Disappointed Siasia says 'broken' Eagles unlucky

Nigeria caretaker coach Samson Siasia

by Samm Audu

Nigeria interim coach Samson Siasia has expressed disappointment with the country’s elimination from next year’s AFCON, saying his team were “broken” and unlucky to be outscored by Egypt.

The Super Eagles will not feature at Gabon 2017 after they lost 1-0 to Egypt in Alexandria on Tuesday night after playing out a 1-1 draw with the same team in Kaduna last week.

It will be the second straight time in two years that Nigeria failed to qualify for the AFCON after they also did not advance to the 2015 tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

“We are very disappointed. We couldn’t do it,” said a very sober Siasia on arrival in Abuja from Alexandria Wednesday morning
“We inherited a broken team, but we worked so hard, but it was not to be.

“I’m proud of the boys. We were not lucky right from the first game in Kaduna. And God knows why.
“We thank Nigerians for their support.”

Olympic team coach Siasia took charge of the team a month ago in temporary capacity after Sunday Oliseh quit citing lack of support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and several violations to his three-year contract.

AFCON qualifiers: what we've learned

Hervé Renard

by Bertin Basson

With four rounds of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers now a thing of the past, we take a look at five things we've learned.

With only two rounds of fixtures remaining, only Morocco have booked their place (alongside hosts Gabon) at next year's tournament.

Africa's number one ranked side - Cape Verde - are in danger of missing the tournament following successive defeats to the Atlas Lions.

Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania have been the qualifiers' surprise package, with both West African nations in with a chance of reaching next year's showpiece, while Liberia are also two wins away from securing their place at next year's finals.

Djibouti are the only team yet to win a point, having conceded 16 goals in four successive defeats, while Senegal and Morocco are the only two teams with an unblemished record.

Here are five things we've learned:
Nigeria, South Africa talk a big game, but can't match it on the field

Both Nigeria and South Africa fans are guilty of overselling the quality of their national teams - both are quick to ridicule when things go wrong and are even quicker to talk up their team's chances if things go right.

Fact of the matter is, neither are much good at the moment and neither will be at next year's AFCON.

To be quite honest, though, it is bit unfair to paint the Super Eagles with the same brush. The 2013 AFCON champions have now failed to qualify for successive tournaments, but with stars like Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho bursting onto the scene, Nigeria won't be down in the dumps for too long.

As for Bafana Bafana, having finished first, second in third at successive AFCONs between 1996 and 2000, the one-time AFCON champs are set to miss another tournament. Fact of the matter is, South Africa are nothing close to the team they were in the 90s.

Algeria will be favourites to win 2017 AFCON
Free-scoring Algeria will be the favourites to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Boasting supreme talent all over the pitch - Riyad Mahrez, Yacine Brahimi, Sofiane Feghouli, El Arbi Hillel Soudani, Islam Slimain, Nabil Bentaleb, Saphir Taïder, Faouzi Ghoulam to name but a few - Algeria's golden generation will be desperate to win their first title since 1990.

If all things go their way, the Fennecs should dethrone an Ivory Coast side who have failed to impress during qualifying.

Travelling in Africa: not as frighting as it used to be
This is a notion that can be stretched back to the 2015 AFCON qualifiers, with South Africa winning in both Sudan and Congo, while pressing Nigeria very close in Uyo, on their way to booking a ticket to Equatorial Guinea.

Congo also won in Nigeria during the same qualifying campaign.
While teams are still favoured on home soil, wins away from home have become a more frequent occurrence, with Namibia grabbing a memorable 3-1 win in Burundi, only for the Swallows to return the favour in Windhoek a few days later.

Hervé Renard is still the man
Having failed at French Ligue 1 club Lille, Hervé Renard returned to African football once again, this time with 1976 winners Morocco, in February of this year.

The French-born mentor has already made his mark with successive wins over Cape Verde sealing their place at next year's tournament.

Renard, 47, has already won the AFCON tournament on two occasions, leading an unfancied Zambian side to glory in 2012 before winning the title with an under achieving Ivory Coast team last year.

With stars like Younès Belhanda, Mehdi Benatia and Youssef El-Arabi, Morocco will stand an outside chance in Gabon.

Egypt still a force in Africa
One of the greatest mysteries in world football, over the past decade, has been Egypt's failure to qualify for a World Cup tournament despite winning three successive AFCON titles between 2006 and 2010.

