Lvg signed him with the hope of signing a winger and since Di Maria has played as a winger in most of his career, I don't see why it would be wrong for Lvg to give him a try. Blackett didn't even have any, it was only in the pre-season he looked good and even then, he made plenty of mistake like in the AS Roma game. Mcnair on the other hand only had 1 good game where he dominated Lukaku in the air in the Everton game and it didn't take 2-3 games before we realised how out of depth he is!
Hence, comparing these players to Rashford, Blind, Lingard, Martial who's had plenty of games and are still showing their quality is quite absurd and Stup!d!

Atleast when he turned over possession on the wing, it wouldn't hurt us directly as opposed to the midfield which is quite average in the first place and can't afford further liability. Apart from the fact that Di Maria's bottom level is so awful, this was a player who had his head already in Psg.

My thoughts.
As a long serving fan it is difficult to take what's been going on at a club that's been used to success over the best part of nearly three decades.
The thought was that van Gaal, respected across Europe for his achievements, would add a new dimension to our style of play.
He made some limited progress in his first season, noting that we had a shocker of a season under David Moyes, but in general he has underwhelmed and underperformed in virtually all areas.
His style of play does not suit the personnel on ground, yet he persists with whatever it is he is calls his philosophy.
He continually plays guys out of position. A few have worked (Blind), but overall it reached alarmingly deluded proportions at Tottenham. Playing Martial wide left, Young as striker, Mata wide and Lingard as number 10 only gives one the impression of him (van Gaal) as being confused.
We might say he gave chances to youth, but did he really have a choice? Half the squad were out injured, and if it were not for Rooney being injured we might never have have known how good Rashford was. For me, he hasn't covered himself in much glory when you think that some of his purchase flopped so spectacularly that we United fans have no business trying to justify any of them.

On the basis of the above, LvG cannot complain if he is relieved of his job in the summer.A 4th placed finish and an unlikely FA Cup win will not salvage the damage of the season that had so much expectations. He has failed to garner any confidence in even his most ardent supporters, and keeps putting off the evil day with one unexpected result or the other. While it is a bit unfair to be talking about his successor while the season has progressed, van Gaal can rail at the media for all he likes. The media didn't cause him to spend money on players he can't get anything meaningful from, neither did they conjure up the insipid performances and embarrassments he has served us over the course of the season. The media didn't force him to make ridiculous tactical and technical gaffes as well, and he would do best to avoid questions about his future and accept the blame for this mishap of a season. He brought all of this on himself and has no one but himself to blame.

I see peeps here trying to define the actual sum spent on players. It's not really the main issue for me. What is is that he got players that can't and shouldn't be wearing a United shirt,even for an Instagram or snapchat post. Those players have been shown up on occasion and for me, I think that is the worrying thing. We have gotten to the point where we can't get to buy the kind of players that we truly desire because of the bizarre set of circumstances we find ourselves in: in danger of missing out on Champions League football for e second time in 3 seasons. So no matter how we try, we cannot avoid the mediocre players going for astonishingly incredible fees. And so for me, whoever comes in faces a dilemma of trying to attract players to a side that won't be playing top flight European football without getting mercenaries who are simply looking for a payout. Just like the DiMaria fiasco.

By and large, Bastian, Rojo, Schneiderlin, Darmian and perhaps the biggest name Depay have all failed woefully. These guys were purchased by van Gaal himself. Herrera has not covered himself in glory but it can be argued that he has provided some form of consistency over the afore mentioned players. Whomever takes over from van Gaal (if there is a successor in place) needs to decide what to do with these dead woods consuming space, along with under performers like Mata, even the usually reliable Carrick, and Fellaini.

There may be a chance to re-assess the ones who have shown promise like Rashford, Fosu-Mensah, Lingard andMartial.

When you think that United do not have a player who has double-digit goal tally in the league, it makes you wonder how far we've fallen off. Trust me, I've seen United sides from Atkinson, and I can tell you that though we became cup specialists under him, his side still played breath-taking football under him.

To be fair to Schneiderlin, he's a box-to-box midfielder deployed as a holding midfielder. He hasn't been able to hold down the midfield as much as we had hoped he would.
I have my reservations about Mourinho. As great as he is he comes with baggage that might come back to haunt us. That isn't to say he isn't qualified.

Martial is still young and has lots of time to improve, if he keeps to the present track he's on right now he will be something else.
For me van Gaal is even inhibiting him playing hide wide left instead of harnessing his pace down the middle.
