Its is very sad that this issue has been generating controversies since it was uttered by the former President Goodluck Jonathan. I don't create this post to hurl insult or cast aspersion to the person or being of any individual(s) or group I'm about to use in this illustration, Hence, I am responsible for any/every statement/sentence(s) in this thread. Premises One All stealing is corruption but not all corruption is stealing. The above sentence is synonymous to the saying, All cars are vehicle but not all vehicles are car. Consult your dictionary for the meaning of "Car" and "Vehicle" Why is Stealing a form of Corruption? Premises Two A case study of Politician e.g. I won't mention names. A typical Nigerian politician is ready to kill and maim his/her opponent just to win a seat. Why? Because s/he is going to the coffers table to steal from the National cake. This form of stealing fell under the umbrella of corruption just like wikipedia clearly state it. Another simple analogy is this: A former governor, James Ibori stole so much from his people and became so rich with choice properties everywhere, it was glaring that he was stealing, the process of stealing and buying properties is corruption and he successfully corrupt the mind of Dino Melaye, to be selfish and self centred and the worst was been sentenced after he was discharge and acquitted by a Nigerian Judge, another form of corruption! Corruption is a form of dishonest or unethical conduct by a person entrusted with a position of authority, often to acquire personal benefit. Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement, though it may also involve practices that are legal in many countries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption It is sad that a whole ICPC chairman who should be reversed in this area lack an indept knowledge and refuses to use his dictionary. If you want to attack me on this post, please make sure that your father is as rich as Dino Melaye at least... His inscription even says it all. 2 Likes 1 Share

Simple and nice analogy. Why would any sane individual say stealing is not corruption if the person is not corrupt himself? What moral standard are we setting for the young ones? Stealing from government purse should attract capital punishment by death, you can call it barbaric but its working well in the Middle East! 1 Like |

it is not about what you think or what is right not even about what the dictionary says BUT what the law says. yes, it is about what the law says it is. |

May the Gods of this nation bless this poster for this great analysis, GEJ has caused serious brain damage to most youth who should see things as it is. As u rightly put it, stealing is a form of corruption but not all corruption is stealing and directly stealing money from government is a very primitive form of corruption which hardly happens again in many advance country of this world. Changing government policies and laws to suit ones business rather than the masses as a whole is a form of advance corruption. 1 Like |

kolaaderin:gej was asked a question about how to reduce corruption & get more convictions. now he can shout, 'we will kill dem all' or he can give a measured & reasonable answer....amazing that nigerians decided to wilfully misquote him - even seasoned journalists.... perhaps you should go & listen to the actual interview again. someone has to educate you guys .. next they will say that picking someone's pocket is armed robbery coz you used your arm. - there is a difference. let me illustrate: 1. a road contract is awarded, the contractor is asked to overbill by 25%. he does, the road is delivered & the officials & politicians get the 25%... this is corruption 2. a road contract is awarded; the budget is approved. the contractor is told keep 25% but give us the officials & politicians 75% of the budget. the road is not delivered.... this is common stealing... |

luvinhubby: According to Wikipedia - "...Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement," As you can see in the definition given above, embezzlement was mentioned: is embezzlement of public fund not stealing? Therefore, if embezzlement of public fund is stealing, it is logical to conclude that stealing is corruption. Get it right. |
Re: Stealing Is Corruption (simple Analogy By A Nairalander. by gpmorgan: 9:08am On Mar 24, 2016 |
There is different between Stealing and embezzlement. when a Government official used states Money to do personal stuff, he always justify it by awarding dubious contract or inflate the contract. eg. Dasuki Used money meant for purchase of Arm to distribute to his gangs, Amechi Used Rivers Money to Sponsor Buhari Election. these are corrupt practices and not stealing cos they are the Custodian of those Money. This is Mismanagement/embezzlement of public fund and it is handle by EFCC and ICPC. "Stealing" means taking what does not belong to you, and you are not in custody of it and no justification (Genuine or not) of taking such. in this case Police handle the case eg, Armed Robbers, pick pocket, Burglars etc. In this context, Stealing differs from Corruption because it is being prosecute by different authority. |

dealordea:I think it's better you state GEJ's response. He said most of what we call corruption are just ordinary stealing. How much did Nwobodo stole, money that can't buy Peugeot. those are gej's words, not media or opposition inventions. So analyse those 2statements and tell us what's right about it for a president of one of the most corrupt country on earth to have uttered such. 1 Like |

gpmorgan:so if my driver removes my vehicle spare tire to sell, that's not stealing or my security guard sold my house while I was away, that's not stealing. If you use that perception, then no politician is a thief because they are the security guards of our common wealth. GEJ, see what you caused to our youths, am so sad about this 2 Likes |

