GboyegaD:, no be for Nigeria oh, they even get annoyed when you ask questions oh, been to just few hospital in the states for myself and baby oh, and the end of each test,it they find anything, they will explain with words, and still print out all literature on that ailment ,its available treatments ,what to expect, prevention and give them to you to home and read up. But here I have had doctors shout me down for asking questions concerning his diagnosis.you can't even raise any concern about any of their proposed treatment or they will grow impatient and shout you down. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Private is still better than government hospitals. At least they listen and act. Govt hospitals have too many doctors and they don't listen. I lost my daughter due to govt hospital negligence. It was obvious that she was losing strength, yet doctors never bothered to act. I finally lost her. If not for cost, private are better though they have their lapses |

tochimas: It's the way you present yourself. That has only happened to be once, because he was a professor. I was mad! But the others, I make it clear that I am 100% capable of understanding to the best of my knowledge, what is wrong with me and I make it clear that I will get a 2nd opinion from other doctors. So they view me as a fun and challenging patient. During my antenatal I couldn't sleep well so doctor prescribed Lexotan, I looked it up and discussed with my doctor about how I didn't feel comfortable taking a category D drug in my 2nd trimester for something I felt was a common pregnancy ailment (and my case wasn't bad). So he and I agreed we would try home remedies of milk before bedtime and different positions. Afterwards he praised me because he said most patients just take whatever he prescribed without asking or thinking of their medical history then complain. For example almost every doctor I've met say female patients lie about things like abortions in antenatal (that info is important so they can check if it was done well and there's no scarring in your womb walls). If issues arise, they blame the doctors. I don't think all doctors are good because Nigeria has an educational problem but we all need to step up. |

teechudleyy:It happened to me recently. My last child (child no 3) was a beatiful baby girl , most beautiful of all the three. Four weeks after she was born, she started loosing weight so I took her to d peadiatric unit of the health center to see d doc. A doc attended to me and after telling him my observation thinking he will diagnose her instead he just prescribed folic acid and vitamin c. After leaving his office I went to d nursing station, it was there I overheard him telling one of d nurses that my baby had down syndrome Syndrome. On hearing this, I quickly log in to Goole to know what is the meaning of down syndrome. To cut the long story short I lost d baby four weeks after because she also had hole in the heart and she has lost all energy due to hard labour of sucking. If d doctor had told me earlier I would have known how to spoon feed her till God takes control of the situation. Nigerian doctors! Even though this one is supposed to be more experience being a government employed doctor. |

teechudleyy: Sorry, we are all in it. The last time, they did all their checks on me from three star malaria till noalaria, had malaria medications, then malaria injections then another set of malaria medications. At last, they said it's mild depression... I was what!!! Wetin I dey think... Nothing... So I was given depression medication to be taking till I listened to my wife and finally did what she wanted -- me going to Gbagada General Hospital... It was there they got to know that it was deficiency... Khai! So I was given only Bcomplex and was advised to stop those depression med fom private clinic which I did.. And got better... Later, I got to know that the deficiency has got same symptoms with mild depression... Only God knows how many.people are taking wrong medication cos of this Hospitals and HMO. Guess what, when I complained to the private hospital, they said General Hospital did a comprehensive blood analysis that will show all statistics and theirs won't show all... Just brief and will only show all if I am a walk in patient and not HMO that it was a directive from HMO... I was surprised... The last time I was there, the doc I saw said one HMO (he gave me d name) said they should stop giving kids antibiotics for cough... Wetin dem wan give them before? 1 Like 2 Shares |

[quote author=teechudleyy post=44254958] I also dislike when smtn goes wrong and dey dont want to tell you in details claiming dey dnt want people to panic. You will see them running around while treating ur kin, and dey keep saying its nothing. When i had my son , on tue second day we were still in tue hospital cos i had him by sectioning, a nurse came in to check on him and suddenly took him out. They put him on the drip and oxygen mask. We were asked not to touch him. Wen we went back fr his bcg nd the matron was telling her colleagues... is this nt the child u wanted us to refer to fmr, he is so healthy and bouncy. I dnt know up until today, what happened to my son. I asked and asked. All dey say is... its nothing. Dont worry. Also, they hate wen u seem to know too much. Some patients may be terrible tho... but honestly, a doctor should open up to a patient, and allow d patient to b aware of certain things. Not here in nigeria. Never.[/quote u knw d problem most Nigerians have s DAT dy dnt knw deir RIGHTS as a patient,I dd DAT course in my Nursing School,it s called PATIENTS BILL OF RIGHTS. u av d right to so many tinz like d1 u sighted abv,ao on earth could a nurse just place ur son on oxygen witot u knowing d reason behind it? if u'v threatened 2sue dem I blv dey would av explained in details 2u d reason(s) y ur baby needs DAT,it s ur right, anyway sha,All s well 1 Like 1 Share |

