Sometimes Jesus Acts Like A Jerk by Nobody: 5:43am On Mar 26, 2016 |
Was reading stories about Jesus lately and came across the familiar story of Jesus walking on water in matt. 14:22-33. It’s very easy to let your eyes glaze over when you’re looking at the story for the umpteenth time. But there’s something about the text that bothered me reading it through this time. Peter has jumped out of the boat and done something that required way more faith than I would ever be able to muster: walking across the water to Jesus. And when he starts to sink, Jesus pings on him: “Oh ye of little faith, why did you doubt?” Little faith? A man who just walked on water for the first time? Really Jesus? Sometimes Jesus really does act like a jerk. Another instance of Jesus acting like a jerk is in mark 11:12-14 which reads: The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard him say it. Later we learn that the tree is dead. Let's see. The son of God is hungry. He approaches a fig tree. The tree is out of season and has no fruit. Jesus wants fruit. So he kills the tree. Still struggling to see how it is the tree's fault for not producing fruits. The portion clearly states it is not yet the season for the tree to produce fruits. And last i checked God determines the season for trees to give out their produce. Jesus really acted petulantly. I guess dats the side effect of him being partly human. 1 Like |

Chilobabe:Don't be silly. What prove is there? The OP is a jerk for reading bible like a novel. You are a jerk for jumping to premature conclusion without giving me time to answer your questions. Now listen, I always tell people who lack the ability to see the underlying truths in the bible to stop reading it. Literally speaking, Peter was a man of little faith. Why? I will tell ya. When you see someone walking on water, not just someone, your teacher and he tells you to join him, you only need a little faith to venture out of the boat and join him. Peter did that but when it was time to show greater faith, he sank. It is only people that have little faith that call out to Jesus,"Lord, save me!" when little problem arises instead of using the gift, power, and brain they have to handle the problem. Peter should have exercised greater faith when conditions became threatening but he lost his confidence and called out for help. Sign of little faith So Peter was a man of little faith. He was able to do only the little things that requires little faith. That's a literal explanation for folks who have limited human understanding of what happened there. Now the real deal and reason I say that those who lack the power to read and understand the scripture should forget it. If you have a little knowledge of symbolism, you will understand that the story shouldn't be taken literally at all. According to well understood symbols. The boat was a symbol of the church, in which Peter was the representative leader in spite of all his faults. The sea was used to signify chaos and the storm was persecution in which the powers of evil are whipped up against the church. Those in the boat(church) are saved and comforted when Jesus comes to them, and they should remember that he promised to come when they least expect it, they need not be afraid when he is with them, and if they call out to him he will reach out and save them so that they will survive the persecution and live to worship him. It is pointless explaining the fig tree when you cannot understand this little one. Bible isn't a newspaper or novel so stop reading it like one. 1 Like 1 Share |

Stevebamdex: That's what they condition your mind to believe, we ought to emancipate ourselves from that mental slavery and face facts. Science is disproving that primitive book called the Bible everyday, our problem here in Africa is that we hardly read. |

Mithra, dionysus, Essenes (yeshu a notzri), Horus. All these religions, cult were established long time before jesus came. All except essenes have the same background. Divine birth of the saviour by a virgin Birth on december 25th 12 disciples Baptism by water Etc. Christianity is simply a combination of several paigan beliefs to form a tool of control approved by Emperor constantine, bible was put together in the conference of Nicea, infact constantine by legal order decided that Jesus will be known as equal with God and yet his son. Constantine helped establish the church and made it full religion. He worshiped mithra as his first god though, worshipped many gods...... The history of christianity nd Jesus is errrrr historically unpalatable. Infact the Essenes whose religion was founded by yeshu a notzri started before "jesus" came, yeshu a notri was known as the christi too, and several of the binlical quotes e.g blessed are the meek. Are all scriptures of the essenes. Their belief was exactly what christians practise today..... These are facts btw. |
