Gbolagun is a community with various inhabitants

ranging from the Elites, Illiterates, semi illiterates,

low income earners and petty traders. The road

that leads towards various streets Harbour ugly

looking potholes.During raining season, Gbolagun

main roads are usually flooded thus leaving it's

inhabitants to sought for other areas that could lead them to their various homes. The most popularly

and populated street in Gbolagun is Osanlu street

and the first household that catches one attention

in Osanlu is the Osinokuns.

The Osinokuns

They are called the councillor's. One cannot discuss

about various homes in Osanlu without paying

homage to this family. The name councillor was

derived as a result of the 1984 Kokomo local

government appointment being awarded to the

head of the family, Mr Osinokun.

A man in his sixties, a politician who has fallen

and risen on many occasions in the history of

politics.Mr Osinokun ishighly versed in political

history of Nigeria andcurrent affairs and had been

awarded various political appointments.
Mr Osinokun enjoys talking alot and whenever

he is not holding a political position.

He enjoys his daily activities by talking and

listening to street politicians and idle fellow in the

community. Mr Osinokun , a tall, lean ,dark skinned

man talks and boasts of his various acquaintances

with highly recognized political leaders in the

country."When I was with POP political party in 1990

I was their political adviser. It was then I realized

that there is money in politics". Beating his flat

chest in the midst of his fellow residents, " You

people knew how I lobby for constant electricity

supply for this community during Bola Ige's

regime.Sighing, "Nigeria of today is nothing to write

home about", he often laments.

At times , the fluctuation of Mr Osinokun's political

position affects the family's standard of

living.Although is bungalow appointment

appointment is moderately furnished yet it suffers

from terrible erosion during the rainy season most

especially when Gbolagun river overflew it's bank

and in effect, it pays homage to the Osinokun

apartment by dancing and settling itself in the

building and leaves most of their belongings spoilt

and unkempt. It is usually during these stormy

times that Mr Osinokun would remember that he

ought not to have sold his uncompleted apartment

or that his leaking roofing sheet needs to be

changed which leaves one wondering at times where

he had kept the money he derived from politics.
Mrs Lara Osinokun is a short dark skinned

woman,a fulltime housewife in her her mid 50's who

oftenlaments whenever the hard times times

sprangs up.

She loves gossiping with fellow housewives and

those that look up to her in the community as a

great mentor in in the history of motherhood. She

sometime says" Must I work? Heavens blessed me

rightfully with the kind of husband I have who had

been dancing to ma tunes all these years.May God

bless my female children with a husband like their

papa."while chatting with neighbors.

The Osinokun's are blessed with six children who

are mostly in mid thirties and and late

twenties. They all collaborate to celebrate New Year

and Xmas with their parent during Yuletide and

when they realized that its high time they

contributed to the renovation of their parent's

abode, they all contributed to the erection of the

highly built fence that surrounds their father's

compound so as to prevent it from being flooded by

erosion .Although the fence is as tall as the

popular Kirikiri prison fence in Ibadan yet Mr and

Mrs Osinokun prefers to sit outside the highly built

fence so as to see all that comes and goes within

Osanlu community.

Predicting when they might finally relocate to

another place place of abode might be a waste of

time because irrespective of their social or political

status they believe their livelihood begins, matures

and revolves around their semi ghetto environs.

Mama A toke _ The Petty Trader.

Mama Atoke is a typical illiterate who resides in

Osanlu. She is a petty trader whose rented

apartment is a stone throw from the Osinokun's.

She is a plump dark woman in her late 40's.She

owns a small kiosk where she sells biscuits, sweets

and other daily needs.Mama Atoke sells her wares

amidst sweet gossips and nicety which has no doubt

earned her a lot of patronage and neighborhood

friends.

Her settlement in Osanlu dates back to 2 decades

away and just like the Osinokun's she knows

virtually the history of each household in the street.

Mama Atoke is yet to be blessed with the fruit of

the womb as history had it that she raised Atoke her

sibling's daughter as hers which therfore got her the

name Iya Atoke.Mama Atoke has gone through

various medical and herbal procedures concerning

her barrenness but being a soggy being it could be

because she might have failed one way or the other

to adhere to medical precautions that was

associated with such procedures. Mama Atoke often

says proudly "it is not too late for me to beget a

child and if Baba Loke says no, edakun Atoke tito

lomo"(meaning Atoke is God sent already)

Mama Atoke opens her kiosk very early everyday

so as to sell biscuits and confectioneries to the little

kids who will buy from her on their way to school. Her

goods is worth less than twenty thousand and

sometimes the neatly stacked Bournvita and Milo

tins are usually empty but meant for objects of

display."Miolewa ku I ku okowo aoma Fi shock ara

won beyen naani o" (meaning I can't kill my self

because of money one will continue to patch one

thing with another) she often mused to herself

whenever customers found out that are beverage

tins are empty. As soon as she sees that the early

buyers had gone, she enjoys stretching her body on

the long wooden bench in her kiosk and snore away

her worries. Her sleeping state doesn't usually

prevent her from responding and attending to

customers since she is a light sleeper.