OlujobaSamuel:he did not say that. i can post the clip if am able to get it and Maybe you need to revisit the clips very before stating the above. he said (i will paraphrase) - nigerians complain about corruption so i asked a former cjn to review cases. the former cjn said that '90% of cases called corruption are common stealing' and would be easier tried as such & carry a heavier penalty' so next time you complain that a thief who steals a phone gets 10yrs but a govt official who is found guilty of corruptly appropriating N3b get only 2 years & a N50m fine - bear in mind that 'corruption' according to the law requires a particular burden of proof & gets specific sentences |

kolaaderin:Embezzlement - Conversion of assets left in trust for other purposes not specified. Stealing - Taking of properties without owners consent. Does the two sound alike? |
Re: Stealing Is Corruption (simple Analogy By A Nairalander. by ManTiger(m): 8:49pm On Mar 24, 2016 |
luvinhubby:What are you trying to prove? What is corrupt practices? Even after referring you to a standard meaning/definition of corruption? Why is ICPC going prosecuting those who steal public funds and not those who rape? I guess raping too is not corruption, "raping is raping" isn't it? Enough said, it's either you're as rich as Aldophous Wabara, Chuba Okadigbo, Patricia Etteh, Dimeji Bankole, Dino Melaye, Ameachi and others or you lack basic understanding to discern the logical relationship between the two. |
Re: Stealing Is Corruption (simple Analogy By A Nairalander. by ManTiger(m): 9:04pm On Mar 24, 2016 |
Another premises to prove that stealing is corruption. A friend who follow my handle at work checked on this thread and we had this conversation at office. We consulted a lot of dictionaries and encylopaedia to justify each others stand. Is stealing a "honest" conduct? The act of stealing which is a form of dishonest conduct is a corruption and one of the corrupt practices, i.e. "All cars are vehicle. I may be corrupt but that doesn't make me a thief. i.e. "not all vehicles are car" Where is lalasticlala sef when he's needed! Transparency International even has it that corruption is an abuse of entrusted power for a private gain. Are you telling me that a public office holder who has embezzled public fund is not corrupt but just a thief? Under which umbrella does that goes? I'm going nuts walai. Craxe dey worry many people for this country.

ManTiger: Stop standing logic on it's head. I was arrested by men of the FRSC for a cracked windshield violation. Did not want to pay the fine of N3,000 to the bank so i gave the arrresting officer N2,000 zoomed off. What i did was indulge in a corrupt practice - Corruption. Wasiu my generator repairer comes to my home to service my generator, finishes his job & my wife's phone disappears, she realises on time & calls the phone as Wasiu was leaving & lo & behold Wasiu has the phone at his back pocket. What was that, - stealing. |
Re: Stealing Is Corruption (simple Analogy By A Nairalander. by ManTiger(m): 9:23pm On Mar 24, 2016 |
luvinhubby:And because Wasiu act is a "dishonest" one, he is corrupt that makes stealing a corruption. My point is corruption goes beyond stealing and stealing comes under the umbrella of corruption. E.g. Under corruption we have Stealing Bribery Raping Cultism Unethical act of smoking/drinking especially in the presence of kids. Prostitution Kidnapping And all other form of unethical/dishonest practices. While under stealing we have Armed robbery House breaking Burglary Authority Stealing (Ref. Fela). These are forms of stealing while the last falls to the category of our politicians hence they are corrupt because this is an unethical practice! If you're claiming Stealing is not corruption are you telling me James Ibori, Abacha, Alams, Bode George are not corrupt but mere thieves? I'm done with you on this issue cos you have your right to believe what you like. |
Re: Stealing Is Corruption (simple Analogy By A Nairalander. by luvinhubby(m): 9:39pm On Mar 24, 2016 |
You can as well classify traffic violation, pride, bitterness, resentment, malice & lust as corruption since they are 'unethical' also. The dictionary classified both words differently & nowhere was stealing ever classified as corruption. |
