Johannesburg - Foreign owned shops were being looted in Katlehong, east of Johannesburg on Tuesday night, the SABC reported.

Gauteng police could not immediately provide information on the situation in Katlehong when contacted by News24.

SABC reporter Thabile Ngwato tweeted that the looting started around 18:00.




Another reporter Chriselda Lewis was on the scene.

Crossing live on SABC news, Lewis described the situation in Katlehong as a "cat and mouse game" between police and the looting crowd.

She said police were struggling to contain the situation as the group moved from area to area.

Lewis said the police presence had not deterred those looting.

Katlehong is a township located 35 km east of Johannesburg and south of Germiston between two other townships of Thokoza and Vosloorus next to the N3 highway in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality of Gauteng Province of South Africa.


JOHANNESBURG – The violence and looting which erupted last night in Katlehong, eastern Johannesburg, were believed to be linked to the death of a man during violent clashes two weeks ago.

Constable Thato Rabebe of the Katlehong SAPS said the looting began just before 6pm last night, but that the situation has calmed down this morning. Police were investigating.

Residents reportedly chased foreigners from the area, saying they were not welcome.

SAPS spokesperson Noxolo Kweza told eNCA, “There were incidents of looting but police have been called on time. Overnight, police have been patrolling the area. At the moment there’s been no arrests yet, but were are investigating a case of public violence.”

On March 12, a 29-year-old man was shot dead during clashes in Katlehong.

Four residents were wounded during the shooting, which reportedly involved foreign shopkeepers.

Foreign-owned shops in the area were looted after the incident.

The best way to stop this xenophobia attacks by south African is by blocking south African investments in the country where nationals are attack. Lazy people.

POLOKWANE - At least 60 shops owned by foreign nationals in Mookgophong, Limpopo, were forced to close on Tuesday after protesting residents allegedly looted and vandalised some of them.

On Monday night a man said to be part of the protests was shot at and he died at the local clinic.

“They are robbing us,” said the foreign national traders’ representative Daniel Woidhana on Tuesday. “Some stocks [are] already gone [and] they said they don’t need us in the township”.

Woidhana claimed that about R2-million worth of stock had been looted since the start of service delivery protests on Thursday.

Riotous protesters have been calling for the removal of mayor Sarah Monyamane from office because they say she has failed to an deliver basic services.

At least four houses, including one owned by the mayor’s relative, have been torched, allegedly by the protesters. Streets have been barricaded with burning tyres.

Police are yet to arrest anyone in connection with Monday's shooting, which is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Foreign nationals who spoke to the African News Agency said protesters inexplicably turned on them and began looting their shops.

The foreign nationals claimed the unprovoked xenophobic attack surfaced for the first time in the area because protesters were “mixing their political battles with their dislike of foreigners doing business in the area”.

The affected shop owners claimed they had been told by residents to leave the area and “return to their motherland”.

Many have since left Mookgophong. However, some shop owners said they wanted to remove and safeguard their remaining stock.

“We want to remove our stocks but when we are there they throw stones at us,” said Woidhana.

He said five foreign nationals have been injured while trying to remove their stock from the shops.

A local shop owner, sympathetic to their plight, said she was assisting her foreign counterparts to leave Mookgophong.

“They are afraid that looters will return and finish off their stocks,” said the shop owner, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal.

Woidhana said affected shop owners had rented a space in the central business district where they hoped to store their goods once they had been able to retrieve them from the shops.

He said so far attempts get assistance from the local police, whom they have asked for an escort, had failed.

Police confirmed that foreign shops were looted. Provincial public order police have been deployed to monitor the protests.
