SIASIA DISCHARGE HOME BASE EAGLES

Interim coach of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia has released some home base players presently in the camp of the team ahead of the AFCON 2017 qualifier against Egypt.

The players were discharged in order for them to play for their respective teams in the Nigeria Premier League and CAF continental games.

However a few others will still remain in the camp of the team as their team are not involved in any game this weekend.

Meanwhile the 0-0 draw against Nigeria National League side Katsina United formerly known as Spotlight was met with angry response from the coach of the Super Eagles.

Siasia was reportedly unhappy over their lackluster display which made the game boring to the spectators although the result won’t affect his judgments that much.

Football to compensate north

Matches are held in states where the state government (with a decent stadium) is willing to sponsor and support the team, that is the way it works not north or south politics.

You may not believe but that is just the simple truth if not, what is the essence of taking such a crucial match to Kaduna when you are fully aware that the weather will not favour our foreign professionals?

Egwuekwe eager to debut for new Finnish club

Egwuekwe

Nigeria defender Azubuike Egwuekwe has said he is eagerly waiting to debut for his Finnish club KuPS as the league kick-off draws nearer.

The former Warri Wolves skipper joined KuPS in a year’s deal in January and has been in pre-season training, but has yet to play a game for his new side.

"We are currently in pre-season and everything is good. I am training with the team but yet to play any friendly game, but I hope that will happen soon,” he said.

"I am looking forward to the commencement of the league when I hope to contribute to the team to achieve success, but I am not setting any target now."

The league will begin next month with Egwuekwe’s club home to IIves on April 9.

Stoke City will not extend Osaze's contract

Odemwingie

Stoke City are not likely to extend the contract of Osaze Odemwingie when it runs out at the end of the season.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has shipped out the Nigeria striker on loan at English Championship side Bristol City till season’s end after saying he is “far away from the first team”.

The 34-year-old Osaze has joined Bristol City on loan after making just eight appearances this season.

"Peter (Odemwingie) is a case in point," Hughes said.

"He was as far away from the first XI as he had been for some time and opportunities here from now until the end of the season would be few and far between.

"We let him go because we couldn't give him the opportunities he felt his talent deserved and I was in agreement with that.

“It is not easy to keep senior players happy and if you can't even get them on the pitch and they are sat in the stand it becomes more of a problem.

"But if you have the opportunity to get good players in you have to get them into your club. At some point there will be good players in their own right who will have leave to make room for players coming in."

Siasia drops 4 CHAN Eagles stars

Prince Aggreh axed by Siasia

Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has dropped six home-based players including CHAN Eagles stars Prince Aggreh, Ezekiel Bassey, Bright Onyedikachi and Chris Madaki.

The other dropped players are Wikki midfielder Hassan Yau and Warri Wolves defender Oke Ogagatewho.

Onyedikachi has been ordered to join the Olympics team.

Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye disclosed only 13 players are now expected in camp next week as the coaches strive to raise the stakes ahead of the crucial games against Egypt.

"The coaches are gradually cutting down the numbers," Ibitoye announced.

"Next week, more players will be released to their clubs and some others will be transferred to the Olympic team also currently in camp ahead of the international friendly against Brazil.

“I am sure the coaches already have an idea of those home stars who will join the foreign legion for the final phase of preparation in a week's time."

EAGLES AND THE FEAR OF SALAH; NIGERIA NO LONGER HAVE ‘DREAM TEAM’

By Nurudeen Obalola:

SUPER EAGLES AND THE FEAR OF SALAH

Each time Mohamed Salah ran at the Real Madrid defence on Tuesday night, I had heart palpitations.

The Roma forward was a menace to the left side of the Real Madrid defence, constantly making a mug of the vastly experienced left-back Marcelo and centre-back Sergio Romero.

If Salah and his fellow Roma forwards had finished adequately, they would have given Real Madrid a mighty scare instead of the ultimately comfortable 2-0 win (4-0 on aggregate) for the Spaniards.

But I have no business with Roma’s Salah, apart from enjoying watching him play.

The Salah that worries me, and should worry many Nigerians, is the Egypt Salah, the one the Super Eagles must find a way to stop on 25 March and 29 March.

The challenge is that Salah has been more devastating for Egypt than he has been for Roma.

While his pace and trickery are guaranteed, what you can’t bet on is if he will have his scoring boots on.

