Is bail now a crime?
Ofcourse its not bro but lets reverse it and you will see the ops point.

If lets say an Emir in the North bails Yunusa before he was arraigned, we in the south wont remember that bail is not a crime!

We would say all manner of things against ALL muslims. This is the point the op is making and it doesnt make sense to blanket everyone just because of a crime of a few!

Let me give u another example
In the presidential elections there were cases of child voters in the north..And we shouted ourselves hoarse until pics emerged of underage voters in bayelsa governorship elections!

If a muslim does something, no one will attribute it to Islam if some
eminent muslims are not rallying around such criminals.

Everyone knows that crime has no religion, but when religion adherents starts
defending their brothers in faith, then you won't blame those who attack such
religion.

If everybody start condemning a crime even if is done by people of the same
faith, then religion victimisation won't exist.
...not on Nairaland you will see them not attributing to Islam

THis thread makes little or no sense.

The act committed by Yellow has been onging for years and is tantamount to kidnaping, having forceful carnal knowledge, with religious conversion . Note that many people never knew it existed hence the media frenzy.

Rape and rape to death had always been on the public knowledge and no one has been left off the hook regarding the most recent happening.

So poster, what is ur problem ?

Are you a pained northerner ?

@ OP your problem is lack of discernment.

That you do not know the difference between the two cases is shocking to me.

Rape is a crime. Crimes happen in the North as well as in the South.

In the Yunusa Yellow case:

A Northern Moslem adult kidnaps a child from Bayelsa, converts her to Islam through the active connivance of the Sharia Commision, keeps her under the custody of the Kano Emirate, sleeps with her while the authorites actively prevent her mother from rescuing her daughter for many many months . Worse, the mother's life is threathened and she runs for dear life...

Here Yunusa, Sharia Commision and the Emirate are key characters in Ese's kidnap story.

Do you see the difference ? Do you now recognize the reason for the outrage in the predominantly Christian South?

"Intelligent fool" , Rape is a crime, Kidnapping is not a crime?

If politicians took advantage of the Ese/Yunusa saga, well it didn't just start today.Politicians will use it to throw jabs at each other and not all are politicians. If FFK and co are silent on gang rape down south and cry foul over yunusa that is them.

As ordinary Nigerian, crime committed by Yunusa was done under the cover of islam and its a big problem.pastor oluwaseun, ebonyi gang rape and others in the south were perpetrated by criminals who shd not go unpunished.they did not claim christian doctrine or practice or that they are fulfilling there christian faith. No clergy had risen to defend them and give reasons why he shd not be punished.example,Rev King has been sentenced to death for his crime, there can't be any controversy because he got what he deserved.assuming christian leaders rose up to say no,its injustice and begin to quote scriptures or query why a muslim offender in similar circumstances shd be freed and not him.
The whole matter will become twisted and a natl debate.

In yunusa's case,he abducted a xtian underage and converted to islam, change name and some muslim cleric defends the action claiming their is no age in marriage so far she's of menstrual age.I read 4 SAN's will defend Yunusa in court further strengthen our position thatt the northern elite encourage this crime. Can Yunusa afford SAN's?

Can our northener brother see it as a crime and leave religion or muslim/christian or northener/southener out of it.

Is yunusa and his likes anywhere in Nigeria examples of God's righteousness or criminals. You decide.

Progressive01:
Good evening.

Before leaving the office this evening, I decided to do a once over on the front page of the forum (as I mostly just keep refreshing the politics section for updates) and saw a news item that caught my interest: Newtelegraph reported a case of a girl that died of injuries she sustained after being gang raped by six boys.

From the report, there were two victims but so far, only one has died. I Hope and pray the other makes it to full recovery.

The unfortunate and barbaric incident took place in Onicha Igboeze in Onicha LGA of Ebonyi state, South East Nigeria

Four suspects were said to have been remanded at the federal prison, Abakaliki; while the other two were granted bail at the behest of one Chief Ogbonnaya Okereke.

For convenience purposes, let's call the victim Amaka. (apologies to all the Amakas in the house).

Digest the preamble above as I introduce miss Ese Oruru.

