The feasible alternative for PHCN seem to be solar energy as its renewable through sunlight, more light should be thrown on the use of solar energy rather than people posting the use of Inverters to make money at the expense of others.

Here's a very rough breakdown

1,500w inverter (taking pf as 0.8, 1500÷ 0.8= 1.875kva) (without inbuilt charger)= 10k
2 pieces of 200ah batteries at 70k= 140k
2 pieces of 250w solar panels at 50k= 100k
20a-60a charge controller 40k
Cables 1k per yard
Racks and other miscellaneous = 20k
Total= 310k

I have a setup that cost 120k, tho runtime time is short

You and I both know the whole solar panel ish is not so true,fine it works for some but the same time its rubbish for some...inverters no matter powerful need electricity either from Nepa or a gen to charge them plus the battery lifespan is also another issue to consider,I've had numerous battery issues,the latest was when one of them exploded,the inverter is good but lets stop painting it as an alternative to generators or Nepa outrightly

Your batteries were either poorly maintained due to improper charging or they were nnot good batteries from. Next time try and get good batteries from a reliable source.

Do not mislead people with substandard inverter cos of cost that they'll surely regret and I know cos I have used that mercury inverter and I still have it somewhere in my house. by virtue of my work experience, i have worked with multiple variants of these inverters for different facilities [office, . the mopower is no different. the batteries go in two years.

all you are doing is FUD. in my experience, they are all the same. the diference is that the sellers of mopower, luminous sukam and the likes are way too greedy and desperate to make a killing off nigerians.

i bought a i.4 kba sukam inverter some years back. 35k, csh and carry . it blew once. when i got it fixed, a fuse was replaced. this fuse was not locally avaialble, so from then on i was constantly rewiring the inverter. after i got tired of this i switched to another model , a so called pure sine wave that went bad the very day i bought it.

i saw this same sukam at luminous shop for over 150,000 last year. i just shook my head. the greed of nigerians.

see as people on this thread are calling biig big prices for batteries. i bought 200Ah batteries from coscharis in febuary for 50k. BUY DRECT FROM COSCHARIS PERSONALLY . don't let any hustler cheat you. batteries are actually the worst part of the inverter setup because greedy nigerians can do anything. just clean a battery and it may as well be new.

as for maintenance, ideally battries should be kept at 22-23 degree celcsius. [air conditioned] but that wont happen for a domestic user . so thats just a cop out/quick excuse for a dubious seller whose batteries went bad.

In a month I normally use fuel worth N8000 to power my generator anytime there's power outage but since I bought my inverter more than a year ago, I spend averagely N500 per month. Yes..N500 averagely as I could go for 3months sometimes without putting on my gen. This backup system has been very helpful especially now that there is poor mains supply and fuel scarcity with exorbitant price. Those of you complaining of excessing estimated bill, you can get value for the bills you pay if you have a backup system since you'll massively utilize the mains when it is available provided you can have light at least once in two days.
Below is my 1.5kva sine wave inverter and 4batteries system.
Show us pics of your backup system and tell us how much you save from this arrangement per month.

It is true what u have said. But one key thing is the supply of NEPA light once in two days, becaus its the NEPA light that can effectively charge the batteries or u need a big gen like minimum 5kva to charge it. Also note that the money u save now will be used to buy batteries when they go bad.

Sorry but it doesn't seem to pan out well as you have described. I might be wrong but don't you think this same scenario plays out when using Generator and NEPA (abi wat's it called thesedays ) ...the current from both source must not flow together within the same circuitry? Maybe if you say connecting the flow from the solar panel and the batteries in parallel to the appliance that should aggregate the current to it. Then also, you need to connect the solar panel to the battery to charge it looks feasible though. Thanks all the same.

Well, the splitting is done automatically so to speak.

The best way i can describe it is like having T-branch pipe with flows from the bottom to the left and right and from the left to the right.




In the T-branch pipe above, lets say your inverter is requesting current on the branch on the right (right upper part of the T), your batteries are sending in current from the branch on the left(left upper part of the T) and your solar panels are sending in current from the branch at the bottom (tail of the T).

Now, when the solar current (like water) comes in from the branch at the bottom, it's tendency is to flow into the battery branch on the left to charge the batteries.

Now once you load your inverter, the inverter makes a request for current from the battery, but since current is already flowing in from the solar panel at the bottom branch, the inverter makes use of this current flowing in from the bottom with whatever additional current from the left branch (battery) that it needs to complete it's current request.

So if your inverter on the right side requests for 10amps and your solar is already flowing in 2 amps from the bottom pipe into the inverter, your batteries would need to flow the remaining 8amps into the right side. The so called switching is based on the need of the inverter. If the inverter needs current, it will take it first from solar panels then the rest from the battery.

obviously this is an over simplification.

If you don't continually drain your batteries to nought, it will last more years so long as you are able to get good ones to start with

Well, inverters have minimum voltage at which they cut off power supply, so its not possible to drain it to nought. Assuming If you have an inverter of the strenght of a truck but use it to carry load of one Laptop then its a waste of money and space. The average life span of the batteries is 2yrs. The storage capacity of the batteries drop over time, just like ur phone, rechargeable torch, car batteries e.t.c they are all the same.

Very true. I would support adding of batteries in modular manner to sustain your power needs but then adding a new battery to a running system would make it an imbalanced arrangement. One battery will surely go bad before the other and the cycle continues. Best you get your present and future power needs right before embarking on this venture.

You are talking about Israel. The Israelis have that arrangement incase they are cut offf from the grid, so that they can always have access to information if the Palestinians and other enemies blow up their power supply. In Nigeria we know our enemies...

Why condemn his setup? He's not asked anyone to bring money or has he? Nor has he suggested any vendor. Besides all these, you don't even know his setup arrangement at home. You may own an inverter but have it wrongly connected which has now given you a wrong impression about the whole system. Please let us all learn and do the right thing instead of condemning others.

in my opinion, your best value for money is a mercury inverter. 2.5kva is 25,000. buy direct from coscharis and you get a 1 year warranty.

its modified sine wave, which means some fans may hum when running . none of the ones in my house do.
i am also recommending it because 25k is far easier to shrug off than 150k.

after you buy your mopower inverter the english will start. oh, it needs a stabilizer; oh you cannot use it with a generator sized less than so and so

nigerians are very lousy where after sales support is concerned.