Against Real Madrid in both legs of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie, Salah somehow left those scoring boots in the dressing room or somewhere farther away from the pitch.

He beat his markers repeatedly and got into good positions but his final pass or shot often went astray and Real Madrid were ruthless in punishing those mistakes.

But will he make those mistakes against Nigeria? If he does make those mistakes, will the Super Eagles be as ruthless as Real and score at the other end?

It must be pointed out that Salah’s attributes were highlighted mostly because Real Madrid are an attacking side, the kind of sides that take risks and leave gaps at the back.

Interim Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia usually prioritises attack over defence but this time he must find some balance.

Positive, attacking football is all fine if you have the resources to take care of things at the back. You must also consider the opposition and their key individuals.

There is no shame in Siasia altering his approach because he is up against Egypt. And Salah.

Against Real Madrid, Salah often isolated Ramos or Marcelo because the left-back either bombed forward and left Ramos exposed, or Cristiano Ronaldo did not offer much defensive cover from his wide left position.

In either case, Salah inevitably beat his one marker for pace or tricked his way past him. The Egyptian almost always won the duels and could only be stopped when he had to face two men at the same time.

The one thing Siasia must ensure is that Salah is not allowed to be one-on-one with whoever plays left-back against Egypt. If it means double-teaming the Egypt dangerman at all times or having one of the central midfielders leaning towards wherever Salah is, so be it.

The important thing is not to give the ex-Chelsea man too much breathing room because he thrives on space to run into. It’s quite simple; if you give Salah space he could destroy you. That he didn’t score against Real Madrid doesn’t mean he won’t score against Nigeria if given the same opportunities.

With Salah, prevention is better than cure.

But Salah is not the only Egypt star to keep an eye on. The Pharaohs have scored eight goals in just two qualifiers, so they must have more than one player doing something right up front.

While wondering aloud on Twitter about how the Super Eagles would stop Salah, one of my followers who I also follow, David Finecountry, replied: “Not just Salah. Egypt’s attackers are pacy: Basem Morsy, Kouka and Sobhi.

So who are these men that form the support cast for Salah?

A quick search reveals Basem Morsy as a 24-year-old Zamalek striker who has scored seven goals in seven games for Egypt. More importantly, four of those goals came in the two AFCON qualifying games against Chad and Tanzania, including a hat-trick in the 5-1 away win over Chad.

Kouka, 23, is described as a 6’3 striker who has scored nine goals in 15 matches for Sporting Braga in Portugal. Kouka is actually a nickname, his real name being Ahmed Hassan Mahgoub.

Kouka has scored five goals in six senior games for Egypt.

The third player in Salah’s support cast in Ramadan Sobhi, an attacking midfielder who at just 19 has scored 11 goals in 48 appearances for Al Ahly. He has two senior Egypt caps and is obviously not as important as the other men but is not to be ignored.

The common thing with all these players, including 23-year-old Salah who has scored 22 goals in 39 Egypt games, is that they are young and dangerous. They have youth, they have energy, they have enthusiasm, they have pace, they have goals.

So Siasia just does not have to watch Salah. The Nigeria coach has to watch a posse of young forwards capable of doing him and his men serious damage.

One can only hope that the Super Eagles’ not-so-young defence can work out a way to contain these young men who are determined to get back to AFCON after missing three in a row.

ARE NIGERIA U-23S STILL THE ‘DREAM TEAM’?

One of my pet peeves is hearing or reading people refer to the Nigerian U-23 team as the Dream Team. It’s right up there with Nigerian parents based in Nigeria – usually ones who don’t speak much English – proudly telling you “my son/daughter doesn’t speak Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa.” Then speak the language with the poor kid. It’s not that difficult.

It’s a bit grating seeing Dream Team 2, Dream Team 3 and on and on and on. When is it going to stop? When it gets to Dream Team 50?

Of course there was once a Dream Team, but that was the only one deserving of that name. The 1996 Olympic team got that nickname because it was full of star names.

Even before they kicked a ball in Atlanta, almost every member of the squad was a household name. Who didn’t know Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu. Emmanuel Amuneke, Celestine Babayaro, Daniel Amokachi, Okechukwu Uche or Taribo West?

These were players who were known across the world, even before they went to the Olympics.

Because the team was full of instantly recognisable names who were already superstars, they merited being called the Dream Team. It had nothing to do with their Olympic gold. That came later.

So, how many of the players in the present squad are already superstars? How many superstars were in the 2008 squad, although they won silver?

