some others were so petrified at his mere presence that even Babangida, Abacha and his fellow coup
plotters could not execute a coup with Idiagbon on Nigerian soil. They had to wait for him to leave the country. Idiagbon was too disciplined, too straight and too honest for corrupt individuals.

An extremely courageous man, Idiagbon did the unthinkable: he came right back to the country even when he knew clearly that his Commander-in-Chief, Buhari had been deposed, and guns, tanks and battle-ready soldiers would be waiting for him at the airport. Against all advice, he came back to Nigeria. He returned to face his enemies (even Gowon did not come back to challenge his foes). Idiagbon was a true General, a no- nonsense one at that. A most loyal friend who made many enemies. He said it would be a honour for him to die beside Buhari, his boss, who saved his life during the civil war.

As the de facto Vice President of Nigeria, Idiagbon spearheaded some policies that many Nigerians have translated as some of the most extreme and stringent in the nation’s history. And they have their reasons.

Idiagbon pursued the policy of War Against Indiscipline with a ruthless zeal. Under him, the law respected no one. When Fela was caught at the airport with more foreign cash than was stipulated by law, he was promptly arrested and made to face the music, just that it was not Afrobeat.

As expected, some of those that bore the biggest brunt of the Buhari/Idiagbon regime were politicians deemed corrupt. Many of them were governors of the ousted Shagari regime. Special military tribunals were set up to try these politicians and at the end, they were handed some really incredible jail sentences. For instance, the late Alhaji Barkin Zuwo, who had been elected the Governor of Kano State, could not help burst out laughing when the military tribunal sent him to 250 years in prison. He laughed really hard at the idea that he would be leaving prison in 2234. Many thought Idiagbon was joking but he was dead serious.

Idiagbon would blast corrupt politicians on
radio and promised to smoke them out of
their holes and make them face justice. Little
wonder he made so many powerful enemies.
On Radio Nigeria, he addressed the nation in
a programme called Military In Action. Many
of the indicted politicians were banned from
holding public offices for life.

Idiagbon was the most visible figure of the Supreme Military Council. When the Detention of Persons Decree Number 2 of 1984 came up, Idiagbon was the only person who appended his signature. He was dreaded by many and it was so serious that the
Nigerian Bar Association issued a communiqué on the 13th of August, 1984 stating that the Supreme Military Council may very well take over the jurisdiction of the courts with the way it was just firing decrees upon decrees.

Idiagbon believed that Nigeria was strong enough to develop from within and he believed strongly that should Nigeria be focused, the world’s most populous black nation would become a creditor nation. At an African Regional Conference of the
International Bar Association in Lagos, he blasted the International Monetary Fund when he said: “International Monetary Fund (IMF) cures no sick state, in most cases, they worsen the ailment.” He was so sure and confident of Nigeria’s inherent greatness that when the Deputy Premier of the Democratic
People’s Republic of China paid him a courtesy visit, Idiagbon declared: If China can feed herself in spite of her large population, there is no reason why Nigeria cannot be self reliant.”

No one speaks against his integrity, but soft-mindedness. Nigeria requires an insane head to rule it. It needs a strong man of valour. But Buhari is not the type

It's unfortunate that what people heard about Buhari/Idiagbon regime was Buhari's name. There's no Idiagbon among this present league of democratic politicians. They are after eating the yam to finish.

Those who witnessed the regime can testify to this fact. In 1983 I was in Pry 3. I can still say what I heard from the elders then. Buhari was chosen because of his integrity, hoping to be loyal to the military caucus. But Idiagbon disorganised the whole military plans. He never compromised.

The same is happening today. Buhari's loyalty to some cabals will hunt his administration. Buhari is surrounded with Lions, ready to devour him and this is militating his administration.

If the likes of Idiagbon had taken over the mantle of power to rule this nation, it could have been another positive stories

Try to understand Buhari well. When he was in command of Battalion in Jos 1983 before he was chosen to be Head Of State, even the league of Army then can testify that he is slow to action. His decision has always been guided by the fear of offending Allah.
If he is so brave as many insinuate, he should have jailed Obasanjo, Tinubu, Jonathan, etc. That's what Idiagbon is bold to do. But Osinbajo dares not

On the contrary, he acted so quick in repelling invasion from Chad that President Shagari accused him of not waiting for his order to engage Chadian troops by which time Buhari's troops were occupying Chadian territory. Shagari ordered him to retreat to our border and Buhari said he did not realise he had gone so deep into Chadian territory.

Neophytes attempting to re-write history. Were you born or matured enough in 1983 to know Buhari? Show us a link or reference where the league of army testified that Buhari as battalion commander or head of state was too slow.

At least you are aware that he was chosen to be head of state, you fellow neophytes allege that Buhari singlehandedly planned and executed the 1984 coup.

The league of army testified that Buhari was too slow but General Gowon appointed him governor of the old Gongola state.
The league of army testified that Buhari was too slow but General Obasanjo appointed him petroleum minister.
The league of army testified that Buhari was too slow but Shagari appointed him General Officer Commanding the 3rd Armoured Division in Jos.
The league of army testified that Buhari was too slow but Babangida, Idiagbon and Abacha appointed him head of state after their successful coup.
The league of army testified that Buhari was too slow but Abacha appointed him chairman of petroleum trust fund
And finally, the league of army testified that Buhari was too slow but Nigerians voted him president.

Pray that the league of army should testify that any member of your generation is too slow so that they can achieve one tenth if what Buhari had achieved.

Don't mind them.

According to history, Idiabon was not aware the currency would be changed.

In Fact after it was printed abroad, brought into the country and the soldiers were to escort it to different part of the country for it to be ready for distribution, Idiagbon was still not aware.

That he delegated power does not mean he was not in charge.
The corruption Buhari made priority then is still his priority now without Idiagbon.

It is either some one knows nothing about history or is just being mischievous about the article.

I think the former is the case.

Once I hear the name Idiagbon, his twin brother from another mother comes to mind. I'm talking about the "UPRIGHT MAN" Thomas Sankara.

Chai, good thing no dey last that's why I'm scared of the life of the new Tanzania President.

The two generals who were not allowed to turn this nation around by forces bent on keeping this nation on her knees. I like that phrase that says if China with her population can feed herself, then nothing stops Nigeria from being self reliant. Very true.

I see the opposition strategy is changing again. First they try to sell a lie that Buhari's first time in government was dictatorian with poor economic direction, when that does not sell they change it to well, it was a good government but the successes was because of Idiagbon.

Una non de tire??
