That mercury inverter is good but has poor charging that will ruin your batteries in 6 months. Do not mislead people with substandard inverter cos of cost that they'll surely regret and I know cos I have used that mercury inverter and I still have it somewhere in my house. Had to buy this mopower when my batteries start discharging too quickly and my batteries were restored

What did you use to restore your batteries. My batteries are draining too.

You and I both know the whole solar panel ish is not so true, fine it works for some but the same time its rubbish for some...inverters no matter powerful need electricity either from Nepa or a gen to charge them plus the battery lifespan is also another issue to consider,I've had numerous battery issues, the latest was when one of them exploded, the inverter is good but lets stop painting it as an alternative to generators or Nepa outrightly

I don't know why you are pessimistic. At least I can share my bitter experience with inverters because I have used over 5. I even currently have a 5kva inverter laying idle. I have a solar panel and I am guaranteed of light once the sun is up. My only issue is with my batteries which have caused me pains like previous inverters used. I don't want to change them yet because I am tired.

If I don't put on some much load on my inverter and with my weak 4 batteries I am guaranteed of 24 hours power supply plus solar power. If you don't load your inverter and you have good batteries, I believe it can last you better.

Recall, he has a 1.5kva and uses four 200amp batteries. I believe it should last him for 3 days if the batteries are fully charged and working well. Except he overloads the inverter.

What quota have you contribute to the development of Nigeria? Do you even pay tax? If you can't afford solar system why not avoid the thread than discouraging others? A typical Nigerian youth that waits for government for everything, youths that enjoys constituting nuisance than looking for solutions, probably tyou have nothing tangible to do with light, other than charging your phones and other pleasures that contribute nothing to the society, alternative power supply is never a bad option and some gullible readers were to give you likes, was expecting you would bring up another alternative but was surprised to see a typical and average, lazy Nigerian youth who are loud but empty. Though solar power isn't new but creating a positive awareness on it through these forum at these particular period when as a country we are experiencing epileptic power supply is a welcome idea.

#seriously dude... you think I'm lazy? I laugh in Chinese.
Only those with brain understand my words..
Go get yourself one inverter if you need one. And FYI I don't do government nothing they can offer me that I can offer them twice. and my tax goes to the motherless home, the beggars on the street, the sick in the hospital not your government. till the day I die my dine ain't going to those thieves you call government .

It'll be a crime if I don't comment on this topic.

I run a 247 service, and I tell you without the inverter. at least 12 employees will be out of jobs and I don't think I can take this crap of this country. I will probably have found my way out.

No light for days, and weeks... how do businesses survive? It's really crazy.

I buy fuel when the light goes critical. like no light for like 3 days... I thank God for them. Oh, also, I had to do a lightening protector, cos, one time last year, thunder struck it out... as I stay at the topmost place around...

But I don't do all this indian or chinko inverter crap. I tried them once, I knew it wasn't for me. From basic knowledge their charging amps are pretty low.... hence it can take them 4x to charge compared to standard inverters like xantrex, tripple lite or outback.

I bought a used outback inverter, in fact, I bought 2units... with 6 200AH batteries...

And it's like magic. We use it all day at work... all day... and it charges at night... or even for a couple of hours... our Gen dey gather dust.. steady...

How do I get any of the products you mentioned? Please do assist me to a link or contact, where I can get one. Big ups.

The panels output in DC. So that is used to charge up the batteries first and then you get an AC output from the inverter. I believe there are some inverter designs that allow you to get an AC output from the inverter which is supplied by the panels. However, this will most likely leave you with only a "trickle" charge rate on the batteries. That will be slower, and you may not get the full benefits from the system.

bigtt76:
Ok but it could still mean the company connected the Solar panels to your battery charger direct and supplied the house from the battery through the inverter.

Ideally it would be best if your house I s supplied during the day from the solar panels and the battery charged through this route while at night the battery supplies the house. So it means your battery discharges less than it would if connected otherwise.