Even Austin Eguavoen’s squad of mostly unknown and truly untalented players was referred to as ‘Dream Team 5’. Or was it 6? It gets confusing and some of us have lost count.

As talented as the present squad is, there is not ONE superstar in there. Except if we have accepted that the likes of Oghenekaro Etebo and Taiwo Awoniyi are already superstars.

The United States basketball team that was first dubbed the Dream Team was given the name because it was full of the biggest stars in the basketball world at the time. And it was the first time basketball pros were allowed to participate in the Olympics. You had to be living in Mars not to know Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Co.

Why not look for an enduring name that will stay for years without having to affix numbers?

Please, the Nigeria Football Federation, find a suitable name for the U-23s. And it shouldn’t be Dream Team.

2017 AFCON: Akpeyi Optimistic About Super Eagles’ Slot

By Johnny Edward:

Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is confident the Super Eagles will upstage the Pharaohs of Egypt when both teams clash later this month in a crucial 2017 AFCON qualifier in Kaduna.

The former Warri Wolves shot -stopper who is delighted to be back in the squad after being overlooked by erstwhile coach Sunday Oliseh, said the players invited for the game are capable of bagging six points from both ties.

"It's good to be back in the squad after almost a year out," Akpeyi told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"The game against Egypt is an important one to us and we must win, firstly at home, to stand a chance going into the reverse tie in Alexandria.

"They (Egypt) have good outfield players, but I'm confident of the players invited by coach Siasia to get the job done for us."

Nigeria on four points after two games currently trail Egypt, who have maximum 6 points from two games in Group G. www.completesportsnigeria.com/2017-afcon-akpeyi-optimistic-super-eagles-slot/#ckQpK6B4OMhkUMCO.99

Hughes Explains Odemwingie’s Loan Move To Bristol

By Adeboye Amosu:

Stoke City boss, Mark Hughes says the club allowed Nigeria forward, Peter Odemwingie leave for Bristol City on loan because they could not offer him first team football, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The 34- year old who has made eight appearances for the Potters in all competitions this season joined Championship side, Bristol, on Friday.

Odemwingie is in line to make his debut for his new side who are currently 20th on the Championship table against Fulham on Saturday at the Craven Cottage.

"He was as far away from the first 11 as he had been for some time and opportunities here from now until the end of the season would be few and far between," Hughes told the club's official website.

"We let him go because we couldn't give him the opportunities he felt his talent deserved and I was in agreement with that.

Egyptian coach not worried about Siasia’s comments

By Christopher Megally

Egypt national team goalkeeping trainer Ahmed Nagi assures the Pharaohs will not be fazed by the recent comments of Nigerian coach Samson Siasia.

As both sides prepare to go head to head in the crucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the Nigerian head coach Samson Siasia claimed his side are adopting a “no fear” approach ahead of their match against Egypt.

According to thenigerianvoice.com, Siasia is extremely confident that they have nothing to worry about in the double-header. Ahmed Nagi was quick to respond claiming “Siasia’s statements won’t affect Egypt players or the coaching staff,” when quizzed on the subject in a television interview on Wednesday.

He then went on to add: “We’re used to hearing these kinds of comments from African coaches. The statements indicate he is worried about the Egypt clash. Siasia respects the Egypt team. He knows our abilities. We also respect the Nigeria team, as they are strong opponents, so I hope to achieve a positive result,” Nagi said.

Ahmed Nagi went on to conclude stating: “The team will hold a camp on the 19th of March as the squad will be announced after the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup games. Then we will fly to Nigeria on the 23rd of March in a private Jet, arriving in Kaduna.”

The Pharaohs currently lead Nigeria in the qualifying group, with Egypt having won both of their matches to date, two points ahead of the second placed Nigeria. The upcoming clashes could well decide who obtains the automatic qualifying spot from the group, with only the group winners going to the 2017 African Cup automatically.

Nigeria v Egypt: Ighalo’s goal drought opens doors for Adi, Chikatara

Odion Ighalo

Allwell Okpi

It is less than two weeks to Nigeria’s two-legged 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Egypt and Super Eagles top striker, Odion Ighalo of Watford, has yet to overcome the goal drought he has been experiencing since January.

Ighalo, who has scored 14 goals in the English Premier League between August and December 2015, has failed to score in the league this year, raising doubts about his ability to play his role as the Eagles’ main goal-scorer against Egypt.

