Hi Guys,

I'm planning to add solar panels to my inverter backup this week(Tuesday or Wednesday), I need some advise:

I plan to use the 60A Epsolar charge controller, at the moment it looks like I will get 1200 or 1500Kw,(I will decide tomorrow), but it's 24V panels I will be getting for sure.
I need help in deciding how to string the panels optimally, will 3 strings of 48V be better than 2 strings of 72V?
is any of them better than the other? esp since it's an MPPT charge controller I will be using?

you need to state the wattage of each panel.
is ur inverter 48v or 24v?

You may need to upgrade the number if panels so that d batteries only become active from dusk till dawn. Also a small backup system tends to fail quickly because of load stress.making d backup big even though ur load is small guarantees more longevity.

THANKS FOR UR RESPONSE,AM USING "LUMINOUS INVERTER 875VA".I USE BOTH SLOAR PANELS AND NATIONAL GRID FOR CHARGING,BUT MOST OFTEN SOLAR ENERGY.I APPRECIATE UR CONCERNS.I MAY TOTALLY OPT FOR SOLAR CHARGING.THANKS AGAIN.GOD BLESS.GREEN FOR LIFE.ENJOY.

Oops, sorry for the omission. The inverter is 24V, the panels will be either 200W or 250W,
Going to buy them tomorrow or the day after.

Call us for installation at affordable rate, mk sure you size your charge controller very well, stringing ll depend on your inverter voltage. Call 08117398294 or email Info@monzpowersolutions.com

PERSONALLY, i wud go with 2 strings of 3 panels each..
on the other hand...if u hv money/thicker cables to link the panels to the CC, u may do 3 strings of 2 panels each...this is more complex, n requires thicker cables....but theoritically its said to be better for an mppt CC.

that not withstanding......i wud still prefer 2strings of 3 panels each..
hope u remebember that the epsolar 60amps maxes out at 1600w for 24v

cAn some one tell me how good & durability of this battery called TROJAN ?
Product Description
Model: L16RE-B with Bayonet
Cap
Battery: Flooded/Wet Lead-
Acid Battery
Capacity: 6V 410Ah / 20Hr
Rate
Cyclic Use: 30% DOD - 2750
cycles
Cyclic Use: 50% DOD - 1750
cycles
Dimensions (LxBxH): 295mm
x 178mm x 424mm
Terminal Height: 450mm
Weight: 54kg
Absorption charge :
2.35-2.45V, Float charge:
2.20V, Equalize charge: 2.58V
Color: Maroon (case/cover)
Material: Polypropylene

The batteries are great. They are also especially optimized for Renewable Energy usage, which means they will withstand the hassles of partial state of charge and associated effects that is characteristic of purely off grid systems. Just ensure that the system is properly sized and properly installed, and that it is a functional system, with capability to fully recharge the batteries. They will also require maintenance by topping the batteries with distilled water when the cells get short. You also cannot install them indoors because of the emissions, being unsealed flooded lead acid batteries.

Cheers.

Yes I am aware of the limitations, but I thought it was 1500W.

Asides from cable costs, I assume the thicker cable is more expensive, what would the advantage be to use 2 strings of 3 panels each?
Can you explain why 3 strings of two panels may be better for the CC? no vex say I dey ask you jamb questions.

how to decide on the way to connect the panels to the Charge controller, MPPT, 60A, inverter is 24V.

@netotse...it may be 1500w, not sure...just know its 1600 or 1500w........besides u can still hook up 1600w even if the manual says 1500w, cos u cant hv 100% efficiiency...real life efficiencies/harvest is 50 to 85% on the average.......so if u hv 1500w...u may be getting 1200w on the average...n 1500w on rare occasions n not upto 1hr sef..
an mppt charge control is more efficient at voltages closer to its its default voltage.....thus for a 24v system...the cc will be more efficient at 48v than 72v or 96v.......
thats why i said the 3 string 2 panel setup may b more efficient.......cant rememeber the exact figures but i think its 88% at 72v and 90% for 48v..........u can d.load the epsolar manual online to xcheck

yup thicker cable is more expensive...and also more difficult to work with, the thickest/most common oem/weather proof solar cable i hv seen is 10awg=8mm abi 6mm sef........n max current it can handle is 20amps x 2 or so....so if u want thicker cables...u may hv to use piping to shield the cable from the elements, if u dont see oem weatherprrof 16mm or 10mm cables...shud u decide to go the 3string route

how to decide on the way to connect the panels to the Charge controller, MPPT, 60A, inverter is 24V.

I bliv u r buying a 24v panel, since ur inverter is 24v,jst parallel dem so ur voltage remains same and ur current increases and mk sure it doesn't exceed what ur charge controller can tk.

the battery dey naah, quite expensive...125k for 1 unit...though 1500ah is 185k or so.......its major disadvantage is c/10............u need a charger that can output 150amps if u go for the 1500ah type or 80amps minimum for the one posted above..........
this battery aint for boys, nor men...........but for mega men n politrickcians, imagine buying 12 units for a 24v system or 24units for a 48v system?

Good Evening to all the Oga dem in the house (chris81964, earthrealm, Richmond, George, kekkie, etc) including determined learners like me. Thank you for all the good advice you've been providing because now, I am at a point of buying solar panels for my solar installation but i'm getting confused by the day on the kind(type) of panels to go for. some people say that considering our hot climate, poly pv cells would be my best bet because mono pv efficiency reduces by increase in temperature. while others argue that the heat down here (south) is not enough to cause damage to mono pv panel. Yet others say the type of panel doesnt matter but the manufacturer does. As a DIY kind of person, I want to get it right the first time. I have 4 Trojan J185P-AC batteries. im looking to get a 600w panel (200 x 3 or 300 x 2).

my system is inverter by Voltacon 3kva with 60A MPPT cc inbuilt.

waiting to read your responses...Thanks in advance. smiley

I admire your courage . Basically, majority of inverter/solar installers will advice you on mono crystalline solar panels. Its a bit more expensive but it dosnt mean poly crystalline dosnt out perform mono in most solar installation sites I have been to! I have clients who are active in this forum with mono and poly panels installed in their house , after much observation & comparison , they came to conclusion that poly performed better in their area ... It solely depends on your choice , poly or mono panels are both effective & efficient , so do not create a biased mind for yourself OK.. Thanks !
