The 55-year-old adventurer, Lieutenant Colonel Alastair Edward Henry Worsley, MBE(born 4 October 1960 – 24 January 2016) was a British explorer and British Army officer. He was part of the successful 2009 expedition that retraced Ernest Shackleton's footsteps in the Antarctic and was aiming to complete the first unsupported, solo and unassisted crossing of the Antarctic and was 30 miles from his goal when he had to be airlifted from the ice after falling ill. He was on the brink of making history.

Henry Worsley's intention was to follow in the spirit of his hero, Shackleton, and before starting the trip raised over £100,000 for the Endeavour Fund, set up to assist injured servicemen and women. The patron of the expedition was Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. Worsley arrived at his starting point, Berkner Island, on 13 November 2015 with the aim of completing his journey in 80 days. He covered 913 miles (1,469 km) in 69 days, and had only 30 miles (48 km) to go. However, he had to spend days 70 and 71 in his tent suffering from exhaustion and severe dehydration. Eventually he radioed for help and was airlifted to Punta Arenas, Chile. He was diagnosed with bacterial peritonitis. On 24 January 2016, he died of organ failure following surgery at the Clinica Magallanes in Punta Arenas. He was 55 years old.

It is the SUN, the sun hit Africa and every other countries around the Equator directly with full force throughout the year while the southern and Northern most countries do not get enough of it and some months they don't even see the Sun at all. smiley

The biggest dangers to humans in Antarctica, aside from the cold temperatures, is not what you would think. Fire is extremely dangerous in Antarctica due to the very dry conditions. It is almost impossible to stop a fire.

Nobody owns Antarctica.

Although a few nations, including Australia, Argentina, and the United Kingdom, have tried to lay claim to it over the years, it remains free of government and ownership. In 1959, the Antarctic Treaty was drafted, designating the land as "a natural reserve, devoted to peace and science." 48 nations have signed the treaty.

It seemed no life has been buried in Antarctica. If there is, how do they dig the ground and lay someone beneath.

The cold, windy, and overall harsh climate of Antarctica keep wildlife to a minimum. However, there are a limited amount of insects and birds that call the continent home.

*. Antarctica is the only continent on earth that does not have an indigenous ant species.

*. There are several marine based animals that live in Antarctica such as seabirds, penguins, seals, squid, and whales. Most animals that survive in Antarctica share a common characteristic. They have thick layers of blubber (insulated fat) to keep warm. Some species have several inches of blubber to survive.

*. Land wildlife is very rare in Antarctica. The largest land based creature is actually an insect. The wingless Midge is only a half an inch long (1.5cm).

*. Only one warm blooded animal remains year round in Antarctica. The emperor penguin stick around through the most unforgiving winter on Earth to care for their young without food.

*. Antarctica’s neighboring oceans are home to the most cold adapted animals on Earth. There are several species of fish that live in the waters near Antarctica that thrive in 0°C water.

There is a sporting event held on Antarctic every year called the Antarctic Ice Marathon. It is a 62 mile (100km) run acrossa stretch of ice near the South Pole. This even hosts a few dozen cold weather loving runners from countries across the globe.

Antarctica is mostly a haven for researchers and other scientific endeavors. The only commercially viable industry found on the continent is fishing. There are also 50,000 thousand tourists that make their way to the continent each year.

Amundsen's Tent.

A group of Norwegian explorers led by Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911. They left their tent and its Norwegian flag to signify to future expeditions that they had made it there first. The tent is now permanently buried beneath the ice.

Scott's Hut, Ross Island, 1913.

Robert Falcon Scott and his Terra Nova Expedition attempted to become the first people to reach the South Pole, but the Norwegian Roald Amundsen beat them by only a month. On the return journey, Scott and the other expedition members died from extreme cold, starvation, and exhaustion, but their hut, filled with lots of food, oil, and other goods, remains.

Antartica is not totally cover up(iced), about 2% of the land mass is exposed or ice free. In the early 19s, the Americans, Europeans had their bases or whaling on exposed areas of Antarctica. So i learnt some explorers like Ernest Shackleton and some whaling workers died and were buried there.