Going by the stance of the interim Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, who has said players’ performance in the previous national team assignments and club form would not count, it seems the lead striker role would be open to the likes of Fanendi Adi of Portland Timbers, USA, and Chisom Chikatara of Abia Warriors.

Adi, who just got invited to the Eagles for the first time, has been in fine goal-scoring form in the US’ Major League Soccer, having helped his club win the MLS Cup in December, scoring 18 goals in the process.

On the other hand, Chikatara, who was the third highest goal-scorer in the Nigerian league last season, with 15 goals, shot to prominence at the Rwanda 2016 African Nations Championship, where he established himself as a slick goal poacher.

According to Siasia, only players who show “ferocious form” during the training for both games will see action. This means other forwards who were invited for the games such as Ahmed Musa of CSKA Moscow, Moses Simon of KAA Gent, Victor Moses of West Ham United, Aminu Umar of Osmanlispor FK, Aaron Samuel of CSKA Moscow, Alex Iwobi of Arsenal FC and Godwin Obaje of Wikki Tourists, equally have the chance of playing major roles in the Eagles’ attack.

Ex-international, Garba Lawal, told our correspondent on Friday that Ighalo’s current goal-scoring form wouldn’t matter when the Eagles face Egypt because the coach, Siasia, has invitedother strikers who can also lead Nigeria’s attack.

Lawal said, “Did anybody know that Ighalo will score 14 goals in the English Premier League? That is football for you. Sometimes things don’t work out for you. Every striker wants to score goals. I believe Ighalo will come back and score goals. It is left for the coach (Siasia) to choose the players who will make up his team.

“He has Chikatara in the squad; he has Adi and others. If he decides to use mainly home-based players, there is no problem with that. The important thing is for us to score goals and win the games. It does not matter who plays. Those two games are very important and it is not going to be easy because the Egypt national team are a strong side.”

Similarly, another former Eagles midfielder, Friday Ekpo, believes Ighalo will improve before the games against Egypt.

He added that the other strikers invited for the fixture were also equal to the task of scoring goals for Nigeria.

“It’s a pity that Ighalo has not been in goal-scoring form recently. It is a cause to worry about but it has to be understood that the English league is different from other leagues. I believe he will get back to form and continue to score goals again,” Ekpo said.

“If he does not score against Egypt and others score, we will still appreciate him. It doesn’t really matter who scores. The important thing is playing well as a team and winning the games.”

Meanwhile, Siasia has challenged the home-based players, who are already in the camp, to show they can be relied on in crucial games.

Siasia was apparently unimpressed by the performance of the players after they played a goalless draw against Nigeria National League side, Katsina United in a friendly game played inside the main bowl of the National Stadium, Abuja, on Thursday evening.

“We have to step up our commitment level and show more seriousness,” thenff.com quoted Siasia as saying.

“I am yet to see that hunger in all of you in all the friendly matches we have played so far since we opened this camp. We are facing Egypt in about two weeks and we will not stand any chance against them if we do not change our attitude.

“How can we, the Super Eagles, play against this NNL team and fail to create one clear-cut goal scoring opportunity? If we cannot create chances in this kind of games, when and where will we be able to create them? I know we are far better than this performance and will improve but we have to do so very quickly because there is no time.”

Since opening camp last Sunday in Abuja, the Eagles home stars have played three friendly games, two of which were against the 2016 Rio Olympics-bound Nigeria U-23 team and in all three games, they have scored twice and conceded twice.

Eagles gather steam for Egypt clash

Three-time African champions, Nigeria are reaching new heights as they prepare for a make or break 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier with seven-time record winners Egypt on March 25 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

Egypt are on top of Group G of the Nations Cup qualifiers with a maximum six points after wins over Tanzania and Chad while Nigeria are second with four points.

A Nigerian win will see the Eagles leapfrog the Pharaohs by a point going into the return leg in four days time in Alexandria, which stand-in Coach Samso Siasia believes his charges will win without breaking much sweat.

And speaking on his side’s readiness for the crunch Friday night fixture on March 25, the former Beijing Olympic silver-medal-winning coach said he was impressed with the players’ progress at the Bolton White Apartment camp of the Eagles.

“The boys are coping with the routines we have been introducing to them and I am happy with their progress. The match with Egypt presents us with an opportunity to show our fans how committed and determined we are in our pursuit of the ticket to play in the Nations Cup next year in Gabon.