Giving customers additional goods or additional

balances is her major flaw ."Eh eh lataaro ni mo tin

bansi owo ti o fe balansi yii o kamapuro 1 tousan ti.

won na mowo funmi naa Po o jee. Accounti ee

yeeyan to ba ti 1 tousand bati poju".meaning( I

have been trying to get this account balanced since

morning and am yet to.To say the truth I received

too much of 1 thousands from customers and it

often leaves my account unbalanced).she says at

all times when it's time she closed for her kiosk for

the day.

Mama Atoke scarcely discuss her matters with

people but openly welcome sweet gossips. In most

cases, her customers often turn down her petty

talks by frowning at her sluggishness.

"Emabinu, suru Lee she sherii ti mio ba ro Amala yii

Dan daada okoo mi o ni jee"( please you need to be

patient if I i do not stir the yam flour very well my

husband will get nauseated and won't eat it).My

chores comes before my wares don't send me

packing.

Mama Atoke usually dole out bitter kola and kola

nut to the elderly ones from her goods and in turn

receives blessings most especially on the issue of her

barrenness. She also feeds area boys and idle

youths from her cookings. She is mostly hailed as

"Mama a won Boys".to be continued...

Atoke her adopted daughter who is in her mid

twenties has given birth to 3 kids.Atoke comes to her

mother's residence on weekends alongside Ayoka

her last born .A closer look at Ayoka reveals a

female child with tribal marks and incisions as a

result of several convulsion.Ayoka has a striking

resemblance to Segelulu,a funny cartoon that

mostly appears on the Editorial page of Nigeria

Tribune newspaper.
Mama Atoke's husband, Ayinla works at the

sawmill where he sells bamboo.Ayinla, a dubious

being that knocks out neighborhood housewives who

had tested his sexual prowess .Although Mama

Atoke mostly gets informed of his infidelity but

Ayinla always denies such accusation adamantly

and she in turn would proudly raise her shoulders

and eulogise him by saying "Ayinla Baba mi, Omo

Aresa Obirin Lee toju Nileyin, jewon o mo soo won o

Le daarin wa ru".Meaning (Ayinla my husband of

Aresa lineage your people are known for taking

good care of women .Let intruders talk, they won't

see the end of our relationship. Mama Atoke might

be sluggish but no one dares to step on her toes in

Osanlu or Gbolagun or else such person is ready to

face her wrath.
When occasions arise within and outside her

community Mama Atoke always put on Ankara

prints with shoe and bag that screams of weird

combination. Her headgear styles are often out of

place and with a jerk on her Buba one would see her

shaking her sagging buttocks that dances

unceremoniously behind her and as a result her

buttocks always scream for the purchase of a good

leggings or ladies tights for packaging.

Lawe- Legendary shoe maker.

Lawe is a well known shoemaker in Gbolagun.Lawe

resides in Osanlu while his workshop is located at a

strategic place in Gbolagun community where his

comrades and passersby pay him homage by

consistently calling out his Alias (Laweta).Lawe, an

average height dark skinned man in his early 40's

whose brown gap toothed was as a result of thuggery

and violent behaviors. He started his shoe making

career at a tender age in Gbolagun.Lawe's deep

voice and stern look has earned him a lot of respect

among his peers and cohabitants. He displays his

hand made sandals, shoes, flats and slippers on a

white worn out shoe rack outside his workshop and

whoever that mistakenly calls him a cobbler or bring

his/her shoes for polishing must be ready to face his

wrath as such person might likely end up picking

himself or his shoes from the thick muddy gutter

relaxing opposite his workshop."When will people

differentiate between a cobbler and shoemaker,

radarada(nonsense)he often says.

A thorough look at him will reveal that he

resembles the late American rapper Tupac if not for

the scars on his face. Whenever heated arguments

arise among the hoodlums of Gbolagun , Lawe is

usually called upon to settle such conflict because

of his popularity among them.

There was a time a communal work was being

carried out in Gbolagun and people were warned

strictly not to dump refuse inside Gbolagun river.

A particularwoman called Rebecca went to quickly

dump refusein the river and was about to make a

quick dash toher house when he was caught by Lawe

who usedkoboko on her until he reached her

husband'sdoorstep.Ojo, her husband could not utter
as he sawLawe unleashing terror on his

wife.Fumming with anger.