Onegai:I can't vouch for anybody but myself, I'm the type that when I go to doctor,I table my medical life history by myself even when I'm not asked, I have also found out that some doctors don't ask medical history before prescribing drugs sometimes, if you don't ask, I will volunteer the info myself cos I'm on some sort of medication and don't want any kind of drug complications. The thing is that some doctors in Nigeria are damn too proud to admit their mistakes thereby not correcting it. They will rather shout you down no matter how calmly you express your concerns especially when they are wrong. Of course you don't know it but was just expressing your fears. I had A thyroid works done and was prescribed some med with a particular dosage, the following day, my endo called and asked me to take 5g instead of the 10g she prescribed initially, she said she has studied it carefully and realized that I'm slightly above and don't need that much. Of course, I had to retest in few months time, a Nigerian doctor will rather cover their mistake instead of admitting and correcting it as soon as possible. 1 Like |

armadeo:Yes it's my right as a patient. The thing is that some Nigerian doctors carry themselves like demigod and ignorant folks worship them like that.but they don't know that a lot of Nigerians have grown beyond that and know their right and the necessary info their doctors need to furnish them with, they are thrown off balance a times when they encounter patients demanding for the necessary patients information by the patients. Doctors in the states furnish you with those info even if you don't ask for it. 1 Like |

teechudleyy: These are called out of pocket costs. They're not even expensive sef. You know how much one car costs? Or to build a house? Or to pay rent for that hospital premises? Or to enrol a child in a good-quality school? These things are what the medical staff aim to acquire and do with proceeds from their services. Try the NHIS and other health insurance schemes. Nigerians should realise they must spend money on others in the same way they want to get money. The faster the money goes round, the bigger the GDP of the country |

This particular thread is filled with many ignorant posts. Most of the things the OP complained of are not even malpractices. There are serious malpractices going on in private hospitals, but these things you wrote, well except for poor communication are all normal. |

Im not defending our healthcare cause we all know it leaves so much to be desired. But I laugh when atients expect the kind of treatment they watch in movies but are only able to pay 2% of what these guys pay in other countries. See despite those bills you people complain of as being exorbitant, many private hospitals can't even pay for the services of a permanent doctor. That's why you go to some hospitals and they say they ask you to wait for them to call a doctor. Healthcare is that expensive. if you were to take your mum who suffered stroke to one of those hospitals in the foreign movies we watch, guess how much you would have paid without insurance? 2 Likes |

ashjay001: Okay nah! But please don't dare me to compare the "quality of knowledge", just leave it as it is infact just assume I don't know anything sef, infact just tell yourself you have so much more knowledge than me. G'night! (But why do people think "you lack home training" is a painful insult? I could dish out 20 worse things easily...) I think we should do away with government-funded healthcare in this country and go private. The kind of eye-opening shocking experiences that will happen eh, no part two. 1 Like |

texazzpete: Choi! i know my truth sha. Ur opinion doesnt improve tye doctors attitude. Thats all i need. An improvement in doctors general attitude If u read my mums case. I didnt rate anything by drip. Pls. I was only unhappy we werent made aware of the physiotherapy that would be needed. Doc only said mum was ok, she shd stop thinkin and avoid salts. From my three year experience, ive realised theres more to managing stroke than that. About my brother, the doctor checked his ear and saw nithing so he assumed he was being over reactive like u just did. I know a throaty cough from a chesty cough. And that is not a measure for a graduate's intelligence. Even a market woman knows that. I was just thinking... cant he use his stethoscope thingy at least? or is that just a fancy necklace for doctors? 2 Likes |

The way people bash doctors on nairaland sha. I wonder if it is the same Nigerian doctors that are excelling in other countries. In case people don't know the Saudi ministry of health alone recruited over a 100 doctors last year and just employed about 200 in March. Also mopping up B.sc nurses aggressively. The doctors are tired of the system too, and are leaving never to return. We can continue the blame game here. 3 Likes |
