I don't have the exact legal link but you can observe the position of the law from precedence. Evan Enwerem, Chuba Okadigbo and Adolphus Wabara were all removed as senate president without their deputy stepping up to automatically become the president. New elections were conducted and their deputies remain deputies to the newly elected senate presidents.

Members of the APC caucus in the senate have already reconciled ahead of Saraki's eventual ouster. It was well discussed here on Nairaland. With Saraki's experience so far, nobody will attempt to go against the interest of the party again. They've all learnt their lessons through Saraki's impending downfall. Don't rule out that under PDP impunity ran amok,
Am still researching the right procedures, but i think the process that brings in and is binding on executive elected officials, should be same for elected legislative officials.

The current dynamics of our polity will b better served if PDP takes over the upper chamber of our National Assembly. That way we can have proper checks on the executive, another APC person will not be able to provide the kind of push that will put oga dictator to check. I agreed with your logic but when you look at the set of PDP Senators and the support for Saraki till the moment, you will agreed with that in better interest of the Country APC candidate that will support APC manifesto should emerge as Senate President.