The Pharaohs last qualified for the world showpiece in 1990 - only the second time they had reached the World Cup following their appearance at the 1934 tournament (also indecently hosted by Italy).

Egyptian clubs have dominated African football for as long as I can remember and their national team dominated African football during the 2000s, winning five titles between 1986 and 2010 to reach a total of seven AFCON titles.

But Egypt failed to qualify for three successive tournaments after their victory in Angola six years ago, with many of their stalwarts calling it a day during this period: Ahmed Hassan, Wael Gomaa and Mohamed Aboutrika among others.

Spearheaded by the likes of Mohamed Salah, Mohamed El Nenny and 18-year-old Ramadan Sobhy, Egypt are on the up once again.

EXCLUSIVE: MIKEL COULD QUIT SUPER EAGLES

Captain of the Super Eagles John Obi Mikel could choose to quit the team following their latest failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nation according to a close confidant of the player.

Nigeria have now fail to qualify for three of the last four cup of nations and for the first time failed to qualify for back to back AFCON after losing 1-0 to Egypt yesterday in Alexandria.

The frustration alongside other off the pitch issues is troubling the Chelsea man who might call it quit with international football if the situation persist.

Mikel appointed captain of the Super Eagles shortly before the games against Egypt is frustrated by the unending drama of the team the last two years and could quit to focus on his club career.

“He is very disturbed about the constant upheaval in the team, changing of coaches and playing personel, the stress of traveling non stop for one year for a lot cause is getting to him” a source told owngoalnigeria.com.

“He is a father now and that is making him think twice about international football as the breaks will give him time to be with his children for sometime, he badly needs time to be with his kids”.

KESHI’S AGENT BLAMES OLISEH FOR AFCON 2017 FAILURE

The agent of former Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi says Sunday Oliseh should be blamed for Nigeria’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2017.

“We have to look at the bigger picture and tell ourselves the truth, we lost the AFCON ticket in Tanzania not in Cairo, an experience coach will tell you not to fall behind so early in a race, that we did under Oliseh by drawing in Tanzania” Emma Ado told Owngoalnigeria.com.

“The game in Tanzania was ours to lose but we could only manage a draw no thanks to poor tactics and poor selection that was when we fell two points behind and we never recovered.

“In Kaduna we were playing catch-up, In Egypt we were trying to redeem our chances now tell me which is harder, staying in touch with the leaders or playing catch up?”.

Ado is optimistic that this latest failure will spur Nigeria to greater height as it did in 2012 which was followed by lifting the title in 2013.

“It’s a wake up call that should put us in a position to do well in 2019 just like after we missed out on the 2012 edition we recovered to win it in 2013, but first of all eyes on the ball, World Cup 2018 qualifiers should be our priority now”. He concluded.

EAGLES COACHES REGRET DROPPING HOME BASE PLAYERS FOR ADI AND SAMUEL

A member of the technical crew of the Super Eagles has revealed to owngoalnigeria.com that the coaches lament dropping some home base players for the duo of Aaron Samuel and Fanendo Adi.

Owngoalnigeria.com sort to know why Adi and Samuel didn’t make the match day squad for the back to back games against Egypt and the coach speaking on the condition of anonymity said it was down to poor form.

“Aaron Samuel and Fanendo Adi did nothing spectacular in training to warrant a spot in the team, they were off the pace as a matter of fact even the basic drills we did for strikers they were the worst” He told owngoalnigeria.com

“If we had known we would have kept some home based players like Osas Okoro who did very well in camp and some few others instead of having foreign based players who can’t break into the team, we strongly regret their inclusion”.

We can also confirm that during training sessions in Abuja and Kaduna Samuel looked heavily overweight why Adi was very slow and doesn’t look quite fit or strong for the demands of Africa football.

@First bolded...... Exactly my words... #smiles

@Second bolded..... Algeria are surely favorites. If they fail to win with this squad, then they can forget it, because When Nigeria's Generation Next rises on our AFCON comeback.... Hmm.... We won't be smiling.

@Third bolded..... It's no coincidence this writer did exactly what I did-- Pointing out the quality in Algeria's super talented senior squad. He even mentioned all the players I mentioned from memory on the previous page. Mehn!!! Africa, watch out for the Algerians @Afcon 2017.

