I just but a nigerian used Camry 96. Every thing seems to be fine but excessive fuel consumption between 12-13 mpg city driving with good driving habbit and sometimes very hard to turn steering. My mechanic said I should change the catalytic converters. I replaced the one (which was already empty) close to the engine first. I now get about 18 mpg city driving. Should still replace the one under the car? the steering is it power steering pump or steering rack? Pls help me out. thanks.

engine type? Normally the steering pump, but if the pipe was welded previously try and replace.

Thanks. the engine type is 5S FE, 2.2, 4 plugs (4 cylinders). The power steering oil is equally leaking at the bottom part of the engine, i see the spill there close to the steering side. thank you.

my car has already done 324,116 miles already but the engine is still very sound and powerful. It does 18 mpg city now after the top (near to the engine) catalytic converter was replaced. It was doing 12-13 mpg before the replacement. Can I still get 20 mpg manufacturer rating? Must I replace the underneath catalytic converter? the car is 96 Camry, 4 cylinders, Canadian built. is it obd 2 compliant? Thank you.

Thanks. It is a Camry 96 model. Is there a connector that can connect it to an obd2 scan tool?
Thanks.

The problem at times is not the catalytic converter ' s absence but faulty O2 sensor attached to the exhaust pipe b4 the catalyst.Scan it to check for any faulty O2 sensor and replace incase of any.You can use multimeter to check the 2 black wires on the sensor,if it doesn't read,it's bad.

If its 1996 then your car is obd2 compliant. Check under your steering column for the obd2 socket

thanks. there are two catalysts. one at the engine side, the other under the car. which of the is the O2 sensor attached? besides is it obd2 scanner or obd1 scanner that I will use to scan this car apart from the multimeter? see my obd port.

Your ride is obd1 you would be needing an obd1 scanning device. Might be difficult though but can be achieved. You could use a professional diagnostic tester as well which has an obd1 connecting adapter

Chief,
O2 sensors are attached to the exhaust pipe from the engine down to the silencer. They come with 2,3 or 4 wires which can be tested with multimeter to know the one that is bad or not b4 wasting money
