‘Why bitumen exploration is just taking off in Ondo’ The Ondo State government yesterday gave reasons for the long delay in the take off of bitumen exploration in the state. It attributed the delay to the absence of a licence, which took the state government more than five years to secure. The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Kayode Akinmade mentioned this in Akure on Friday while fielding questions from newsmen inquiring from him why the government had to wait till now to begin work on the exploration of bitumen in the state as its tenure is almost ended. Reacting, Akinmade said government started work on the exploration licence process early enough, stating however that the imbalance in the country’s system of government that gives the Federal government total right on the resources of a state, when it should be the other way round, made the exploration impossible before now. Akinmade said that the people trying to make an issue out of it are obviously jittery about the development. Mentioning that the project will shore up the revenue profile of the state, Akinmade said it will also lead to the establishment of many companies, as it is also projected to impact on the overall development of the state and generate massive employment which will be a consolidation of sort on the jobs being provided for the youth in the state through Agriculture, a sector government has concentrated upon in recent time as its own reaction to the apparent need for economy diversification. The commissioner said the state government secured the licence to exploit the commodity through Beecon Nigeria limited, a concern where the government has near complete ownership, He concluded that working in agreement with an American company, Liquefied Resources, immediate exploration of bitumen is expected to begin in the Central and Southern Senatorial Districts area of the state at no cost to the government. http://thenationonlineng.net/bitumen-exploration-just-taking-off-ondo/ 2 Likes 1 Share |

Southwest government need to blow these jelosi and hater's yansh for Yorubas to see. Make these hates go kwensh. How can Nigeria grow when power from GEJ's center inhibited the success of SW states? What do they get from this? A united SW is the only thing that can stop this menace. Is this why Mimiko ported to PDP? He joined PDP a year again, makes one wonder. 13 Likes |

SamuelAnyawu: It's indeed nice, though I doubt you read it. Nigerian youths aren't asking why their state couldn't explore their natural minerals without FG's permission. They aren't asking why states only get 13% of revenues from mineral exploration. Instead of 'we hate yorubas' 'Yorubas are the problem', una should start wearing your thinking caps at this critical period. 23 Likes |

agabusta: Yes, he does need to pay salaries, but it shouldn't stop him from diversifying Ondo's economy. And doesn't Ondo need to generate money to pay salaries or does money fall from trees? 4 Likes |

iKarma: Of course money doesn't fall from above. If you have been unable to manage what came to you earlier. What is the assurance that you'll perform better with more cash? Ondo is an oil producing state collecting 13% extra cash. Ondo was aligned to the Federal in the last dispensation of GEJ and is expected to have leveraged on that in respect of favourable policies. Why then is this guy telling us stories that they couldn't get approval to explore and exploit bitumen?? It just show their incompetence and indifference. This guy if he's a good manager should not be owing 4 months salary. He was more concerned with ensuring GEJ win re-election than governing the state. I find it interesting that majority of Northern states we call 'illiterate' manage their states better than their southern counterparts. Majority of Northern states are not owing salaries. I also make bold to tell you that these guys are lying. As far back as 2002 is when the state has got licence to explore and exploit bitumen through the Company Beecon. The company is a consortium of other companies and Ondo state is part of the ownership. 12 Likes 1 Share |

agabusta: Bayelsa is an oil producing state and it owes salaries. And so do many other states. Majority of Northern states are littered with almajiris that would rather beg than work. I doubt they have as many civil servants dependent on government paychecks as Southern states. I'm even suspicious of that stat. Anyway, like I said, he should pay his salaries but the inability to pay salaries shouldn't hinder him from diversifying Ondo's economy, which will in turn generate revenue (more money to pay salaries). That's a catch 22 in reverse. 3 Likes 1 Share |

iKarma: It is the same incompetence and bad management that is being displayed in Bayelsa. They both have access to extra cash, but are still neck deep in debt. It is bad management. Both of them also got bail out funds last year from Buhari led FG. While Ondo is owing 4 months, Bayelsa is owing 5 months. It is incompetence on the part of those governors. The northern governors are smart enough, not to stretch the population of their civil service beyond their purse/capability. That is good management. According to your reasoning, the southern guys that want to clear their streets of Almajiri decided to bring them into its workforce. Now, they are finding it difficult to pay them. And most of these guys are not even very productive to the states! Mimiko has no success stories at all for his 2nd term. That is why he is just looking around for something to hold on to. He has I think 8 more months to complete his administration. He is the only governor to have won 2nd term in Ondo state and the state is seriously regretting giving him that chance. I will be very surprised if PDP wins that state in the coming election. We have been hearing "bitumen is about to be exploited since 2002". They should spare us the narrative till when we see actual mining of the product. 9 Likes 1 Share |

agabusta: I am not arguing with you about Ondo's mismanagement, so save the unnecessary long epistle for another thread. Like Bayelsa like all 36 state. My grouse with you is your thought process. Ondo shouldn't stop working or stop diversifying its economy because of current salary issue. If Ondo does, una cry. If Ono, doesn't, una still cry. Are you from Ondo? Do you currently live in Ondo? Had you taken time to read and digest the article, you'd have read where they stated that FG had to give Ondo permission to start exploiting Bitumen. Because of fear of how Ondo would grow, being that it's the largest host of bitumen resources in the world, they've been delaying the process. Clueless shoeless GEJ delayed the permission process further. Ondo couldn't have started mining without permission. 1 Like |

It is in this Ondo state that the government said it is not aware that about 7 local gov't out of the 18 do not have electricity in the last one and a half years. How are we to believe this late exploration is in the interest of the people and not the pocket? 2 Likes |

tempest02: It's a shame that it took 5 years just to get permission for bitumen exploration. Something that would have helped diversify Nigeria's economy. |

goingape: Nigeria’s bitumen is naturally occurring in a sticky tar-like form. The bitumen deposit, put at an estimated 42.74 billion metric tons, is the second largest in the world and was first discovered in 1900. ConocoPhilips Company, an American multinational corporation, carried out a technical and economic evaluation of Nigeria’s bitumen which revealed that there were over 13 billion barrels of oil in the bitumen tar sands and seepages in Nigeria. http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/content/bitumen-fortune-nigeria-losing 4 Likes |

This governor still remains the best Ondo state ever had. Roads, Infrastructures, Health Care. E.t.c The people talking bad are people who want to embezzle cash. I have seen and witness this in the state. People won't listen to constructive critism, all they need is change this change that. I think we all know what is happening to APC led government . People wey get ear make he hear. |