The person Ese Oruru actually needs no introduction on this forum, and perhaps, across Nigeria. Governors, traditional rulers, ministers, police chiefs, senators, civil rights activists, political party bigwigs, mainstream media, religious leaders, legal luminaries, Nobel prize winners, educational heavyweights, and the ordinary man on the street are all familiar with the name Ese Rita Oruru. She rivals the famous Olajumoke in (un)popularity and had what she was associated with a thing of pride, perhaps she would have been the brand ambassador of countless brands across the country today.

Hers was a story of an alleged 13 year old Bayelsan kidnapped and forcefully married and converted to Islam by one Yunusa Yellow, a NORTHERNER

The story of Ese Oruru took the media by storm and literally BROKE THE INTERNET!! The social media, from facebook to twitter, was on fire for days on end as Nigerians were held spellbound by the unbelievably barbaric act of Yunusa Yellow, Ese's alleged boyfriend.

Nairaland of course wasn't left out of the orgy!! Google the words "ese oruru nairaland" and you'd be awe struck at the sheer number of threads that were created on account of that incident! Of course that was expected as nothing gets the forum in a frenzy more than a story of an alleged abuse of a Southerner by a Northerner, or a Christian by a Muslim!

Threads about the incident hurriedly made the front page and run several pages before losing steam- all after commentators must have taken turns to abuse Muslims and Northerners generally. These group of people seem defenceless on the forum and perhaps social media generally since they are not as internet savvy and social media inclined as people from other parts of the country.

At the receiving end of the relentless attacks were:

1. Mr President; his crime being that he's also a Northerner and a Muslim.

2. Emir of Kano whose offence is same as that of Mr President.

Some stretched their hate to their elastic limits as the accuse the president of personally sanctioning the incident since he's a "paedophile" as he also married Aisha "at the age of 13!!"

The attacks went on for days unabated culminating in a threat by Senator Ben Bruce to sue the IGP to the ICC! Abati also arrived the scene to take his own pound of flesh!! Femi Fani Kayode of course also took his share as he could not be left out of the fist fest, moreso, it was right down his alley!!!

Now folks, fast forward a week after, news breaks of a SOUTHERN teenager raped to death by SOUTHERNERS and social media and Nairaland is as quiet as a King Tut's Tomb!!

Why is this so Nigerians??!!

1. Is Ese's life worth more than that of the girl that was brutally raped to death??

2. Are the dramatis personae involved in a crime of this nature supposed to determine the level of press/general coverage/attention it receives?? Would the offence have been more criminal had the rapists come from another region or belong to another religion??

3. Is this the first time a crime of this nature is happening in this part of the country?? Why are they usually undereported?? Whose purpose is the press serving??

4. Following from the logic of the Ese Oruru's commentators, would it be appropriate if one tagged Christians or South Easterners as child rapists and murderers owing to the crime of six folks out of millions??

5. Was the case for Ese borne out of altruism and sheer concern for her welfare or was it more about POLITICS??

6. Would things stand where they are as regards the Ebonyi incident had it been reported the name of one of the culprits is Adamu??

Mull over these while I take a sip of water... Brb.

Back..

Now, as much as we can, we always try to pass ourselves off as modern, civilised and intelligent folks with unrivalled knowledge about the essence of humanity, and more often than not, in the course of doing so, the underbelly of our disdain for civility is revealed; ironic one would say.

Here's what I'm talking about: what Yunusa did was unacceptable in all ramifications and ought to be condemned by any right thinking human- but in doing this, some people, a good number, revealed their potential to do a lot worse than Yunusa could ever dream of doing. They literally forgot about the culprit and aimed the barrel of their cannons right at the heart of Northerners and Muslims generally! Some said they should be nuked and completely vaporised off the surface of the earth, that it is the panacea to world peace- these astonishing propositions put forward by supposed Christians who should know better!

Ese lives, Amaka is dead, but Yunusa's crime seems to surpass that of the Ebonyi Six. How convenient!

This type of scenario has been playing out since God-knows-when.

Let me digress a little at this point to share another nauseating instance of this double standard/hypocrisy.

