While some food could be indigenous to our nationality, we also have to accept the fact that these foods irritate people from other parts of the world. Although we choose these food types over modern foods, we eat these foods with relish. Not only do we find dishes like these satisfactory, we also go to any extent trying to get them even though we are on foreign soil. It is intriguing that the same way we twist and turn our noses at other people’s foods, the same is done to us. In reality, there are certain foods people eat in this part of the continent that are really irritating. Touching these food types is hard enough, seeing people eat them is shocking. As much as I could, I am trying to be unbiased so I do not get whipped by the people who eat some of these foods. Check out some of the foods Nigerians eat that disgusts people from other parts of the world: 1. Insects Insects eaten by Nigerians This is really irritating; it takes serious courage seeing insects of different types and sizes land on someone’s skin. Discovering people actually roast and boil these insects and garnish some foods with them is shocking. Roasted termites Cricket is eaten wildly by many people in Nigeria. They are roasted and snacked on from time to time. Another insect people eat is the big flying termite. These are seen during rainy season and are trapped by lighting up a bulb. The bulb or fluorescent attracts the insects and they fall on the ground. These insects are called ‘Esunsun’ or ‘Shinge’ and are spiced according to individual preferences. Eeeewwwwww. 2. Snakes Roasted snakes in sticks Seeing the creepy reptiles is enough to freak some people out. Nigerians actually enjoy killing these organisms and eating them. Some describe the flesh as being close to fishes. Imagining the slithering movement of this reptile would make many people choke on the flesh. Meanwhile, this is some people’s ‘suya’. Enjoy. 3. Rice and Okra Okra and rice Rice is eaten by most people in Nigeria; however, Nigerians have a way of combining foods. These foods become so irritating at the long run. Okra is known as draw soup to many. Yet some people prefer to mix rice and okra together. No matter how well dressed the food is, seeing the mixture would make many people throw up. For some people, it is rice and ‘Ewedu’. 4. Blood meal Blood in a bowl Some people in Nigeria also eat blood meal. Blood meal is made from boiling blood to a point where it coagulates. The shocking thing however is one can never be sure of the source of the blood. It is inhuman that we have to kill domestic animals we raised by ourselves but having to drink their blood is off-point. 5. Frogs Roasted frogs Seeing the big eyed amphibian is enough to make some people have goose pimples all over their bodies. However, seeing these animals dried, roasted and hawked about is irritating. People eat them openly and even drink the cassava flake ‘garri’ with these frogs. There are certain animals that would make one freak out, running into a frog is definitely one of them. 1 Share

Most of those things mentioned are not eaten by Nigerians alone. Blood is also a delicacy in parts of Europe while frogs, snakes etc are eaten in Asia too. Frog legs is a delicacy eaten in France, Italy and China. The one food I can and hope never to be forced to try is Balut Call that disgusting and I will stand by you.

Ugh, the smell of locus beans... I can cook anything for my husband, but that smell is awful! Anytime we are home visiting family, i also make sure I know for sure what meat is in my food, no big rat (forgot it's name, sorry!) On the other hand, the fruit is so fresh, in the usa, our fruit is picked unripe, and allowed to somewhat ripen in the store before we bring it home, tastes awful, and there is no palm wine here, miss that!! |