“I am quite hopeful that we will overcome them because we have gathered enough steam in the past five days of training ad with another round next week, I am sure our steam level would have gone up as we await the arrival of the players in Europe in camp for this very important match”, added Siasia.

Salah would be a handful for Eagles — Cuper

Egypt national soccer coach, Hector Cuper is brimming with confidence that his foreign-based stars can get one over a Super Eagles side still coming to terms with their abrupt exit of Coach Sunday Oliseh.

With just about 12 days to the potentially decisive March 25 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, Egypt, who top Group C with six points from two games as against Eagles haul of four points are desperate to qualify for the continent’s flagship tournament since their last appearance in 2010, which they won.

In an interview with Al-Masry Al-Youm, Cuper tipped his foreign stars like Mohamed Salah of Roma and Mohamed Elneny of Arsenal to bring their wealth of experience to bear in the looming tago with Eagles. “Salah and Eleny would prove a handful for the Nigerians.

I am sure their wealth of experience playing for two top teams in Europe will count over the two matches against the Eagles”, said the Argentine-born coach. Cuper praised Salah as “an exemplary professional, who excels with his own club and replicates his performance with the national side. That’s quite proven by the number of goals he scored in the World Cup qualifiers to top the scoring charts. He’s exactly like Amr Zaki and Mohamed Zidan who were impressing with both their respective foreign clubs and Egypt.”

EXCLUSIVE: ENUGU RANGERS GOALKEPPER COULD GATECRASH EAGLES SQUAD FOR EGYPT TIE

According to leaks gathered by owngoalnigeria.com the duo of Super Eagles first choice goalkeppers Carl Ikeme and Daniel Akpeyi could have a new challenge for the shot stopper role of the Super Eagles.

Emmanuel Daniel the Nigeria U-23 shot stopper is reportedly set to come into the senior national team setup as the 22 year old who is suppose to be in goal for the Olympic team in their friendly against Brazil in Rio didn’t submit his passport for visa application.

The Enugu Rangers goalkepper we gathered was not asked to submit his passport by the coaches hence he won’t travel with the U-23 to Brazil meaning his chances of making the match day squad of the Super Eagles in their back to back AFCON 2017 tie is a possibility.

However Daniel must still face up to the challenge of displacing Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Femi Thomas both locally based players as well before dreaming of upstaging the foreign duo of Carl Ikeme and James Okwuosa.

Aside his fine form in camp he is the youngest among the goalkeppers called up by interim coach of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia who also doubles as the head coach of the U-23s where Daniel is the undisputed first choice.

Siasia believes Daniel in the future will be the number one goalkepper for the Eagles and wants the succession plan to start now going by the fact that all other goalkeppers of the Eagles are about same age and they might leave the scene almost at same time.

FASHANU: EVEN PEP GUARDIOLA WILL STRUGGLE TO GET RESULT IF HE WORKS WITH THE NFF

Former Wimbledon of England forward John Fashanu says the problem of Nigeria football has gone beyond the coaches as the structure under which the coaches work is not firm enough to achieve results.

Reacting to divergent views on the issue of if a foreign coach or indigenous coach is best for Nigeria, the outspoken former England international insist the problem lies with the Nigeria Football Federation and the entire sports structure in the country.

“To me our case has gone beyond indigenous or foreign coach as even Pep Guardiola will struggle to get results with the way the NFF is presently structured, they appear to be no clear cut programme for the coaches to succeed” He told owngoalnigeria.com.

“As we speak all arms of our national team are poorly motivated, coaches are not left out as well, you look around and ask where is the scouting department of the NFF? If they have what are they actually doing.

“Yes we have a technical committee but how technical are they? What information can they reliably pass to the coaches ahead of games even if they do will the coaches respect their input, so many questions begging to be answered.

“And even if we like it or not such little inputs play a big role in helping any coach succeed on their part the ministry of Youth,Sports and Culture need to do more they appear to have gone to sleep or they don’t even know their primary assignment.

“They are suppose to be the body that organises grassroot competition, school games and more where fresh talents will be discovered for upward promotion to the main team not until all of this are put in place it’s almost impossible for a coach to succeed be it local or foreign”.