"Alaye wa shofe koyani abibawo, ooko iyawo e

daada Omo aye deti shekini otiranelowo"meaning

(Guy do you intend to fight me or what & since you

have decided not to discipline your wife I have

gladly done that on your behalf).Lawe said, as he

rolled his brown eyes.

Few minutes later ,it was alittle boy, Sunday that

saw Lawe defecating near Gbolagun river.

Lawe loves to entertain himself at a paraga joint

that is very close to his workshop on

weekends.During the Yuletide season, he often top

the list of Executive planners of Gbolagun carnival

which comes up annually on the 31st of December.

Few years ago, Lawe was accused of being a god

father to some armed robbers who constantly

disturbs the peace of Gbolagun but he was later

acquitted of the charges and thus enabled him to

gain more popularity.Lawe is the husband of the

fair skinned Jokotade.

Joko as she is fondly called by her husband owns a

hairdressing salon called 'Atunorise' which is not

far from her husband's shop.Joko loves displaying

bizzare hairstyles which are mostly emulated by her

peers since Joko the heart rob of Lawe rocks such

hairdo.Although she is an illiterate yet she

commands a huge respect in Gbolagun as a result of

her husband's personality. "I no no book but I day

chop my handwork as I no b lazy pesin. If a man

think say e fit use me do yang a, I go commot in

house danudanu.Na only person palm no fit betray

pesin"she boasted one day when she was

surrounded by her fellow hairdressers during a

weekly meeting. Any Man that tries to praise

Jokotade 's beauty or extend their acquaintances

by bringing up extra marital affairs are usually

hurriedly turned down since she knew that news

travel faster in Gbolagun .it would only be a matter

of days for such affairs to reach her husband's

earshot. She always end up saying "Alakoba, what

would become of my fine body in case Lawe heard

what this man his saying, he will panel beat my body

with beatings beyond recognition." Turning to her

apprentices she snapped her fingers to notify them

of their chores.

Redeke - The Trouble Maker

Among the popular landlords that are residing in

Osanlu is a man called Redeke. Redeke is a Yoruba

man of middle height with a strong physique who is

in early 60s.He has been a resident of Osanlu for

some decades .He is a retired police officer, a

thrift collector who is fiercely feared by his wives

and the entire street of Osanlu. He owns a bungalow

apartment which is excessively dominated by

numerous tenants that must not go beyond their

boundaries in the building.

Redeke has three wives and many children who

are mostly married. Redeke practices traditional

medicine alongside his thrift collecting business and

he usually announce to his customers that

whosoever that has spiritual problem ranging from

madness, epilepsy, irregular market sales,

barrenness, among others should come to him for

spiritual healing " talk of any disease, be it

spiritual or medical, bring such ailments to my

abode and such disease will regret using your body

as its host. Why am I called Redeke? As my name

implies, I see and know all "he often says.

His last wife Iya Amina whom he married seven

years back brought her two kids from her former

marriage with her.Redeke is a harsh man of strong

principles. He displays his grim attitude most

especially whenever a heated argument occur

amongst his tenants and children.Redeke ensures

that any of his children that is above 18 years of

age and who intends to continue living with him

must pay the exact rent fees he receives from his

tenants while his wives as well must pay for the

usage of the shops he built outside his compund. "

Komotojogun maa je ogbon.Kosi ounje ofe ni moscow

" meaning ( before a child rise to success I have

already risen, there is no free food in Moscow ) he

often says.

Redeke enjoys resting after the day's work on a

wooden decorated chair in his compound with a

bottle of schnapp liquor and bitter kola while his

best friend Julius will beckon on him whenever the

need arise to place their money on gamble at the

Baba Ijebu or pool center. They always enjoy

recalling several activities that took place when they

were still policemen. " Redeke, could you still recall

when the CP came to Alagolo station in 1985?" Of

course na,we had forgotten that he intend coming

over that day, he had even entered the station

before we could assemble ourselves together for his

welcome salute, i could still remember that I

hurriedly drop the meat that I was eating in the

canteen and quickly rubbed my smeared fingers on

my trouser " said Redeke."Our ASP went through

hell that day " Julius replied amidst laughter.Any

of Redeke's wife that is in charge of the day's meal

must carry her pot of soup inside Redeke's living

room where she will receive her share of the meal

from Redeke who keeps the rest of the stew in his

room.

On a fateful afternoon, Redeke came back from

his thrift collecting business and sent his wives

packing, claiming that they have all became

possessed of witchcraft. Iya Amina his last wife who

came for visitation in the community was beaten to

a pulp and stripped naked by Redeke who had

strictly warned his wives not to show their faces

within his vicinity again. It was Alhaji Shittu ,a

fellow landlord that saved Iya Amina from being

nearly killed that day. Hence, none of his wife

dares to come for visitation in Osanlu again.

It is only Bingo his Dog that keeps him company at

home whenever he is not attending to customer who

came for spiritual assistance.