Few hours ago, someone created a thread regarding the Senators who killed the Women's Rights Bill in the Senate. I don't know how reliable the news is but the op mentioned some Senators that supported the bill and three who didn't. Out of the three, two were presumably Muslims (from their names) while one was a Christian who sited a verse in the Bible to justify his stance against the bill.

Predictably when some people arrived the scene to comment, they completely ignored the Christian Senator and the reason put forward by him for his position and attacked the "almajiri Senators", inundating the thread with just about enough insults to knock the lights out a heavyweight boxer.

They became selectively oblivious to events of the recent past involving the Enugu state house of assembly where a similar bill was killed just the same way leaving one to ask: how many Northern almajiri honourables are present in Enugu SHoA that they succeeded in killing such a wonderful bill??

Mull over that for a moment reader...

Now tell us fellas, why have we chosen to turn the Northerners/Muslims into our preferred bogeymen and e-punching bags?? Exactly what crime did the North commit?? Since when did we jettison our democratic level tolerance for ethnoreligious diversity??

Politics is a game, and as such, must always have winners and losers. A people have an inalienable prerogative to vote whoever they think could best advance their course and interests; the Northerners saw that man in Buhari and the South Easterners and South Southerners saw the person in Jonathan. Each people threw their weight behind their preferred candidate and fate smiled on the former- how difficult is that to accept

Many a great democracy were built on such incidences of shift of power from a political party with time as it addresses mediocrity and dictatorship. It is in the best interest of those who lost to go back to the drawing board and realign their strategy. Take your defeat in your stride, learn from your mistakes, and take another shot at your goal- what comes of it would be anybody's guess.

As it stands today, Ese and Amaka's cases would, for a long time to come, remain a dark reminder of our hypocrisy as a people. They would remind us of how morally depraved we've become all in the name of politics.

The Abatis, FFKs and Muray Bruces of this world would remain completely mute over this as talking about it and condemning the culprits and the region from whence they come wouldn't do their political base any good. They all thrive on the hatred and mundane prejudices they've sown in our hearts, through their utterances, which we sometimes express indeliberately- meaning they've become a part of our character!

We must strive to exorcise that spirit of hate and kill it, lest it kills us all.

Remember:

Religious wars are not caused by the fact that there is more than one religion, but by the spirit of intolerance... the spread of which can only be regarded as the total eclipse of human reason.- Charles de Secondat.

You are only giving us your opinion about Ese. You don't know her. What happened against her can't be justified no matter how you want to twist it. She is not the 1st person to be abducted from the South, mind you.

Secondly, this does not justify raping of minors. If you had noticed, all the rapists were charged to court. No one justifies rape, whether it is committed by a Southerner or Northerner. All rapists should be punished. I don't know why you guys think anyone is justifying rape.

Any sane person would be mad if his/her underaged daughter is abducted into marriage and forced to pickup anothet religion. There's no bigotry here. Try and abduct a Fulani girl and marry her, you will see what will happen to you.

Lol..

Of course my take on Ese is my opinion. I think I implied this on the very first line.

O! I don't justify what Yinusa did. Yinusa (25) had sex with a 14 year old girl (A Minor). That is a crime under federal law. Wether she willing ran away with him or was abducted, he is culpable for rape under the law because a Minor cant give consent. #SIMPLE&SHORT!

On your second point, the Ebonyi rapists were arrested and remanded in the Prison. NOBODY has been charged to court yet! The 2 Victims that were bailed were granted bail by the Police not the Courts.. grin D Lets not get it twisted. grin

Finally, the point the OP is trying to get across here is about our general reaction to these crimes.

When the Thread has to do with two homosexuals caught inside their rooms having a go at each other, you can smell the gasoline and feel the heat of the fire to be used to burn them just by clicking on the thread. Everybody is so outraged you will even cringed at some of the suggestion people would make on the best mode to be employed for their execution.. In fact, a thread lately about a homosexual that was subjected to jungle justice that later died had people applauding the Mob action.

When the Thread is about a gang rape of 6 girls (most of them underage) that resulted in the eventual death of 1 of them, Nigerians don't bring the same passion and anger that you found on the homosexual thread to this one. The responses are rather relaxed and you see things like; "God will surely judge them".

When a Thread about a Father raping his underage daughter comes up, the reaction does not carry the same venom as that about an Imam marrying a 10 year old.

