worry359:Yes. I support this too. Ask him pointblank and tell him without mincing words that you're going to alert the IRS that the card came without an envelope (is that even possible for the card to come with an envelope ) if he can't give you reasons why the packet was open. Watch him sing like a canary. |

MamaOO: No. Not in the US. Our tax filing season starts in mid January and ends mid Alril. This year's has been on from January 19 and it ends in April 15. So if he wants to use it, he might have used it already and that's just too sad. That said, there is no excusing what he did. Even if he did not use the SSN to claim credits, what he did was absolutely wrong. Social Security Administration is always boldly written on the envelope that brings the card in the mail, so he cannot tell her that he didn't know that it contains the baby's SSN. Then he still went ahead and hid the entire card from her after opening and probably copying the number. Arghhh. How criminal can that be? He didn't think about the criminal implications of that before opening the documents and even hiding it from her? You know what SSN issues can cause someone in America? You gotta experience it before you feel the full weight of it. I still stand by what I said. Call the IRS identity theft hotline. Tell them the envelope was delivered open. No need to mention the person that opened it. Let them put a marker on that SSN and possibly give you a PIN. If he has filed with the SSN this year, fine. Next year if he tries it, his whole refund will be held and he will be told to verify identity with the PIN you were given and since he doesn't know it, that's when the issue will start. If he can't produce it, his whole refund will be held and might prompt an audit and even an investigation. Some Nigerians here are just appalling and I've heard stories of hosts doing that to people. What will the 2K or less claimed from child credit do for you? What? Nonsense!!! Ok. She needs to find out first if he has used it and a way to block it. I still maintain my point against reporting him to the authority and possibly getting a criminal record because family is involved here 6 Likes 2 Shares |

worry359: He intends to use it there is no doubt about that!!! But he can be stopped without involving the authorities Anyways up to her to decide. Carry your husband along in your plans sha whatever you decide #GhostModeReactivated 2 Likes 1 Share |

justwise:[b] Not going to argue Mr justwise. We do not know what he intended, but several of the possible things could have long term consequences for her or the child. She and preferably her husband need to get to the bottom of what he intended. Then they can decide if family comes in front of any future problems and act as they see fit. |

My own $5 contribution . Go with just wise advice . Call the IRS theft hotline . And tell them your child SSN came without envelops and you will like to guide against fraudulent activities . That you will like to either get a pin for it or change it . And if your Inlaw gets to know , you will tell him that because it came without envelops so you just thought you should safeguard it and that you called cus you didn't want to disturb him or his wife with your problem , say this with all innocence.Because he's your inlaw and when they are deciding your case you won't be there to defend yourself and this will not go down well with the whole family . 15 Likes 1 Share |

Ye2ndearisto: For the bolded, chop knuckle!!! You needed to have been there to see me lamenting to my relatives about my son's SSN "not showing up in the mail"...... wetin me know say a nor apply for... I even gave my story credence by visiting the closest SS office, I still call them to wail about America's "inefficiency" ... 9 Likes |
Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 3 by bbaby84(f): 5:32pm On Mar 20, 2016 |
justwise: I don't think he has used it yet ( I heard a child needs to be 6months, I stand to be corrected) hence she can just report the state at which she received the mail. And ask if she can protect it againSt being used fraudulently. Well said @ye2ndearisto. |

enitan46: Not many airlines go direct to the US without any stop. I am only sure of Delta Airlines and Arik but Arik doesn't lift preggers after 28weeks so ur best bet is Delta cos they carry up till 36weeks. Also, if u didn't get ur visa specifically for birthing in the US, I advise that u avoid a POE such as Houston. You can use other POE just like ur friend suggested. 2 Likes |

@ girllom if I were in ur place though I pray not to be, what I will do is 1. I will tell my host that I was informed that the SSN was not supposed to arrived open so as a result of it been open I need to call IRS office. So he should be in the known from the onset. 2. I will call the office & let them know that the SSN came open (it is left for them to figure out what happened) & will like then to verify if it was tampered with & also block the number. 3. I would not ask for another number since it is not needed for anything at the moment wen I need it in the future will apply. There is nothing my host will tell me, be it apology or whatsoever that will hinder me from calling the IRS office as I nor want wahala 4. I will act as if all is well while I facilitate my return back to Nigeria. Express my gratitude to them for accommodating me & let IRS do whatever they deem fit, if it was a fraud. 5. I will never be their guest. All this family members over there are something else, they are always scared of accommodating their relatives because they feel we are going to abandon our bills for them to pay up whereas when they have the opportunity to defraud they don't hesitate. I remember my aunt who accommodatedo me saying am proud of you as she was shocked when I paid my hospital bills of over 10k usd. 4 Likes 1 Share |

modath:best thing is get your own accommodation when going on this birthing journey, i'm yoruba too o and all these issues here and there about SSN etc whey I don dey hear I don keep am for my left hand for the future, just get your own accomodation and stay or rather don't even take this SSN in question since the child ain't residing there, when the baby is old and wants to settle down there she/ he is free to apply for SSN, dem no dey catch late comer for SSN office na so no be must to apply now, let this one serve as a lesson to mummy's on the missionary journey no need to apply for SSN if not necessary to avoid stories that touch and family talk talk 2 Likes |

My fellow Yoruba and non Yoruba Sis..... Wisdom is the principal thing in all thy gettings get wisdom . You see Inlaw wahala kills faster than poison especially if it's a wife that's involved, even your husband can deny that he warned you. May God just continue to keep Iya Yetunde (my mummy). Wisdom and patience can't be over emphasized when dealing with in laws . May God bless our marriages 9 Likes 2 Shares |

Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 3 by MamaOO: 11:20pm On Mar 20, 2016 |
justwise:That's not the case. You can file anytime. Even if the baby was born during tax season or was born a week before tax season ends. So far you've not filed your own taxes at that time. If he/she was not born during tax season, you wait till the next year. 1 Like |

Okay house, after reading all the comments I decided to ask my sister inlaw about the SSN. I went to her that I was worried that his card came without an envelope and got a shocker...she said what do I want to use the envelope for? I said SSN is private information and why was it opened, she said they opened it because they could. I lost it and told her respect was reciprocal and it was wrong. She turned it into fight and asked me to leave her house. The husband came and intervened that they held on to it because it was delicate, dumbest reason ever. Unfortunately, my husband is scared of his sister and not saying much. I am so mad right now, I never wanted to stay with his family but didn't have a better option. Just looking to get his visa and return home asap 2 Likes |
