Hello Great people,
I haven't posted here before, I only read and learn. I am a bit sad right now cos I was rejected a student visa last Friday, 22nd April 2016 at the Abuja Embassy. I messed it up myself cos I was very sick, I just had to show up cos the appointment was already fixed. However, I need every good advice that will help me make it up as I intend to schedule another appointment for 1st june. I intend to study an M.Sc programme in Electrical/Electronics Engineering at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut. I have my I-20 and every document to back me up.......Here is a detailed information on what happened that day. I admit I was kind of afraid cos 70% of applicants were denied visa that day.

My appointment was at 9am and every protocol was okay till I met the VO...Here is the chat!

Me: Good morning ma
Vo: Morning
me: How's work ma?
VO: Work is fine. Can I have your passport and your I-20
ME: (passed it to her then she glanced at the I-20 and held on to the passport)
VO: How many Universities did you apply to?
Me: 4
VO: name them
Me: Boston University, University of South Florida etc
VO: How many admits?
Me: one(1)
VO: How many rejects?
Me: None, Still awaiting their decision but even if it comes, I'll still settle for this
VO: Why?
Me: Cos my favourite lecturer in the faculty studied there
VO: Okay. But those other schools you mentioned are actually better schools than this one.
Me: I believe that with the high standard of education in the US every approved university is good.
VO: What do you want to become?
Me: An electrical Engineer (smiled)
VO: Why?
Me: Because that's where my passion lies
VO: Why this passion?
Me: (shocked and dumbfounded cos I never anticipate she'll still push further)
I just have passion for electronics and design of sensors...(MY confidence level really dropped here)
VO: Where do you intend to work on your return?
Me: (wasted some time)....Any electrical company
VO: Are you currently working?
Me; yes
VO: what do you do?
Me: (fidgeting) Procurement officer, sorry,.Business Development officer in a procurement company
Vo: How much do you earn in a month?
Me: 60,000 Naira
VO: Who's paying for your trip?
Me: My maternal Uncle.
VO: Sorry, I cant issue you an f1 visa at this time,...gave me a yello paper.
Me: Went back disappointed.

Truly, Everything is fine with my application, I have all the document eventhough they didn't ask for it,..I dressed well with a clean shirt and trousers...I know I didn't give the right answers to the questions, my confidence level was low....But from the conversation,.is there anything else I could do to clean the wrong impression? Please friends, Kindly help!

Thanks in anticipation.

yes, you can. Sevis fee is valid for 1year

Still on this my chairman slimmy and other gurus in the house . If you gotten your visa and paid the sevis around last year in July but didn't travel because you defer. And now will be resuming this fall, will there be issues at the poe for sevis payment. Because the resumption is in August and it would be over a year since the sevis was paid. Please educate me

Thanks once again, this is just the "do or forget about it year" for me, whats your take on Canada?

I'm in Canada, been here since 2009, finished my masters in 2011. I beg go yankee. USA is a better market for job. USA respects degree while Canada respects only experience thereby forcing a lot of masters grad without experience to go into menial jobs to survive.

Forget about what u hear about Canada among Nigerians. Well, it's up to you, let your spirit man guide you. God bless you, Brother.

Was checking the Arizona State University website and I have to ask. Is it strange that a school doesn't require Letter of recommendation or am I reading this wrong?

"Letters of recommendation are not required or permitted for master’s degree applications."

I think your answers were below par, showed disinterest and a total lack of imagination. You were asked why you picked a school for your MASTERS degree and the best you could come up with was 'your favorite lecturer attended the school' which is not a bad thing in itself if backed up by other cogent reasons like the quality of research, a specialization or niche that excites you no specific instance of current research undertaken by members of the faculty.

The situation isn't irredeemable go back to the drawing board, look up the faculty and exciting new research they are doing, and I hope you have TOEFL and GRE? Success in your next interview.

Base on my own observation you need to prove for Vo reason while you dont wait for other school decision ,strong reason why you choice the particular school and secondly you salary of 60,000 is very small , he as been to be range of 150 to 250 cos at your age you have to prove Vo that you take care of self and study a little bit , what is your age range and are you married or single ?

Hahaha what an interesting interview. At a time, the VO wanted to issue you the visa, yet you still went on with your blunders.

Firstly, go to the mirror, look at yourself, give yourself a knock and say I will never mess up again and come back here to learn. Lol.

You will give the visa in your next attempt!

Cheer up man!

Try to have an idea about the GA position and what it entails as they would ask you. They might ask for your strength and weaknesses. If you can work alone without supervision and what experiences do you have as regards the position. In all it would be a general interview question.

asssiantship will also boost your chance. If their decision can come before the end of May that would be fine, then you can wait. But I will advice you book your interview for early or mid-June, assistantship or none.

True.
Canada's permanent residency has less benefits compared to the US green card which is why Nigerians rush there because they feel it's easier to get residency..but there's life after PR.

There's also a big phenomenon of PhD cab drivers. This is a huge issue in Canada because lots of grads can't seem to get jobs even with permanent residency which is almost unheard of in the US.

Coupled with the extremely harsh weather, very high tax, lower income compared to the US, Cd$ is not doing so well.......

Yankee harsh but if you can weather the storm, the sky is your limit.

A close friend of mine who travelled after law school to Canada complained of the harsh conditions in terms of job search and security. She was laid off last December and still hasn't gotten a job till now. She is considering relocating here since she has family.

I'm not surprised, After wetin winter do me from Sept to March, I just can't understand how people enjoy life in Canada.
A guy from my school went to Canada after graduating, got PR, now he's regretting because his classmates that graduated and went to Houston to look for jobs are doing better than him without greencard sef. Not to say Canada is bad but being ware of the situation is important.

Nairaland Canada thread still flies faster than any other thread. LOL..

You are very right. A lot of graduates in Canada finish masters and cannot seem to find jobs. One of my classmates from Nigeria did master in Geophysics (Thesis route) from The University of Manitoba, finished in 2014 and still hasn't gotten a job. One of my oga's friend (older man though) initially was working in the Canada then got offered a juicy job in the US with sweet benefits, he did shakara and resigned from the job after like 4 months or so and moved back to Canada. When the oil crunch came, he got laid off.... he searched for jobs tirelessly he could not get one, he had to resort to looking for jobs in the US now and even applied to the same company he did shakara for. I know about not less than 3 Canadians here in my city that are on H1B to work in the US. A lot of them are moving to the US to work.

It is especially hard if you now live in one of those provinces that have very few people. If you go to Ottawa, you will not believe that this is the capital of Canada unlike DC. Everything is so expensive and the place was so boring! Not to talk of the fact that it was so cold at the end of May!! shocked I believe a lot of Nigerians go to Canada because PR is relatively easier to get unlike the US, but like you said, the PR has less benefits....so what is the essence?

Well said Bro. However, PR used to be easy, it's gotten tougher now. You guys going for yankee interview are lucky. Canada no get interview sef,so it's tougher to get visa. I guess what yankee vo is looking for is good communication skill. For Canada u go put documents tire even put land documents and Ur papa birth certificate, lol.

Well, God help us all. For me, yankee still remains the best US$100=C$134