What the OP is asking is; Why the Bias? Why do we blow hot when the matter has a religious undertone (especially Islam) and go lukewarm when a similar or even worse crime occurs without the Islamic angle to it? Why are we quick to burn two consenting homosexuals to death and slow to burn a serial rapist that raped 6 little children? Why would Ben bruce, Oby Ezekwesili, Tunde Bakare and a host of celebrities and the likes jump on the Social Media and news media to campaign for Ese and keep mum over the release of two persons who raped 6 underaged girls of which one is dead?

Why the selective hate?

That is the real question here...

Criminals raped a lady to death and you are using it to justify inter tribal kidnapping, rape, forced marriage and islamization because you are a muslim.

This is why northern nigeria will continue to remain backward. You sound educated but very narrow minded. All forms of crime should be condemned no matter who committed it.

The media frenzy was generated on the Ese Oruru story because it has been a trend hidden from the public knowledge. No other similar case will generate such magnitude of hype.

Religious wars are not caused by the fact that there is more than one religion, but by the spirit of intolerance... the spread of which can only be regarded as the total eclipse of human reason.- Charles de Secondat.

Forceful kidnap and conversion of a minor to Islam is worse than raping someone to death.

Can you really listen to yourself??

You say when such cases are reported in the north, "ALL accused persons are shielded by the Emirate council". Smh. Dude, aren't you taking your exaggeration too far?? Haba. Your hatred has made you distort facts so much I doubt you can even believe yourself if you told yourself the truth!

Did you even read up above how two of the six suspects were granted bail at the behest of one Chief?? What do you call that? Is that also Emirate council shielding the rapists??

I don't just know what part of Christianity encourages this level of needless hatred. The one I practice certainly has no room for such.

A crime of rape was committed and they were arrested and taken to court without any uproar from people. The law is rightly taking its course.

Can you in all honesty tell me the same would have been done to Yinusa (arrested and taken to court) if everyone was quiet about it?

And if u are intelligent as u want to make us believe, u'll know dat those guys on bail doesn't mean they are free. They have a case in court and if found guilty will do their time in jail.

I bet you didn't see this:

Rid yourself of hate. It's killing you slowly.

go and read up that thread properly and don't let religion blind you.
the youths later carried the corpse to the chiefs house and left it there.it shows they aren't in support of it all.
I'm sure your conscience is still alive

There is no profit in feigning stùpidity. Ese mother was against the union why did the Islamic cult not seek approval? Her mother was hounded and threatened in kano while Ese too confessed to being unable speak when she saw her mother in Kano. You call all that elopement. Even if she truly eloped she is still a minor.

You should have read where I stated clearly a failure of the sharia court and the police force to ensure justice.

The law does not give the court the right to force anybody into marriage minor or of age, the sharia court is bound by the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

That like many other instances I Nigeria these laws are broken because of the failure of the police force to prosecute offenders.

The fact remains that the act of Yinusa is known as elopement in the English dictionary as Ese left of her own will even if she had no right to such decisions due to her being a minor.

Didn't you read where the Emir directed for the matter to be handed over to the state police AIG; including a copy of the same orders released to the press as evidence of his non complicity; how does that amount to shielding of any body - why must you and your ilk continue to expose your ignorance and embarrassingly mental laziness to comprehend?

Any discernable mind knows that the pain of loosing the general election to a northerner who a section of the South boasted that Buhari can only be a president of an independent North plays a part in this attack on northerners. It will take years to subside

Their case is hopeless, all you can do is pity them.
Ask them to conduct a quick censors of the average age their girls lose their virginity it will not be more than 14, yet cry blue murder about Ese's elopement, yes! it was never abduction.
I currently live in the south and my js3 student spent last two nights in her boyfriends room. This is most rampant as some of them actually take in and stop coming to school. All these are normal in their societies.
The saddest thing is that whenever a certain pastor commits a crime even if he links it directly to Christianity, he's labeled a fake pastor, but a a misguided motor park rout commits a crime so long he has a Muslim sounding name, it's Islam that takes the bashing.
I don't care much replying most of them, because I don't see the point. Like I said most of them are intellectually handicapped.
