1. Don't panic
2. Remove the gear from drive to neutral, the car's speed will start decreasing.
3. Ensure you are holding the steering firmly and be focused to navigate safely.
4. You may have to place your hand on the horn continuously in case we have some sluggish drivers at your front who have the space to clear off for you to move.
5. You may also have to put on your hazard light.

May God help us all to remember all these things, cos if it dare happens our mind will not even be close to put all these in practice.

Doing dat mean putting ur car in a free running state. U totally have no control on the Engine.

Though the driver might be in a confused state, but D best option is to use "Engine Breaking" - Lower ur gear from D to L1 or 1 as D case may be.
Dats why its nice to understand how manual car operates.

dont think you can do anything about automatic. even the manual it has to be on a highway or relatively free way for you to maneuver the speed with the gear . and if you suddenly change from say 5 to 1 because you want to stop or slow so sporadically, it can be very dangerous.

For auto if you are not on speed you can match the break down like that and put the Gear to pack I have try this before but I can't say if you are on speed

Very good thread. I meant to ask the same question. Just yesterday, a bus full of people suffered a brake failure. It wasnt funny at all. Thank God there was traffic and the bus was not on speed. See people jumping out of the bus. The driver had to move to the parking lane and drove towards a bridge. The bus stopped as it was ascending the bridge. Except for the people who jumped out, everyone else was fine.

My own case, I begin dey pump d useless brake like madman, activate handbrake, activate gear one! Wetin stop d car na bush o! I just take style comot one tyre for road come dey use d bush as a kind of stopper till I jam better tree stump! Na dat day I believe say brain pass computer!

Just try n keep calm, and tink outside d box! Forget abt not damaging d car, even sidesweeping a culvert or road median na viable option! A damaged car beats dead pple!

No be all brake failure dey give warning o!

Just in case, ordinary water is a very good temporary brake fluid! U can also trace d leak n seal/block it if u can.

Experienced this shait 31st August last year while descending a gentle slope. I couldn't even think straight, just thinking about my kids in the car with me and the bike men driving anyhow. The car eventually hit three of them and the fourth one actually stopped the car from its free fall. My worst fear then was that I had killed someone.

Thank God for His mercy, my children and I came out unscathed, bike men sustained minor injuries(surprising, considering the impact). That's one experience I can't forget in a hurry.

Are you sure you understand the question? The brake don fail and you are still talking about stepping on it. Brake failure is different from tyre problems.

But in my own car, Hyundai Elantra 2013 model, I don't have the L1 or 1 on the gear. What I have is the 'horse drive'. When it's all it. The dashboard will be showing gear engagement in numbers as if its manual.

All of you are either not drivers or you are saying something else. Do you remember that most times you apply the brake pedal when you need it? So why are you all saying "hold steering and coast down", etc. You are most likely to hit something if your brake fails especially in our environment where roads are cramped up.

for manual car, quickly aply clutch,then engage gear1, "gradualy" releasing ur clutch pedal, at this point, the car aceleration reduces drastically till the car stops depending on road terain. As for Automatic transmission Gear! Hmmmmmm well,depending on ur speed,that's why they said speed kills! If ur speed is minimal, you can make use of Hand brake,but with full speed? That's OCHOLI minister oooh. My advice is always believe that ur brake can fail aat anytime so that u can always reduce ur speed. Note that over speeding=brake failure! When ur speed is at maximum level, even active brake system will not Respond again, any attemp you do will no longer obey you! Only Steering will decide what type of crash it want so the best is ti drive carefully. Brake failure is Titanic experience my brother! Don't pray for it

You don't drive more than 40km/h in a crowded road. At that speed, if you keep your cool, you can still stop the car with little or no damage done to you or other road users.

What if you are on a bridge. May we not see bad thing. If your brake fails just aim for the trunk of a small car. The insurance will tke care of that. Remember it's a decision that you must take within the second or else it could be the difference between life and death.

Nobody prepares or expects break failure but it's good to know because shit happens. As for driving with speed with gutters and road traffic I guess you'll not be at 100km/h in places like that.

In addition, if you are a driver, trust your pastor to pray for you but learn the basics of avoiding accidents. I've seen a brand new car with ABS have break failure. It's not the guy's village people that wanted to kill him. It was factory error and Honda replaced the car for him.

As a first option it's very very bad. What if you kill the driver of the so called small car. Or are you going to call or send text to the driver that you are about to hit him? Many road accident victims die out of shock and not necessarily bodily harm.

If you suggest hitting a tree or electric pole it's better than hitting a small car. But in the principles of levers and gears, a vehicle stops faster if there is no acceleration while engaged in motion in low gears. All motor vehicles are designed that way.

If u Hv been driving car...u will knw There are sum situation where u will b in speed not top speed,only Cuz the road is clear only for to round off bending n see cars lining up ahead of you..

Evn in a road Dat is usually clear u culd b shock to see cars lining up ahead of you...why police usual money collection ahead...in Nigeria where any where can b police check point...

I read all that Hv been posted of brake failure.. no one has a perfect answer...

Cuz I knw sum state has open gutter both side,some state road many lane,going opposite direction....

I feel if ur in Nigeria u will knw Wat am saying...