As for Nigeria, we'll be back.... Even the writer knows it as seen in the "first bolded". #smiles

Meanwhile, focus is currently on the journey to the land of Mikel Obi's spouse/partner. #smiles

Akpoborie faults Siasia for taking S/Eagles job

Samson Siasia should never had accepted the offer to lead Nigeria in the final Afcon 2017 qualifying race, former International Jonathan Akpoborie has said. The caretaker coach was called in; by the NFF, from the U-23 Eagles to take charge after the resignation of Sunday Oliseh but Akpoborie argues that the Siasia’s priority should have been the Olympics and not dabble into the Super Eagles rescue mission.

Akpoborie picked holes in the team’s tactics in in the first and second leg matches. Though he admits that there were noticeable improvements in the overall play of the team, compared to the Oliseh days, Nigeria are not where they ought to be still.

Aaron Samuel, Adi not match fit - official

Eagles striker Aaron Samuel

CSKA Moscow striker Aaron Samuel and Fenando Adi from MLS side Portland Timbers were not listed for both AFCON qualifiers against Egypt because they were far from match fit, officials informed AfricanFootball.com

It was understood that coach Samson Siasia stuck with Watford striker Odion Ighalo for both games against Egypt because Samuel and Adi could not prove their fitness in training.

“Both players were not match-fit after Siasia tested their endurance with some exercises in training. That was why he could not name any of them even on the substitutes’ bench,” a source close to the Super Eagles revealed.

"They just couldn't cope with the training."
Samuel was making a comeback to the national team after he was overlooked by former coach Sunday Oliseh, while MLS champion Adi was set for his international debut.

So, who should be blamed?

I don talk am before but some people no go gree. In that critical situation, Siasia needed his boys to cross the ball into the box for a striker to nod the ball into the net but unfortunately he didn't have a tall striker to do that.

If we saw how Bayern Munich was able to come back against a team known for defending (Juventus) then we will understand what i mean. All they did was to cross the ball into the box and the rest is history.

The only Nigerian striker good at that is Anthony Ujah but they ignored a player scoring goals in one of the best league in the world for Chinese product. grin Forgetting that Chinese product no dey last. grin

We needed creative play and not crosses. The Egyptians are known from history as a good sides in crosses. No do you expect to beat a master at his own games.

By the way, from my memory, the last two goals of Bayern were not nodded in. That Thiago Alcantara's goal and Coman's goal.

We needed creative play to break the defensive wall of Egypt. The introduction of Iwobi gave a hint of how different the game would have been with creative players in front of the wall.

A direct approach was not the way to go.

Crosses were not going to work. From Kaduna to Alexandria, the Egyptians beat us in aerial battles. The only time we got to them in both games were through clever interchanging passes.

That was why we looked better when Iwobi came on. We needed to beat them through passes. Sending the ball up was a mistakes. Crosses won't work.

Crosses can work but Ighalo and Aminu posed no aerial threat against the Egyptians. Compared to strikers like Lewandowski, Muller, Dzeko, a young Falcao.

Then we also do not have good crossers. I only remember Amuzie and Abdullahi putting a cross each. Abdullahi's cross was not accurate and Amuzie's cross was saved by the goal keeper.

I do not count Echiejile cross as one.

So it is time for the NFF to make it clear that Coach Siasia is staying or appoint a coach early and let us start rebuilding the Eagles.

The Super Eagles team should be made mostly of the U23 teams. We need to get our scouting game on. Both local and Europe. Bring together the best players and start gelling them with friendly games.

The Olympics should he the first test of our growth.

Meaning the coach didn't do his home work well before he invited players.

Besides that, we won the Nations Cup through the flanks.

Now you are saying this.

You said Juventus didn't score the two first goals with the head but the video said otherwise

Where did I say Juventus did not score with their heads?

Where do you derive statements like this? We are talking Nigeria Vs Egypt and your saying Juventus. Are our Wingers good at crossing like Bayern Munich players? Is it Abdullahi you want to cross like Lahm? Or Musa to cross like Robben.

So, you mean Moses and Simon can't provide crosses even Ezekiel Imoh can do that. The point is Siasia did not have a game plan hence bad selection of players.

Anthony Ujah would have changed the game.

We need quality players in the National team. Moses Odubanjo would have done better than Shehu Abdullahi.

Now you are taking us back. We are talking after the match at Kaduna, a direct approach was not the right way. Talking of Imoh and Odubanjo is not the debate. With the squad, we had enough ammunition on ground to win the game.
Crosses won't work and there was not enough time to screen and scout. Remember it is a new coach.

