For the 20 people selected, you will receive your assignments through your emails. Here is a general introduction to help you have idea of basic requirements of academic writing.

INTRODUCTION
Academic writing is just like any other writing structured into introduction, body and conclusion. The fundamental differences between academic writing and any other writing are in the area of use of 'language' and 'citation'/ bibliography (references). It is important to note that academic writing uses formal language and discourages the use of informal language (personalised). In other words, the use of phrase and sentence like "in my opinion" or " I believe in the nearest future, humans will be able to live on Mass" respectively, are frowned at. Instead of using a phrase like 'in my opinion', it is more appropriate to use something like 'the foregoing suggests that' or 'it is evident that'. The bottom line is that your writing should be based on facts or valid assumptions derived from existing facts, theories etc.
It is also noteworthy to understand that academic writing (just like any other quality writing) does not allow direct 'lifting' of secondary data or information even if it is properly cited. Any lifting must be put in a quote (i.e. "" ) and referenced appropriately. This will be treated extensively under how to avoid plagiarism. How to avoid plagiarism is a topic that will come up later during the course of the training.
It is also very important to let you know that academic writing requires ability to make a valid summary of voluminous write-up. That is the only way to avoid plagiarism- a serious offence in academic writing. You must be able to identify points, facts and positions in a write-up. In short, academic writing requires one to develop reading culture (a culture that is fast-eroding in Nigerian society).

TIPS IN SEARCHING FOR MATERIALS FOR ACADEMIC WRITING AND INTRO TO ACTUAL WRITING

SUGGESTED TOPIC IMPACT OF ICT ON EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Recommended steps:
1. Create a folder on your laptop (you may name it impact of ICT)
2. Search the internet for relevant information (preferably, academic journal articles in PDF format).
Tips on searching:
i. Type www.google.com or www.scholar.google.com in your browser (e.g. Mozila, Chrome etc)
ii. Identify the keywords in the topic (in this case, Impact of ICT, Educational development, Nigeria).
iii. Type in the topic putting the keywords in quote. (e.g. The “impact of ICT” on “educational development” in “Nigeria”.
By this, what you are asking the search engine to do is to only show materials that contain the keywords. By doing so, you could get more relevant information
iv. Please endeavour to add ‘;pdf’ to the end of the search terms in the browser.
For example: “Impact of ICT” on “educational development” in “Nigeria”;pdf
To get more materials, you may remove the “Nigeria” and search without including the word “Nigeria”.
Note: The closer what you get is to the topic, the better.
The materials do not necessarily have to be from Nigeria. You may download related materials that focus on other countries

3. Save the materials in the folder created (make sure you have PDF reader on your laptop). For this exercise, try to download at least 10 relevant journal articles

4. Do skimming reading on the downloaded materials. Skimming reading refers to reading a document at a very fast speed not to understand everything therein but to have idea of main points the authors/ articles are talking about.

Note: This is to help you identify the basic points and help you draw up your outline based on the basic things they talk about. As a beginner and even expert, always try to have outline of main points you want to talk about.
5. Look at the outline and try to arrange them in logical sequence (i.e. let them flow)
6. Go back to the downloaded articles and read them more carefully with the hope of identifying facts, submissions, conclusions or anything that interest you. For a starter, try to copy it (note the article from where it is copied). In fact, I recommend that you number the articles (e.g. number 1,2,3...10 or any number)
7. Copy the information, facts, submission, graph, chats etc under most relevant headings (i.e. outline) that you created earlier.
8. Read on and continue to do this
9. When you are through and sure you have enough information, try to read the information copied under each outline and re-arrange in a logical sequence
10. Remove the outlines and turn the information underneath to paragraph(s) (it may form 1 or 2 or more paragraphs depending on the number of distinct ideas contained therein)
11. Look for statement, word, phrase etc that you can use at the beginning of new paragraph or end of old paragraph to link the pparagraphs

Note: If you have access to a specific online library (maybe through your school or subscription), you may be able to access high quality materials on the subject matter

It's already 6:32 pm. Out of about 27 people that signified interest through email, only 10 were able to meet up with the deadline. About three people actually gave reasons why they were unable to meet up or reasons why they could no longer continue. Those that signified interest and eventually made it, congrats!. Those that couldn't make it due to one reason or the other, all the best. We shall continue with the training. With the current development, it is crystal clear that some people were not prepared for the training but just wanted to waste our time (with the exception of few individuals). Consequently, I will only add 5 new individuals that also signified interest but could not participate because we already had 20 prospective trainees. Someone pleaded for an extension of 24 hours but unfortunately (in spite of the genuine reason), I would have to decline the request. I will surely consider you in the next batch if that is possible.

There are so many types of academic writing. From my experience, however, those listed above are very common. Besides, clients are willing to pay good money ( I mean correct ego, kudi or owo)for them if you can do and known to do a good job. Once u are able to climb to the top of the food chain (something I am still trying to do), some employers pay as high as $30 per page! or for just appx 275 words). Can you beat that?! Well, I don't know about you but for me, from a very humble background, that's a good deal particularly if you are a fast writer.
Lesson: You don't just learn how to do academic writing, you learn how to do it fast.
Note: There are very good softwares that could help you in writing (e.g. bibliography mgt tool like EndNote, Zotero etc) but I will first of all go manual so that you will know what to do when software 'decides to Bleep u up'.

THESIS OR DISSERTATION
To leverage on familiarity, I would start with thesis or dissertation or what some students simply refer to as 'project'. Every graduate should be familiar with 'project', thesis or dissertation, hence, the reason for treating it first.

Note: the spam bot has been banning me. This has made constant updating of this thread very difficult coupled with my busy schedule. I had to mail MOD all the time to resolve the issue. I don't know what I have done wrong?

Thesis or Dissertation
Thesis, Dissertation or 'project' is structured in different ways depending on format favoured by an educational institution. In fact, within a particular institution, departments often have their own formats. Also, thesis or dissertation format or structure usually varies by 'discipline' or field of study. The structure of a computer engineering thesis may be different from those in agricultural sciences or Civil engineering.
Bottom line: To write a particular thesis either for yourself or for money, lay your hand on format, [b] 'chapterisation' or template favoured by the institution or department. In the absence of this format, ask a lot of questions. [/b]
To avoid repetition, I will only use 'thesis' subsequently. Just know that this refers to project, dissertation or thesis.