EXCLUSIVE: EAGLES COACH.. WHY WE DROPPED AGGREY,BASSEY AND OTHERS

A member of the techincal crew of the Super Eagles has revealed to owngoalnigeria.com the reasons why five home based players were dropped from the team camp ahead of the 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

Defender Christopher Madaki of Giwa FC, Oke Ogagatewho of Sunshine Stars,Midfielder Yau Hassan of Wikki Tourist, striker Prince Aggrey of Kano Pillars and Ezekiel Bassey of Enyimba were all released by the coach Samson Siasia lead crew.

“Madaki we are well aware of his abilities but looking at the options we have in the area of full backs he didn’t quite convince us he will be up to challenge the options we have in Elderson Echiejile and Stanley Amuzie don’t forget Chibuzor Okonkwo can also play there” He told owngoalnigeria.com.

“Oke Ogagatewho started very well but during one of our test games against the U-23s he was off the pace and left us with no option than to release him.

“Aggrey and Bassey in all of our test games particularly against Kastina United failed to live up to what we expected and considering the forwards we expecting to have in camp, there performances didn’t do them well at all”.

“Yau Hassan all though he didn’t do too bad he was however way behind Ifeanyi Matthew in the midfield role and with all due respect to him we have Ogenyi Onazi,Azubuike Okechukwu,Mikel Obi and Shehu Abdullahi to come, so we decided not to waste his time”

He however said Bright Onyedikachi showed enough promise to warrant him to be sent to the U-23s as exemplified by the goal he scored against the U-23s during one of their short test games.

Victor Moses In Frame To Feature For West Ham Against Manchester United

Victor Moses,25, is in line to feature for the fourth time in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday in West Ham’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford, manager Slaven Bilic has announced.

The Super Eagles creator sat out the last two matches contested by the Hammers in the Premier League, against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, due to a a quadriceps injury he picked up in training.

But the good news, especially for the national team handlers, is that Moses trained without suffering any discomfort ahead of West Ham’s trip to M16 0RA.

Bilic told reporters at Friday’s press conference : “Victor Moses, Enner Valencia and Joey O’Brien are all back, Winston is training with us today after a week training individually with the physios.”

Moses missed the third round FA Cup tie against Wolves because he was still recovering from a hamstring complaint, started the fourth round game against Liverpool and went the distance against Blackburn Rovers in the last round.

Arsenal Manager Wenger Wary Of Threat Posed By Odion Ighalo

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is wary of the threat posed by Odion Ighalo and his strike partner Troy Deeney ahead of Sunday afternoon’s FA Cup clash between his side and Watford at the Emirates.

The pair have plundered 24 goals between them in all competitions in the ongoing campaign, with the Nigeria international accounting for 15 of those strikes.

“They have two strikers who are very efficient in Ighalo and Deeney and we worked very hard to control the game [last time we played them],” Wenger told arsenal.com.

“They have a very good understanding between their strikers and the quality between our two centre backs will be vital on Sunday.

“Watford have done extremely well. It looks like the Championship teams that come up now deal very well with the Premier League regime.”

Odion Ighalo has failed to find his scoring boots in recent matches, and has played seven games on the trot for the Hornets without finding the net.

His last competitive goal was his match-winner against Nottingham Forest in the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 30 at The City Ground.

Orkpekyandega:

You may not believe but that is just the simple truth if not, what is the essence of taking such a crucial match to Kaduna when you are fully aware that the weather will not favour our foreign professionals?
cc: FrancisDiote

Is this the first time that Nigeria is playing in Kaduna? Are Northerners not also Nigerians? Should every game be played in the south?

I agree, it might not be favorable to some players but it has nothing to do with politics. It is simply the fact that the kaduna state government was willing to cover some of their costs.

Happy Sunday to u too. Ighalo had a couple spells like this in the championship where he went scoreless for like 7 games so i wasn't too worried but after his horrible first half i too became concerned, that goal saved his confidence. I also am very happy for Iwobi the team looks better with him on the field, he does all the little things well, great progress.

Nigeria's Sunny scores on home debut to lift MLS side

Nigeria midfielder Sunny Obayan scored the equaliser for Real Salt Lake to go on and beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 in a Major League Soccer (MLS) clash.

Sunny scored with a header in the 43rd minute as Real Salt Lake went onto win 2-1.

He said the last time he scored a goal was in 2013 when he featured for Numancia in the Spanish second-tier league.

"I would say I'm really, really happy scoring important goals," he said.

The midfielder has settled down in the United States of America after just five weeks.