Some appliances such as fridge or freezer can work during the day on solar and turned off at night to power other appliances which are night use so power can be optimized correctly.

Looking forward to the diagram. I would be very grateful.

I agree with you bros!

adanny01:

You didnt put it this way. There are alot of fake inverters and batteries out there. Anyone who does not research before buying especially batteries will waste money.

Those who buy battery banks take higher risks as one bad battery will take out the rest. Replacing one failed battery is not adviseable either so they are forced to dump the whole bank.
Re: How my inverter is saving me in this poor power supply and no-fuel situation by bigtt76(f): 9:23am On Apr 25, 2016
I disagree with you.

Its best to get the Solar Panels supply your house with its primary power supply during the day time while at the same time, charge your battery bank for later use during the night time when the Sun has set.

Getting your primary power supply from the batteries will only end up reducing the efficiency of the batteries faster than it was meant to last.

Inverters are designed to 'invert' the input current from its original state to a usable state depending of course on the appliances you are powering. in our discourse here, it converts DC to AC so connecting your Solar panels to the inverter gives you AC output which you can conveniently use to run your house needs during the day and the excess charge your batteries for use later in the evening.

Very Informative. This is d sole purpose of having a solar panel. Use direct solar during d day and switch to your batteries at night if i get u right.

Soup wey sweet, na money kill am. Xantrex and outback are top of the line. My company got a quote once, with some us military grade batteries. It was a very effective system. We were running the entire facility during the demo. But the cost - no way to justify. Just no way for anything short of an oil rig

Even batteries for cars are not meant to last more than 2 years on 100% efficiency. Efficiency drops as the years go by. The deep cycle batteries are no different dear. If you are opportuned to get very good ones ...you will enjoy it!

AroOkigbo:

Consider the cost of battery and the whole inverter system. ..on average you ain't going to save anything.
Nobody will tell you the truth about the battery which you must change yearly. ..that is if you are lucky and it's not every six months.
Moreover, charging the inverter via NEPA mains isn't for free.

I think the biggest issue with these alternative source of energy, is the "STORAGE" PART -Batteries!

They are so heavy and so expensive... and you may not get good ones (even car batteries are fake in this country of ours) in the Nigerian market.
What you get are disposed batteries from some BIG UPS which has lost more than 50% of their "retaining capacity" after being used for many years by some banks! undecided

At the end of the day, you spend much energy charging it to full capacity only for such charge to deplete within a very short time.

So, until we can solve the issue of batteries (local manufacture) , we are going no-where with alternative energy

But wait for about 6 months to max of one year.
After replacing the batteries. ..give us your cost implications.
The only truth inverter users and dealers will hide from you is that about the battery life. It's makes a whole b.ullsh.it on this inverter stuff.

My brother has been using his for more than a yeah and it's working well. The guy who did it for him told him 2yrs and I feel it's going to Make it
Re: How my inverter is saving me in this poor power supply and no-fuel situation by timifakay(m): 11:16am On Apr 25, 2016
Here's an analogy: You cannot buy a Nissan Micra, and expect the output of a Toyota Tundra. Perhaps it gives the output of a Tundra for sometime it would never last as long as a Tundra.
Using a 200ah battery where you are meant to have 400ah, would definitely short live the battery.
The depth of discharge is not suppose to exceed 50% else you are calling for trouble, so when your daily need is 200ah, install a minimum of 400ah.
Please note: Amount of devices to be powered determine size of the inverter (total watts).
Duration of time to power these devices (total wh), i.e. total consumption of power determines size of battery bank and solar panel rating.
The solar panels have to be connected to the batteries at all times.
The solar panels have different outputs, so if you have 4 pieces of 80watts solar panel, that gives a total of 320watts, just a little above 1 piece of a 300watts solar panel. Don't just accept a large number of panels, find out their ratings/ capacity. People use multiple pieces of the low output panels to make the array appear big.
Compressors, motors and other rotary equipments need as much as 3 times or more of their usually running current to start, therefore your inverter rating should be in excess of the starting current of such devices to be powered.
