let us say the total amount with A is #900 plus the 100 debt owed to him =#1000, now 500 was stolen, meaning he will be left with #400 cash in hand and #100 debt owed to him. the debtor paid his #100 debt, meaning A now has #500 cash in hand and #0 debtor. #1000-#500= #500, meaning he made a loss of #500.

PS: The fact that the #500 was stolen by his debtor is not relevant, it could have been stolen by anybody. Also, the #400 change is not a loss because he collected #500 in return, meaning the #500 paid to him contained the #400 naira change and the debtors #100 debt.
