When Will Nigerians Wake Up And Ask For The Real Change? by Nobody: 2:01pm On Mar 23, 2016
Since 1999 Nigerians have been choosing their presidents. We have chosen four presidents so far whom we "think" will unchain the nation from its troubles. But inspite of this we are still complaining of the same problems we have been talking about since 1980. Why haven't we paused and asked ourselves why things have remained the same after severally choosing leaders who we expected to change the nation. When Obsananjo was in power there were complaints, then Yar'adua came in and there were still complaints, Jonathan came in and the complaints continued as well. Everybody thought Buhari will be the saviour but the complaints are still flaming up. The question I want to ask is, are we going to keep electing and complaining and electing and complaining continously till the next 100 years and nothing will still change? When are we going to get fed up and accept the truth that the system is not just working?

At this point I expect Nigerians to start thinking out of the box and realize that the system is not working for us and we should start calling for a REAL CHANGE. A lot of us were thinking there would be change because the president was changed, but that is the FAKE CHANGE. The REAL CHANGE is when we call for and achieve a total dismantling of the current system of governance which has many loop holes that breeds a dysfunctional government. Any thing short of a complete overhaul of the entire system means it is a waste of time trying to elect a "Messiah" into office. We will elect 50 messiahs in the next 100 years and we will still keep complaining of incompetency.

The only people who seem to have woken up and are thinking out of the box are those igbos agitating for Biafra. I am not saying I am in support of Biafra as a viable solution but at least these guys agitating for Biafra have realized fully well that as long as the current system of things remains in place nothing will ever change. They have given up on the incompetent system and Biafra is their own solution. Every Nigerian needs to give up on the system and stop hoping to elect any saviour president which we will never see in the next 200 years. That is the only way we have can a REAL CHANGE.

You still believe in the existence of a Messiah? My brother there is no such thing as a Messiah cos a single man cannot change this country alone.

Depends on the kind of "change" and what the previous condition was. The kind of problem Nigeria is facing is NOT what a single man can solve pleaseee.

well when you find yourself in position of power, throw your towel in and give up cos you're just one man you hear. if I get my shot, I will take it and I sure as hell will not miss. it only takes one dedicated guy.

That is if you are given absolute power and you know what to do with it. Then it's possible. But it is impossible in a democracy for a single person to do all the magic.

you don't need absolute power to change things and if you want it,, it will never be given but taken. whichever way you wish to follow it still boils down to the individual

It is high time we Nigerians march to the street and protest against bad governance, lies, deceit, and hardship we are encountering in the govt.
Enogh is enough. We have a petroleum minister who is telling us he does not have solution to fuel scarcity currently causing massive suffering on Nigerians.
We have a President who turns deaf ears to the killing of more than 500 innocent children and their parents in Agatu community by just cattle rearers.
We have a govt who also pretended not to notice one of his cabinet's member's fraudlent and violent activity in the jus past Rivers Re-run where APC's candidate was captured in a video demanding for the return of his N12m bribe to INEC,where the APC state chairman was shielding an INEC officer arrested by the Nigeria Police for electoral malpractice and where a youth corp member was killed becos he refused to release voters register to some thugs of a notable politician.

We have a president who keeps travelling round the world while his citizens suffer.
We have a president whom him and his agents disobey court orders thereby dashing the last hope of the common man.
We have a president who violates human rights by unlawfully keeping people in detention for more than 72hrs without trial and keep them incommunicado.

So what if you do all the changes and after you leave office an incompetent president comes in to undo all your changes?
Can you also force the non performing Governors and legislators to perform well too?

you make the changes irreversible. why haven't corrupt politicians turned America Korea or Malaysia around. or you think they don't have useless politicians. no it's because they wouldn't dare the wrath of their ppl. cos past leaders went past point of no return

What kind of change in governance do you think is not reversible? Everything can be undone. Nothing like irreversible change. Those countries you mentioned are different because the masses don't take shit from the politicians like Nigerians do. For your changes to be irreversible you will need the support of other sane politicians and from the masses who are willing to fight for what is right. Without it your changes will swept away in a short time. That's why I am telling you a single man cannot change a country alone.

You have it exactly right. The problem with Nigeria is at least as much with the Nigerian masses as with the elite (which is not exactly surprising, as the elite are drawn from those same masses). Nigeria's biggest problems of corruption and mismanagement will never be resolved until most Nigerians start to consider clean and competent government as more important than "na my kinsman" politics.

Unfortunately, going by Nairaland and the comment sections of most Nigerian newspapers, such a day is very far from coming: that is why on the one hand you have those who refuse to admit the obvious fact that Buhari simply has no idea about economics, while on the other hand some wish to pretend that GEJ was some sort of paradigm of excellence in governance, when the truth is the very opposite. The average Nigerian (and the average Nairalander) is intellectually lazy, and generally prefers to substitute tribalism and religious bigotry for critical thought. As such, he or she is quick to justify any and all bad behavior from politicians as long as they belong to the "right" faith or tribe - even when said misbehavior is at the cost of the very person doing the justifying! On the other hand, those from the "wrong" religion or region are seen in demonic terms, with every saying or action interpreted in the most malicious light.

The long and short of it is that the Nigerian people have the quality of leadership they deserve.

then it is your job to teach the masses to not take shitt from their leaders. do we take crap when it concerns super eagles,no we do not. imagine a leader fixes roads at recommended 30 million per kilometre instead of 1 billion per click like is going on now. it means he can fix 33 times more roads. do you think ppl will agree to be deceived next time by another politician. no, he will have to match you or better. that's how you change things irreversibly

In a country like Nigeria where the masses are scared to fight, any politician can increase the cost from 30 million to 100 million and nothing will happen. Next time it increases from 100 to 500. Gradually the cost comes back to 1 billion because the masses are weak. But If the masses engage the politicians with fire and brimstone the politicians will behave themselves and the cost will remain at 30 million. So I still repeat that whoever wants to change Nigeria will still need the backing of a fearless population and other sane politicians. You CANNOT change Nigeria on your own single handedly but you can still make some positive changes here and there. The maintenance of your changes when you leave office will still depend on others.

No amount of patching will rectify the situation

the masses cannot rise above their belief system. imagine if you're a politician. you have access to 1 billion and your rival has same 1 billion. he or she builds mansions and buys cars while you distribute tractors or build roads or scholarship with 900 million while he or she is trying to manage to share 100 million to thugs and as rice. who do you think the people will vote for. trust me Niger delta started fighting only after 1 million man March gave some the opportunity to see oil money in action in Abuja. before they were just hearing about it. they didn't know what it meant but as soon as they saw it live, na im dem ginger. trust me if you show your ppl what is possible they will never back down from that minimum

Jonathan was a good guy. At least compared to people like IBB and Abacha. So what happened? Even Buhari is a good guy. But people are still complaining.

So Obj, Abacha and IBB are the examples of the good men you mentioned about cos the "built" things? And who told you Jonathan didn't build anything? You mentioned looting going under Jonathan what about that massive looting under Abacha and IBB? Anyway, that's not the main issue. The issue now is, since you mentioned Abacha, Obj and IBB as "good men" why didn't Nigeria advance so much cos you said it would take a single good man in power to transform things.
