jeytee: I don't know why you are pessimistic. At least I can share my bitter experience with inverters because I have used over 5. I even currently have a 5kva inverter laying idle. I have a solar panel and I am guaranteed of light once the sun is up. My only issue is with my batteries which have caused me pains like previous inverters used. I don't want to change them yet because I am tired. If I don't put on some much load on my inverter and with my weak 4 batteries I am guaranteed of 24 hours power supply plus solar power. If you don't load your inverter and you have good batteries, I believe it can last you better. Recall, he has a 1.5kva and uses four 200amp batteries. I believe it should last him for 3 days if the batteries are fully charged and working well. Except he overloads the inverter. 3 Likes |

The panels output in DC. So that is used to charge up the batteries first and then you get an AC output from the inverter. I believe there are some inverter designs that allow you to get an AC output from the inverter which is supplied by the panels. However, this will most likely leave you with only a "trickle" charge rate on the batteries. That will be slower, and you may not get the full benefits from the system. bigtt76: |

I disagree with you. Its best to get the Solar Panels supply your house with its primary power supply during the day time while at the same time, charge your battery bank for later use during the night time when the Sun has set. Getting your primary power supply from the batteries will only end up reducing the efficiency of the batteries faster than it was meant to last. Inverters are designed to 'invert' the input current from its original state to a usable state depending of course on the appliances you are powering. in our discourse here, it converts DC to AC so connecting your Solar panels to the inverter gives you AC output which you can conveniently use to run your house needs during the day and the excess charge your batteries for use later in the evening. litaninja: 1 Like 1 Share |

Even batteries for cars are not meant to last more than 2 years on 100% efficiency. Efficiency drops as the years go by. The deep cycle batteries are no different dear. If you are opportuned to get very good ones ...you will enjoy it! AroOkigbo: 1 Like |

I think the biggest issue with these alternative source of energy, is the "STORAGE" PART -Batteries! They are so heavy and so expensive... and you may not get good ones (even car batteries are fake in this country of ours) in the Nigerian market. What you get are disposed batteries from some BIG UPS which has lost more than 50% of their "retaining capacity" after being used for many years by some banks! At the end of the day, you spend much energy charging it to full capacity only for such charge to deplete within a very short time. So, until we can solve the issue of batteries (local manufacture) , we are going no-where with alternative energy |

Here's an analogy: You cannot buy a Nissan Micra, and expect the output of a Toyota Tundra. Perhaps it gives the output of a Tundra for sometime it would never last as long as a Tundra. Using a 200ah battery where you are meant to have 400ah, would definitely short live the battery. The depth of discharge is not suppose to exceed 50% else you are calling for trouble, so when your daily need is 200ah, install a minimum of 400ah. Please note: Amount of devices to be powered determine size of the inverter (total watts). Duration of time to power these devices (total wh), i.e. total consumption of power determines size of battery bank and solar panel rating. The solar panels have to be connected to the batteries at all times. The solar panels have different outputs, so if you have 4 pieces of 80watts solar panel, that gives a total of 320watts, just a little above 1 piece of a 300watts solar panel. Don't just accept a large number of panels, find out their ratings/ capacity. People use multiple pieces of the low output panels to make the array appear big. Compressors, motors and other rotary equipments need as much as 3 times or more of their usually running current to start, therefore your inverter rating should be in excess of the starting current of such devices to be powered. 3 Likes 1 Share |
