The All Progressives Congress, APC, Caucus in the House of Representatives said it is determined to push ahead with the directive given to it by the party leadership to block all legislative proposals emanating from the presidency to protest what it called impunity of the Nigeria Police in Rivers State.
The Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, who stated this on Monday, said the party caucus would meet on Tuesday morning ahead of resumption of the plenary session to study the directive and decide on how to go about complying with it.
The APC had directed its members in the two chambers of the National Assembly to block all legislative proposals, including the 2014 Budget and confirmation of the ministerial appointees and service chiefs sent by President Goodluck Jonathan, to protest the role of the police in the lingering crisis in Rivers State.
The opposition, which gave the directive during its National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting in Abuja on Thursday, has since come under heavy criticisms from other parties and individuals, who accused it of toying with the lives of Nigerians.
Among the parties that condemned the directive are the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and Labour Party, LP.
The APC leadership also defended its action, saying it had started to yield fruit as its member and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, attended a rally in Ogoni axis of the state unmolested, last Saturday.
Some other rallies organised in Rivers State by residents to declare support for the governor had been disrupted by the police with a serving senator allegedly shot in one of the attacks.
Ahead of the resumption of the lower chamber on Tuesday, Mr. Gbajabiamila said it would meet to study the directive and the approach to adopt, insisting that it was a patriotic directive which the Caucus would comply with.
“We see a basis for complying with the directive,” Mr. Gbajabiamila told PREMIUM TIMES on Monday night. “It is legitimate to call the government of the day to order. Those who are criticising it are PDP apologists. They don’t see what we see. We’re ready because this is a new beginning. We will see how it goes.
“I cannot tell now how we are going to do it, but we will meet to decide on how to go about it tomorrow. I mean APC Caucus will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) morning and decide what happens next. We will sit down and we will review the situation as we go along.”
The lawmaker expressed disappointment with those criticising the APC for issuing the directive to its lawmakers, describing them as “hypocrites.”
He expressed regret that some Nigerians always see the actions of the party as illegal, noting that whenever it was at the receiving end, nobody bothered to say anything.
According to him, “We have listened to those people. APGA and LP that are criticising the directive are all PDP apologists. When APC does anything people tend to see it as illegal.”
“When Lagos State funds were seized by the PDP federal government, even when the Supreme Court had ruled on it, nobody said anything. Does PDP obey court rules? The lives of 18 million people were at stake. That is hypocrisy of the highest order.
“Now, they are talking budget and how it will affect about Nigerians. You look at what is happening in Rivers State. Is the budget more important than the lives of Nigerians there? The life of one Nigerian is more important than the budget.
Mr. Gbajabiamila, who represents Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State, said the APC Caucus was not worried about the coalition the PDP had formed with APGA and LP to frustrate its plan to carry out the directive from its leadership, saying with its numerical strength the APC would succeed.
He said, “In any case, I learnt PDP Caucus met today and formed a coalition with APGA, Labour Party, and other smaller parties. But it is simple. We are not worried at all. They (APGA and LP) are PDP apologists. That is not new. It wasn’t like they were voting for us. We’re superior in number.”
He said the APC was not worried about the commencement of the screening of the service chiefs by the Senate, as it could frustrate their confirmation on the floor of the House.
He said, “There is nothing wrong with screening because at the end of the day they will bring it to the floor for approval,” he said. “I don’t see any problem there. That is not to say we will not take the interest of the country into consideration. We will review the situation as we go along.”

Gbajabiamila is only smart as a tool to be used by Tinubu. See Karma. The same bigot accused Fayose of economic sabotage, this one he did in 2014 is called what.

Cursed be any APC that says PDP was Nigeria's problem for 16years.

Now, everyone can see that there is some truth in allegations levied by Fayose in his reply to the APC chairman. In this light, if the APC could engage in such then, then what makes the action of the Governor treasonous. The political commentary and actions of our legislature must be independent, so also our state governments. That's what the civilized worlds call DEMOCRACY.