The Aderopos

Mr Aderopo owns a four bedroom flat that had

been built in Osanlu some decades away .

Mr Aderopo works as a casual staff at Jagu&Sons

Ltd in Lagos. He comes to Osanlu every month to

check on the well being of his family. He took his

children one after the other to his rented

apartment in Lagos for proper monitoring as a

result of his wife's infidelity.Mr Aderopo is a

responsible and caring man in the field of

fatherhood who ensures that his family's monthly

allowance and upkeep are catered for."Here is the

allowance for this month. Do not hesitate to inform

me if you ran out of cash, ok? " "of course i will let

you know if the need be and I hope my coca cola

allowance has been added to the cash."said Mama

Ope.
Mrs Aderopo mostly known as Mama Ope is a

housewife in her mid 40's .She started as a

photographer in Osanlu but later dumped it for

petty trading inside her husband's house. She

usually claims that she was not born to do business

but to give pleasure to men.Men that know the nitty

gritty of sexual pleasure and since her husband

often come at the end of the month, she has all the

time to satisfy her lovers who enjoy themselves in

the company of her big bossom.

At a particular time, she was caught having an

affair with Bade, a guy that lives in the

neighborhood.Bade is a truck driver who comes to

his residence on weekends to enjoy the life the semi

ghetto Osanlu street offers.

Mama Ope was able to seduce Bade with her

curvaceous body and thus led to an affair between

them. One day, Bade ' s girlfriend Tosin came to visit

him and unknowingly, Bade had left the front door

ajar.Hearing a sound in the bedroom,Tosin quietly

opened the door and found Mama Ope wriggling

under Bade.Tosin hurriedly ran out and let the cat

out of the bag by summoning neighbours to her aid .

Maintaining a stoic expression,Mama Ope lazily

came out of Bade ' s house and claimed that she

went to borrow a particular Yoruba movie, when her

neighbors started abusing her.

The issue was later brought before Osanlu

Landlords association weekend meetings where Mr

Aderopo was later invited and informed of his

wife's act."Do you realize Baba Ope that your wife

has drag your name and entire household into mud

by having an extra marital affair with a tenant in

the neighborhood?" said Mr Osinokun. "we shall

leave you to deal with your wife as u deem fit but

the tenant, Bade must pack out of thiscommunity",

Redeke supplied furiously.

Clearing his voice, Mr Aderopo said thank u all

for being here, but since i didnt see my wife with my

naked eyes nor caught her while engaging in the

act, i believe she must have been misjudged as she

claimed and as for Bade, i bear no grudge against

him, whatsoever punishment that has been slated

for him is no concern of mine. I trust my wife and if

you will excuse me I need to start preparing for my

journey against tomorrow", he said."You are not

man enough Baba Ope if it were to be me, her head

and that nuisance ' s own will be in Ogun 's shrine by

now".shifting uncomfortably in his seat ,emi

funrarami mioraye osi, said Redeke.

Mr Aderopo left the meeting in annoyance and

assured himself that since he seldoms stay with his

family in Osanlu, it could be deduced that most of

the landlords wanted to sleep with his wife who had

refused to have any extra marital affair with

them." I knew my husband would be solidly behind

me.Do they expect him to send me out of his house?

" she boasted shamelessly among her friends.

Mama Ope sometimes allow her male lovers to pass

the night in her husband's house.Often, she collects

a bottle of beer and 500 naira from guys that are

willing to date her last born, Ronke, a 15 year old

girl. "Be gentle with my daughter o, i hope you

realize that she is still a young girl and you Ronke,

make sure you enjoy yourself to your fill ".

It was Mama Atoke that made life miserable for

Mama Ope in the community when she learnt that

her husband, Ayinla was caught with Mama Ope in a

hotel.Mama Atoke ensured that no petty trader

within the street sells daily needs to Mama Ope.

" Seri Omobinrin yen Aja ti gbe ido re je.Baba

Atoke o ri eyan mi ladugbo afi ohun.Mosesebere

pelu reni nibiti ma bafade, ma dana sun idi re ni "

( That woman is so promiscuous, i wonder what

fascinates my husband towards her. In fact i have

just started with her, i will definitely be the one to

set her ass ablaze ) said Mama Atoke while

attending to a customer.

When Mr Aderopo couldn't bear the insult and

embarrassment his wife brings upon the family, he

halted his monthly visit.Hence, it is Mama Ope that

goes to Lagos for visitings every 2 months.

Redeke, Mama Atoke and his husband Ayinla, The Osinokuns, Aderopo and co, waiting to see more...

So far, it is still making sense, I guess I'm beginning to picture Gbolagun now.
Lest I forget, I love the introduction of the local dialect (Yoruba), I think it is cool