If we played with our most creative forward and used brilliant passes, we would have won the game.

If we saw how Bayern Munich was able to come back against a team known for defending (Juventus) then we will understand what i mean.

You said we should have used crosses. If we saw Bayern Munich's comeback we would see what you mean.

So you mean you can not decipher your own statement.

Building a house on sinking sand is the problem hence the need to revisit the cause of our disaster. And we can see, Siasia bad selection was the major factor behind our failure

Sorry, I am mixing the comeback with the winning goals.

The crossing system during the comeback, can work as I earlier pointed out due to the aerial threats posed by Lewandowski and Muller.

Do you think Ighalo can offer that?

Which of our players can cross like those guys? When we talk of the Nigerian past team, there is no one today in Bayern, not even Boateng or Lahm, that can cross as Finidi George. Amunike was also a good crosser. Even Celestine Babayaro.

So that would not have been a good option for us in that game.

As I said, from Kaduna to Alexandria, I do not remember us winning an aerial ball. So why should we resort to crosses? That is playing to their strength.

As I pointed out earlier, there was no chance to scout due to time constraints. So we could not expect the coach to carry every untested player to camp. Remember, Coach Siasia had only three days to work with the foreign professionals in camp.

2018 W/Cup Qualifiers: AFCON Ouster May Pit Nigeria Against Egypt Again

By Johnny Edward:

Nigeria's chances of being drawn in a World Cup 'group of death' this summer has increased dramatically after their shocking ouster from the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.

The Super Eagles failed to beat the Pharaohs of Egypt over two legs in the last five days thereby missing out on the AFCON for a second consecutive time.

The Super Eagles who made the World Cup finals five consecutive times are likely face a tougher battle qualifying for the 2018 edition in Russia if they are pitted against Egypt again when the draw is staged in June, with a lowly FIFA ranking and a dispirited team.

Progressing to the Mundial, the Super Eagles side could well draw Algeria, Cape Verde, Cote D Ivoire, bitter rivals Ghana, and Tunisia in Pot 1 should the FIFA rankings be used by CAF to seed teams.

And will also get either of Cameroun, Congo, DR Congo, Egypt and Senegal in Pot 2.

As things stand, Nigeria are 62nd ranked team in the world and on this count, they will fall in pot 3 of seeds along with Guinea (63), Uganda (67), South Africa (70) and Mali (73).

The final rankings before the draw will be released early next month, allowing the Super Eagles to know which of the five pots they will be pooled in for the draw.

A team from each pot will be picked out to form a qualifying group of five teams with the overall winners advancing to the World Cup in Russia. The draw for the final group stage qualifying will take place in Cairo on June 24.

Pinnick: I Was Right To Call Oliseh African Guardiola

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:

Amidst insinuation that the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon was caused by the Nigeria Football Federation's contracting of Sunday Oliseh as coach, Amaju Pinnick has said that he has no regret labeling the former Eagles captain the Pep Guardiola of Africa.

"I have no regret calling Oliseh the Pep Guardiola of Africa, it was just to give him a psychological edge," Pinnick said in Abuja on Wednesday.

"We wanted to boost his morale to do the job. It was just a way of encouraging him to get what we wanted him to achieve.

"When we employed him, we gave him a four-year plan to turn around our football and during the turbulent period Oliseh resigned and we had to move swiftly to appoint Siasia to lead the team. I must say Siasia and Co did very well but it was just not our destiny to qualify.

"We had good intentions but unfortunately it did not work."

Dalung, NFF To Decide On New Eagles Coach On Tuesday

By Richard jideaka, Abuja:

The minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, will meet with the executive committee of the Nigeria Football Federation Tuesday, April 5 to review the performance of the Super Eagles and the way forward, and decide on the next Super Eagles coach, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

"The executive committee of the NFF with meet with the minister of sports on Tuesday in consultative forum that will among other things discuss future of the game as well as the coach of the Super Eagles and other issues militating against the NFF," NFF President Amaju Pinnick said.

"I think at the forum, we shall discuss the issue of whether to have a foreign coach for the Super Eagles or appoint a Nigerian coach in full capacity. For now I cannot say anything on that issue but Samson Siasia, Emmanuel Amuneke, Aloysius Agu and Salisu Yusuf have done very well and I think they deserve commendation for breeding a young team for Nigeria."