Projects meant for the south are expunged from the budget and the funds diverted to vague projects in the north. Instead of southern opposition senators to push for this injustice to be instantly reversed and the budget passed, they rather think this is the most suitable time and scenario to apply the laws of karma by fighting Buhari.... This is a bizarre case of 'Iberiberism.'

Project you claimed expunged, was never in the budget Buhari presented, the executive wants to cause confusion, which is what they've done. although the whole saga is a win-win for the south

You've started your beautiful nonsense again. Why is Apc DNA so compatible with yours. A thread was created reminding Nigerians how Gbajabiamila and APC tried fruitlessly to frustrate the passage of 2014 budget and you're here talking jazz about Calabar-Lagos rail project which was never in the budget proposal sent to the NA by Buhari. Why are you so mischievous in character? If the rail project was so dear to Buhari why was it not included in the initial budget proposal? Stop spreading falsehood on Nairaland.

Whether the project was in the first or the second or the third version, the fact is that the president is interested in having this project done, hence he withheld his assent. But strangely, instead of southern senators supporting this, they seem to prefer the political fight with the president, how can any southern senators possibly think this budget issue is a good ground to pick a fight with the president?.. For crying out loud, who does that?

Let us be honest with ourselves, assuming this was in the time of GEJ when the northerners were still in opposition, do you think northern senators would be silly enough to use a case like this to fight the president (whose argument favours the north)?... We claim to be educated and enlightened in the south but we really need to grow up and understand when to and when not to play politics.

Mr Man I am not spreading any falsehood, it doesnt matter if the project was put in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or ghost budget. The fact is that Buhari refused to sign the budget because certain projects meant to benefit southern Nigeria were removed by his brothers and the funds channelled to the north. On this case, Buhari's stance clearly favours the south and I find it very strange and silly that any southerner would choose this occasion to want to fight against Buhari.

I also find it very strange that any southerner would choose this particular case to celebrate or glorify anyone fighting Buhari as is being done on this thread. You guys should grow up out of your political oblivion, it is not in every case you must have to play politics.

If the president is interested in having the project done, why didn't he include it in the budget he presented himself to the NASS? Why was the project an after thought?

The point is that buhari intends to carry out this project and he has further indicated his interest by refusing to assent to the budget until the project is re-included. I don't understand what you intend to achieve with these barrage of pointless questions except for just an inordinate desire to turn everything to a political fight even in situations where it hurts you.

You're the one who has certainly chosen not to grow up going by series of myopia and deceits displayed when positing your arguments on Nairaland. Anyway, direct your advice on when not to play politics (with everything) to Lai Mohammed and APC. They established the norm of playing politics with even the blood of Nigerians. If you're short of memory, pick your phone and google APC press statements in the last two years.

At least they were not dumb enough to play the kind of political game where they would be the sole losers. That is where the difference lies, just in case you are to challenged to see that.

Today Lai Mohammed's party is sitting tight at Aso rock and Lai himself sits comfortably as the honourable minister of education. You claim you want to copy Lai's style of politicking but here you are, supporting some northern appropriation committee members who cancelled developmental projects in the south and moved the funds to the north; in your peculiar wisdom, opposition politics simply means standing against whatever Buhari says or stands for, even when it obviously doesnt favour you. Such impeccable wisdom!

This thread brings to light the brand of politics played by the APC. Yet some persons just want us to back them. It's a No! for me.

Again, I insist Fayose is on point. Besides his letter was hinged on Economic prudence.

The difference between you and me is that you are easily deceived which is quite unfortunate. I keep wondering why a project as important as the Calabar-Lagos rail line is considered not important to be included in the Appropriation Act prepared and submitted by the president himself.

No! on the contrary, you are the one who is being too smart for your self and your over-smartness is negatively eroding your objectivity. The freaking fact is that Buhari wants this project to go on and while you are trying to be too smart for yourself in your hatred for Buhari, you are questioning his sincerity and in the process, pitching your tents with the very people who cancelled the project. In other words, you are letting your hatred and distrust for Buhari get the better part of your reasoning here. Cut if off!
