Elder statesman, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, has
called on Christians in Nigeria to rise
against any move to Islamize the country.
He warned that the secular status of the
country must be respected.
In an interaction with journalists at his
Lagos home on the recent move by
President Muhammadu Buhari to drag
Nigeria to the Saudi Arabia-led Coalition
Against Terror, Prof. Nwabueze said: “We
have had this kind of thing before when
Gen. Ibrahim Babangida took Nigeria into
the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC).
“You remember that and that nearly tore
this country into pieces and I remember the
crisis created by this. The secular status of
this country must be respected. Religion is
one of the things that arouse so much
bitterness. People regard their religion, their
faith as an essential part of their being,
both in life here and life after; they should
not play with the religious character of this
country. That’s why it’s said that no
religion must be adopted as the religion of
the state.
“Now this thing about coalition of countries
headed by Saudi Arabia against terrorism,
this country is not a Muslim country. It’s
not a Muslim state. If they are forming
alliances of Muslim states, okay but don’t
drag Nigeria into it,” he said.
While he applauded Christian in the north­
ern part of the country for rising against the
move, Nwabueze said: “Christians in the
North are not strong enough to challenge
the action. The Christian Association of
Nigeria (CAN), Christians all over the
country should be up in arms as they were
when Babangida took us to OIC. I’m
surprised that the action so far has not
engulfed the whole country.”
Answering question on the reputation of the
President and having what it takes to fight
corruption, he said: “They are two issues;
the will is one issue, you may have the will
and I think he has the will but is he going
about it the right way?
Is perversion not an aspect of corruption?
You pervert the constitution, institutions all
in the name of the war against corruption,
what is that? Is that not corruption?

I find it difficult to believe that a Professor will make such utterances. But, if that is true is very unfortunate. Prof who should have known better and debunk immediately any thinks around him and educate the people better.

Boko haram is allied with ISIS, which happens to be the world's leading terrorist organization, founded, trained and funded by non other than Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

The so called coalition against terror is a pretence to send ground forces to help the losing coalition of Saudi funded terrorist groups trying to oust Assad in Syria.

So, Assad and Iran, now basking in victory, is Saudi Arabia's ultimate target for this useless coalition that Buhari has dragged us into.

Nigeria has no business in middle East crap.

According to APC/buhari, they say boko haram has been defeated, so if boko haram has been defeated, why go to Saudi Arabia to join coalition with Islamic countries? Does that make sense to you?

There is what is called being proactive rather than reactive..... angry...if the IB had moved to contain the flow of arms after Ghadaffi was overthrown....we would not have been in this mess.... angry.....I am sure you heard Baba in his recent interview saying he was prepared to send Nigerian troops to Libya to fight them there....that is the mark of leadership...

If your house is on fire and you have a little water to quench it, will you take the water to your neighbour's house to help him quench his own fire? Won't you use it to quench your's? Whichever party you have soft spot for, you shouldn't be celebrating this kind of news. How can you have insurgency in your country yet you want to send troops to Libya? Remember recently Buhari went to Europe to meet with leaders concerning the crisis in Syria, I just wonder how he'll feel in such gathering discussing problems of another country, when your's isn't fully solved.

All these our illiterate southerners who like to raise dust when there is nothing. How many years did military Generals from d north ruled Nigeria without Islamizing Nigeria? Who in d south would have stopped them then? Something they didn't and couldn't do in d military era how much more now. I keep saying that we, d southerners are the real problem this nation has. We are responsible for d way Nigeria is today. Just look at d types of comments alone coming from nairaland alone from most of who claimed to be educated.
