The good news is that the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer of Federal Road Safety Corps - Boboye Oyeyemi, has announced that the Federal Government has approved the extension of the validity period of Drivers license to five years.

This decision was taken by the Joint Tax Board at its 134th meeting held recently in Kano. In a chat with Transport Editors in Lagos, the Corps Marshal said rather than Drivers’ license expiring in three years, drivers now had the option of settling for either three or five years license.

This however comes with different price tags. Drivers who want the three years' license are to pay N6,000 while those who opted for the five years' license would pay N10,000.00

As usual, policy-decisions in Nigeria, is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!
Its a shame that these Govt officials think Nigerians that are already groaning under their inept leadership, are better used as a CASH-COW!
Bunch of looting thieves....... or how does just stamping "expiration = 5years", cost an additional #4,000 to the 6K already paid to acquire the 3yr license?

what's the difference?
still same 2000 per year, that's even if they won't frustrate you to opt for the one that gives them more cash claiming that the other variety is not available like the passport wahala.

That's where the corruption is hidden in every sector in Nigeria.
It's also an insult for animals like Lai Muhammed to think we don't know these things.

2k per year... That's too much I swear....

Government should learn to subsidized things for the citizen.
Upon a vehicle you pay 3k for road worthiness (I don't know the purpose of this one.
Pay 2500 for vehicle license (atleast should last 2 years).
Pay 5k for insurance that does not even exist.

Police go stop you tell you inner light, na 1k be that

Vio go still tell you ur papers na fake (if you fall Maga, 15k be ur money)

Custom fit stop you tell you ur paper no complete (O boy shine ur eye, u fit cough 200k)

On the long run, you will still pay 2k for drivers license.

It's a shame

Govt at the moment needs money. So, don't expect them to reduce it, rather they will be looking for new ways of taxing Nigerians.

Is like those saying 2k per year don't have drivers licence.
I paid 11k(official price 6350, parallel market price 10k to 15k) last week after much bargaining just to renew my licence that did not even last up 3years.
My licence was supposed to expire by December but they reduced it to February because that was my birth month. By the time you subtract the time delayed before collection you will discover that it was even less than 2yrs.
God help Nigeria.

That is the point. It takes a minimum of 18 months to process the (3- year licence) and by the time you collect it you have about 14 months left on validity; last time I renewed, I had only 8 months left. What is the logic behind having 3 and 5 years expiry dates on driver's licenses in the same country? Why do we have to undergo the same processes everytime we renew i.e payment, lecture, capture and waiting for eternity to collect? In this era of information technology all the could be done in less than a month. This 5- year thing is another fund- raising venture because you will definitely pay more than #10000 for it, definitely get less than 5 years validity and start all over again when you want to renew. It is a ruse. Very soon they will change the number plate again.

This is not fair, I expect them to add to years thereby reducing the price per year.

With the falling price of crude oil, Government needs funds to keep it promises to the people. Just bear with them. It's not easy to lead, even a small group as your family.

Whats the logic of increasing taxes when general incomes are low, where will the impoverished people get monies from, why cant the govt cut spending on non essentials like suvs, stupid trips abroad? Why dont the law makers pay taxes for the funds they enjoy.

Abeg park well, u re living in a dream world.

I feel your pain. Though I work with mvaa but still can't comprehend why driver's license expiration date must have to depend on one's month of birth. A lot of people have asked this question but we cldnt present them with any satisfactory response. I think our law makers should review this.
