President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja urged the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to shelve its threatened strike action and give the Federal Government more time to address the grievances of doctors. Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), President Buhari gave the doctors an assurance that no agreements duly entered into by the Federal Government will be dishonoured by his administration. The President called for greater understanding and support from doctors and all Nigerians in view of the present short fall in national revenue brought about by the decline of crude oil prices. Decrying the adverse impact of the fall in oil prices on the Federal Government’s spending plans for health and other sectors, President Buhari said that his administration will continue to do its best to address issues that are of concern to doctors and other Nigerians. The President also gave the NMA delegation an insight into his administration’s plan to establish 10,000 primary healthcare centres across the country in the next two years with the objective of providing better healthcare for about 100 million Nigerians. He also told the delegation led by NMA President, Dr. Kayode Obembe that the National Health Act will soon be gazetted and a steering committee appointed to oversee its implementation. The Minister of Health , Prof. Isaac Adewole described the plan to establish more healthcare centres as “the single most ambitious health plan for the poor in the history of Nigeria”. In his remarks at the meeting, Dr. Obembe called for the implementation of the report of the Yayale Ahmed Committee on better relations among professional groups in the health sector. The NMA President also called for fast-tracking of the implementation of the National Health Act. At a separate meeting with the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), President Buhari promised that his administration will evolve and implement measures to curb friction and disharmony among the professional groups in the health sector. The President urged the PSN to work more closely with the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to curb the sale of fake medicines in the country. The President of the PSN, Ahmed Ibrahim Yakasai assured President Buhari that pharmacists in Nigeria were ready to work in harmony with other professionals in the health sector to help the Federal Government achieve its objective of improving healthcare services in the country. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/buhari-begs-doctor-not-to-go-on-strike.html 2 Likes |

Doctors are planning to go on solidarity and sympathy strike over Aregbesola highhanded in handling the welfare issues related to the doctors under Osun state service. I think PMB needs to disown Mr Raufu before he spoils already difficult market for his government. He has becomes a cancerous cell which is ready to invade and destroy all nearby and distant normal tissues. If doctors like, they can strike for a period of 2yrs, Aregbe has no money to pay their full salary and arrears. The guy don chop Osun finish. 4 Likes 1 Share |

We(Nigeria) are in a tough spot financially.....so the govt cannot fund medical doctors salaries adequately. The problem is...there is a solution, and that involves increasing hospital fees, making tertiary hospitals public private and cutting costs in most hospitals too. But those solutions are not politically popular. I suppose we could increase hospital allocations. Especially in view of the budget's sad decisions. But let's be honest.....our tertiary hospitals need far more money than the government can give. We import most vital hospital equipment, and we also have to spend money on training., among other things. 8 Likes 4 Shares |

dragonking2: Thanks too for insulting GEJ's government because the doctors too went on strike during his government well well. And they got an agreement the last time they went on strike....which GEJ did not fulfill , and ran off and left in the hands of Buhari last year. Besides, What do you think the government should do to adequately fund hospitals.? I think that is what we should be talking about here. Methinks that you do not have any ideas on the matter.(My ideas are above) 16 Likes 2 Shares |

Bored this am Well, expanding on my previous post 1.We need to make all tertiary hospitals public private. That means increased fees....but that makes them able to generate extra funds. 2.We should also allow hospitals raise money themselves....maybe as non-profit organisations (OAUTH, UITH, ABUTH, UNTH, etc could come together and set up a Hospital trust fund...to raise money). 3.Hopstials could be run as trusts....into which companies would contribute money 4.We have to raise taxes too....and not only to get cash for hospitals. 5.The bulk of government funding can be spent on primary and secondary healthcare...now that tertiary hospitals have alternative sources of funding. 6.Why not spend more on Schools that train CHEW/SHO/...to work on the frontlines in the rural areas. 7.We need more consultants and more residents. 8.Involve the Private Sector more. 4 Likes 1 Share |

This is not just telling the doctors to be patient with you but to give a permanent solution and rest to the unrest among health workers.Let their be a clear cut demarcation between the doctors and other health workers. The almagametion of aggrieved health workers in the name of JOHESU to fight against the doctors should be looked into in all ramifications. From the days of Hippocrate, the father of modern medicine. The creation of other allied medical proffessions was to be a helping hands to the doctors. The conflict of interest of leadership tussle among health workers is born out from share greed, jealousy and a feriority complex syndrome. It pains to see a butterfly wanting to be called a bird. 3 Likes 1 Share |