"It seems like he's happy to be here," RSL coach Jeff Cassar said. "He's got people that believe in him.”

The former Valencia ace will be further grounded by the time his family joins up with him at his new base.

EXCL: Oliseh flies in, to open NFF 'can of worms' Thursday

Oliseh will appear before house of representatives committee on sports on Thursday

by Samm Audu

AfricanFootball.com can exclusively reveal today that Sunday Oliseh will appear before the House of Representatives committee on sports Thursday in Abuja to discuss his sensational resignation as Super Eagles coach.

I quit in the interest of Nigeria - Oliseh

The outspoken Oliseh is expected to open “a can of worms” that is the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), according to insiders.

And already top NFF shots are catching cold by Oliseh’s appearance before the country’s lawmakers.

A top source at the National Assembly informed AfricanFootball.com: “Oliseh has been invited by the committee on sports. He is to give his own side of his resignation story.”

Another source said: “You know Oliseh, he will not hold back anything, he will give details of how some top officials made sure they frustrated him because they were not the ones who facilitated his appointment.

“You should expect him to shoot from the hips.”

Oliseh has already publicly tore at his former employers for failing to support him while he was in charge of the Super Eagles.

He also complained about how his contract was severally violated and has compiled his unpaid expenses and other entitlements.

NFF officials are far from amused with Oliseh’s date with the sports committee, arguing that it is a major distraction for them as they are preparing to face Egypt in crucial AFCON 2017 qualifiers later this month.

“They do not want a public hearing to start with, obviously they have a lot to hide,” disclosed yet another source.

Super Eagles invitee Umar Aminu posted a man-of-the-match display for his Turkish Super League club Osmanlispor when they beat hosts Istanbul BB 3-2 as he netted two goals and provided an assist.

REVEALED: New Nigeria foreign coach to earn $50,000 a month

by Samm Audu

Broke Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are willing to pay a new foreign coach $50,000 a month, which is double what former coaches Stephen Keshi and Sunday Oliseh were paid.

The NFF have already been sounding out several candidates for the top coaching post.

Former Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia coach Herve Renard and Uganda coach Micho have already been approached in the last few weeks.

And former Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen is the latest to be contacted by the NFF, according to top sources.

Le Guen has been without a job since November when he was sacked by Oman.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick has declared Oliseh will be the last local man to lead the Super Eagles and has made it clear an expatriate should pilot the Eagles after the temporary deal handed Samson Siasia.

Siasia is expected to revert to his post as the country’s Olympic team after the AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

The country's coaches association have already dared Pinnick on his move to hire a foreign coach for the Eagles.

Ighalo fires Watford to Wembley but limps out

Watford Striker Odion Ighalo

by Samm Audu

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo ended a month-long goals drought in style as he struck to propel Watford to a first-ever Wembley FA Cup semi-final at the expense of cup holders Arsenal.

However, Nigeria fans will be hoping Ighalo is not seriously injured ahead of crucial AFCON qualifiers against Egypt as he was forced to limp out of the game before the end.

Watford historic win ended Arsenal 16-game unbeaten run in the FA Cup as the London club have not lost in the cup competition since February 2013.

Arsenal can also not match the record of Blackburn Rovers of winning the cup for three straight years.

Ighalo hit target in the 50th minute when he half turned before he unleashed an unstoppable shot beyond the goalkeeper.

Algeria’’s Adlene Guediora then doubled Watford lead with another superb strike on 63 minutes, before Arsenal pulled a goal back for the game to end 2-1.

Interestingly, Egypt midfielder Elneny started for Arsenal and was later replaced by Nigeria youngster Alex Iwobi, who has also been called up for the Nigeria vs Egypt AFCON showdown.

Ighalo dismisses injury fears, says he will be fit for next game

Watford Striker Odion Ighalo

by Samm Audu

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo has assured he will be fit for Watford’s Premier League game against Stoke City on Saturday even after he limped out of the Cup tie against Arsenal at the weekend.

Ighalo limped out before the end of the FA Cup quarterfinal win over Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.

The injury must have raised the blood pressure of both Watford and Nigeria fans ahead of crucial games this month.

However, the striker has now said he only suffered a minor knock and he will be fit when Stoke City visit Vicarage Road on Saturday.

“I just need two days to rest and some massage and I will be ready for the weekend’s game,” said Ighalo, whose opening goal propelled Watford to reach the FA Cup semi-final at the expense of holders Arsenal.
