If Darmian went to gum Ericksen, Dele Alli would have been forced to level with Blind. In that way, he wouldn't have been ahead of Blind when Ericksen and Darmian chased after the ball.

Try to see the video of this goal. Blind had no chance of catching up with Dele Alli, except if he had the speed of Valencia or Gareth Bale.
